It took Epic Ink years of discussion, deliberation and debate to ensure that the 512 pages of The Guitar Collection feature only the best and most culturally significant guitars. The book is in itself a tribute to the guitars that are featured.

This book took many years in the making and is filled with high definition, state of the art original photography. It was created to be a photographic odyssey and music documentary in one package, detailing 150 of the most significant guitars there is.

There are over 670 original high definition photography on the book. The full color images show extreme details, like the scratch marks from Maybelle Carter’s Gibson L-5, or the wear on the left-handed Competition Mustang that Kurt Cobain used on the Smells Like Teen Spirit video. Other Iconic guitars that were featured were Buddy Holly’s Gibson J-45 and Eric Clapton’s “Blackie”, the book also featured guitars used by Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Emmylou Harris, Jeff Beck and many more. The book also featured guitars that were pivotal to the development of guitar making technology like Stradivarious’ 1700 era guitars and the Martin D-458 which is considered as the holy grail of acoustic guitars.

Even Slash was impressed and was quoted: “The Guitar Collection is, without a doubt, the most beautiful and visually engrossing guitar exposé I’ve ever seen,”. Slash’ Les Paul Standard Copy was one of the guitars detailed in the book.

The Guitar Collection: An Elite Gathering of 150 Exceptional Guitars is a book by Walter Carter with photographs by John Peden, Marco Prozzo and Greg Morgan. It is published by Epic Ink. A supplemental book called The Guitar Collection: Stories is also available which provides a wealth of behind the scenes information and anecdotes on each of the featured guitars.

Walter Carter is the former historian for Gibson Guitar Corporation and have authored 10 books on guitars, which include Gibson Guitars: 100 Years of an American Icon and Gruhn’s Guide to Vintage Guitars.

There are three editions of the book, the only difference is that each edition features its own signed museum quality print from photographer John Peden. There will only be 1500 hand numbered copies per edition and the lower numbered copies are more expensive. Here is the current Pricing structure for the book:

  • Level Two: Hand-numbered copies #11- 100 @ $2,000
  • Level Three: Hand-numbered copies #101-1,500 @ $1,500
