The signature guitar was supposed to be an accurate replica of Clayton's beat-up workhorse instrument, however he preferred the brand new look. Fender then gave in and built the bass to meet the Adam's specifications.
Since his bandmates, Bono and The Edge, are now part of Fender's board of directors, it is really not much of a surprise to see Clayton's signature on a Fender bass. With his band's popularity and following, it is not far fetched to expect more U2 related releases from the company.
Fender rightfully puts it when they say, "Throughout the entire phenomenal history of the band, the groundbreaking music of U2 has been underpinned by the gracefully muscular bass work of Adam Clayton. His impeccable groove and expansive tone form the sonic foundation of one of the biggest bands in the history of rock music, never more powerfully than today."
The new Adam Clayton Jazz Bass brings with it the artist's expertise and experience, providing the same playability and tone that Adam himself has used on the new U2 album.
Adam Clayton shares the story behind the bass in this video:
The familiar double cutaway body is carved from alder, and finished in Sherwood Green Metallic gloss urethane. It is paired with a 34" scale maple neck that is topped by a rosewood fingerboard.
The neck has a custom C profile, built to what the artist deems as the most playable. It is topped by a 20 fret rosewood fretboard and features a 1.5" wide synthetic bone nut. Pearloid block inlays serve as fret guides. The front side of the headstock sports a matching Sherwood Green Metallic finish.

To give the bass the sound that Clayton will approve of, Fender equipped it with two Custom Shop '60s Single-Coil Jazz Bass pickups. These pickups are overwound for hotter output and is described as having enhanced articulation. The pickups are routed to three vintage-style black plastic Jazz Bass control knobs that lets you adjust the volume for each pickup, and the master tone setting.
Other features include four-ply white pearloid pickguard, vintage-style high-mass bridge (combination string-through-body/top-load), vintage Style “lollipop” tuners and a deluxe black hard-shell case with orange interior.
The MSRP for the Fender Adam Clayton Jazz Bass is $1,800.
