Picks can be for a bassist too

As a beginner I am finding it ok as a bassist, I take professional lessons and also use online resources.

The thing that really bothers me as a bassist is the answer, bassist are not allowed to use picks.
WHY?

arggh....what is the meaning of this?

Sorry to take so long to reply (internet probs) but both Tim and I are regular pick-users and I don't go in for this idea that it's not "proper" playing.

A plectrum results in the note having more attack which, at gigs and with the type of songs we play, that comes in handy. There are some songs that it doesn't suit so I'll switch to finger or thumbpad for those.

I gather there are some who won't accept Metallica's replacement bassist because he uses a plectrum. Well, that's just ridiculous.

Really sorry for the delay man, busy busy atm, but as 1BL said; I swear by my picks!
I use Nylon, 'Tortex', Brass and Rubber ones in fact depending on the style I'm playing and the sound I want.

I can give you a more detailed break-down of them but key tip would be experiment, finding one you like will be the best 50p you ever spent. :D

Just to drive this home:

This is my favourite Metallica song, it's a Cliff bassline (from Justice...), I was at this very concert, Trujillo f'kin nailed it pick or pick, who gives?!

Sorry to be all nit-picky and stuff, but Justice album is Newsted not Cliff (RIP, all hail the god of bass!). In fact, just rechecked on the CD inlay lyric sheety thing, and allegedly Blackened is the only song on the album that Newsted had any part in writing!

Trujillo is a demon bassist though, and I personally thought Newsted was really good, it's just a shame he was treated like crap by Hetfield and Ulrich all those years.

Oh yeah  my bad!
