This new pedal expands on the already capable Phase 90 without modifying its venerable sound, and it does so by doubling the circuit and fitting it into the same standard sized housing.

I can imagine that the inside of this new stompbox would be cramped, because MXR successfully put two Phase 90 circuits inside the same sized unit. It essentially is two phaser pedals in one, complete with routing capabilities that make it work like two separate physical stompboxes.

So the question really is, does anyone need two phasers running in one board – and the not so surprising answer is someone does! We guitarists follow the simple philosophy of “the more the merrier” after all.

Thanks to its routing capabilities, you can use the pedal to run the two phasers independently with separate outputs, or you can have them chained in series going out into one output. This flexibility is controlled via the p/s button, allowing for basic phaser use or for experimental dual phasing.

A vintage button is provided for switching between modern and vintage voices, giving the pedal a bit more tonal flavor to offer compared to the original. The third button gives you the ability to sync the rate of each phaser for achieving what MXR describes as “epic atmospheric tones”.

Finally, the housing of the Phase 99 features the same bright orange color and sturdy metal chassis. It looks very much like the classic pedal, except for the extra speed knob and additional buttons. Judging from the many vintage Phase 90s that are still functional, this one will serve its owner for quite a while.

The limited edition Phase 99 pedal has a suggested retail price of around $272, and is now available through select MXR Custom Shop dealers.
