Professor Nicolas Gueguen from Université de Bretagne-Sud in France has conducted a study finding that women are more attracted to men who play guitar.
What he did was employ a 20 year old man to go up to 18 to 22 year old women in a shopping center in France, tell them that they were pretty, and ask for their phone number.
He approached 300 women divided into three groups:
- 100 women approached carrying nothing in his hands
- 100 women who he approached carry a sports bag
- 100 women approached carrying a guitar case
And here are the number of women from each group who gave him their phone numbers in order to arrange a date:
- 14
- 9
- 31
This means that a guitarist is 3 times sexier than a sporty type, and twice as attractive as your average guy.
There is only one minor problem with this research – it doesn’t appear to have actually happened. As far as I can tell, this widely reported piece of research first appeared in the Daily Mail in the UK last week, and has since been reported by many other websites and news papers who all reference the Daily Mail article.
However, I’ve searched the literature, the science websites that usually report these kinds of papers, and the University where Professor Gueguen is employed, and I can’t find any evidence that such a paper exists.
The university and the professor are real, and he really does do a lot of research on topics relating to attractiveness, but this doesn’t seem to have been one of them.
But don’t despair – GuitarSite.com is here to tell you that Male, Female, or anything in between, guitarists are definitely sexier than the average person, and if anyone disagrees just tell them I said so.
