This special semi-hollow body bass is designed by Casady and Epiphone, only 500 will be made, showcasing a new great looking finish.

When Jack and Epiphone set out to build this guitar, they were looking for a balanced electric tone with an upright acoustic bass response, and that is what this bass guitar is all about.

Casady is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is known for his work with Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. As a testament to his influence and talent, Bass Player magazine honored him with a Lifetime Achievement award. Simply put, this guy knows his Bass guitar.

He was quoted saying: “When I first started playing, I ran across a short scale semi-hollow bass. I really enjoyed the semi-hollow nature of that bass and over the years tried to capture that characteristic.” This is what led him to design a bass that combined the tone of an acoustic with the power and flexibility of an electric. The end product seems to have achieved this, as attested by players like Guy Berryman of Coldplay, Brian Ray of Paul McCartney’s band, Blake Morgan of The Mavericks, G5 of Anvil and Chris Donohue of Emmylou Harris’ Red Dirt Boys.

The Epiphone Ltd Ed Jack Casady Signature Bass showcases the same semi-hollow design, with maple top, back and sides. The top is wrapped in a single ply cream binding and features a Silverburst color finish. A black pickguard with a traditional Epiphone “E” rounds up its classic look.

This bass has a hand-set 34″ scale mahogany neck that has a ’60s era rounded profile. It is topped with a rosewood fingerboard with a 12″ radius. The clipped dovewing headstock features Casady’s signature in gold typeface along with the Epiphone logo. A 2-ply truss rod cover features the familiar “E” logo.

The pickup used on this bass is Jack’s first priority. He said: “I went to work on the pickup and it took almost two years to develop. I did a lot of homework and bench testing and finally when it clicked in right, it was great. The workmanship that’s coming in on these instruments is just super.”

JCB-1 Pickup with VariGain

This bass features a special black covered JCB-1 low impedance and low output pickup. This pickup is controlled by a unique three-position VariGain switch to let you shape the sound and output levels.

Setting the VariGain to 50 takes you closest to acoustic sounds while the 500 setting gives you a serious fat electric tone. The 250 setting sits comfortably in between. This switch together with the black volume and tone knobs give you a wide variety of useful bass tones.

Since Jack insists that his personal bass should be no different than the production line bass guitars, he made sure that it is sturdy and road worthy. The limited edition bass comes with nickel hardware, die-cast clover bass tuners, and an adjustable bridge.

These 500 special bass guitars are to be available at a few selected retailers. Some online shops have started offering this bass with a price of $699.
