These new strings feature thicker core wires that retain tonal definition even when tuned below the E-standard tuning.

Tuning down has become the norm in many styles of modern rock music, and this includes bass guitars. Although using regular strings can work, some of the feel and tone is compromised because of the lower tension. And so manufacturers have been coming up with designs that will work for tuned down bass guitars.

Dunlop now offers a solution to this problem, by designing bass strings with thicker inner core wires. They utilized a unique core wire and proprietary wrap ratios that suit the down-tune requirements of bass guitars. According to Dunlop it can also handle hard pick or finger attacks while still retaining good frequency balance when playing clean or distorted.

Like their other string products, Dunlop applied three levels of moisture protection to improved the life span of the strings. They come sealed in a VCI Fresh Technology (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) bag that guarantees that your strings arrive as fresh as the day they were made.

The Heavy Core Bass String sets are optimized for a specific range of tunings: Heavy for Drop-D and D-Standard; Heavier for Drop-C and C-Standard; and Heaviest for Drop-B and B-Standard. The string gauges for the heavy set are 45-65-85-105

String Gauges:

  • Heavy: 45-65-85-105
  • Heavier: 55-75-95-115
  • Heaviest: 55-75-100-120

The manufacturer suggested retail price for Dunlop Heavy Core bass Strings is $44.95. For more information and to check on their bass guitar strings, you can head over to Jim Dunlop.
