While most marketers continue to juice the analog hype, Boss went the opposite route saying that this pedal “provides a superior playing experience that’s unattainable with analog distortion pedals”.

Being based on the popular DS-1, this new stompbox features the same familiar shape and orange color, albeit with a different set of controls and re-invented innards. This pedal sheds off the remnants of its analog past and puts on the latest in digital sound processing.

If you are looking for an analog sounding distortion box, this may not be for you because according to the manufacturer this pedal provides a “completely new tonal experience”. If you are curious as to what the Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP) technology is all about, here is the description straight from Boss:

“Powered by BOSS’ MDP technology, this amazing pedal delivers distortion that sounds perfect no matter where you play on the neck, even at the highest gain settings. You’ll enjoy tight response on the low strings and fat, singing tones on the highest notes, plus exceptional definition when playing two or more notes at a time. At every setting, the sound is never muddy or boomy, while the smooth, natural presence ensures that you always cut through without harshness or nasal overtones. With the DS-1X, your distortion tone feels and sounds “dialed in” the instant you turn it on, providing a rich, satisfying playing experience that’s both effortless and inspiring.”

Basically, this technology applies the distortion voicing equally however high or low you play, and I’m not talking about the strap height. This can be both good in a recording situation when you want everything balanced and smooth, the trade-off is that it may flatten out subtle dynamics, which may be a deal breaker for more traditional players. To be fair, digital distortion has come a long way so any effect on dynamics can be overridden by simply adjusting your playing technique.
