When it comes to electric guitar, the RG Series is still Ibanez’ bread and butter, and its sharp double cutaway is the first guitar design that normally comes to mind when you hear the brand Ibanez. As such, Ibanez continues to expand this guitar line with new models, and this year they have come up with ones that are designed for metal heads.

The RG Iron Label line is described by the company as “made-for-metal“, so this new guitar models for 2016 follow after the same design principles, while incorporating new features, some of which were requested by fans and players alike.

There are five new models to choose from, all of them start with the label “RGIR3“, indicating that they are part of the RG Iron Label series. The new guitars include two 6-string electric guitars, two 7-string electric guitars, and an 8-string model for those that want to go even lower. The 6- and 7-string models are available with either hard tail Gibraltar II bridge, or with Ibanez’ double locking tremolo Edge Zero II bridge. The 8-string model is only available in Gibraltar II hard-tail bridge configuration. It goes without saying that the bridge are modified to match the 7-string and 8-string models accordingly.

Common features of the five new Iron Label guitars include mahogany body with multi-binding, 3pc Maple/Bubinga Nitro Wizard necks, bound rosewood fingerboard with jumbo frets, and Gotoh locking tuners. Neck specifications vary depending on the number of strings the guitar has, but the wood component remains the same.

For the pickups, Ibanez teamed up with EMG to equip these guitars with high-gain ready dual humbuckers. The 6-string versions have the EMG 60 & 81 pickups, a favorite among metal and modern rock players. The 7-string models come equipped with EMG 707 humbuckers, especially designed to handle the expanded frequency range of the extra string. Finally, the 8-string model has EMG 808 humbucking pickups that can handle the much lower frequencies needed by this guitar. Ibanez equipped each of the five new RG Iron Label guitars with kill switch ability.

Ibanez USA Electric Guitar Merchandiser Masahiko Murata concludes, “This latest round of Iron Label RG models reflect many of the requests we’ve heard from artists and fans. But from a performance standpoint, the biggest news is the addition of Gotoh locking tuners to all new Iron Label instruments. As many Ibanez fans know, Gotoh tuners are generally limited to our most expensive guitars. We’re very proud to be able to offer them on these mid-priced Iron Label models.”
