Jonny Lang

Jonny Lang

Another amazing musician with talent beyond his years, Jonny Lang plays and sings with the understanding and emotion of an old blues master, though he is only 16 years old. How did he develop that throaty, growling voice; that burning lead guitar style? Touring and recording Lie To Me with the older, more seasoned musicians in his band played a big part.
&#147It’s a really great experience,” he says, &#147I have the opportunity to tap into what they have, and learn–I mean every minute I’m with them–learn something, whether it’s about music or about their experiences or just about playing. It’s great.”
Jonny has learned his lessons well, and now he wants to do a little teaching too. He says he’d be happy to turn more of his generation on to the blues. That’s not going to be difficult, he figures. The way Jonny sees it, Generation Next is already listening.
&#147Definitely. Everybody says, ‘You know, you’re sitting in your room listening to blues records while everybody else your age is listening to alternative records’ and that’s not really true, because there’s a lot of people my age who are into it.
&#147That’s another part of my goal,” he continues. &#147Just to really try to turn some heads and get people listening to the stuff that I started out listening to. There will never be another Albert King, or another Albert Collins or B.B. King. They’re just the greats, and I think that’s definitely who you should be listening to. [Editor’s note: Robin Trower once said, &#147Listen to the originators, not the imitators.”] If younger people can start getting into it and keep it alive, that’s just great.”

  4. I’m 15 years old, and I just recently got a guitar about 6 months ago. I think the blues rule. I don’t care if other people around me listen to rap or whatever, the blues still rule, and I think it’s pretty cool Jonny Lang is only like 19 now and he’s already bad as hell at guitar and has played with some blues greats. I don’t play all that well yet, but the stuff I really wanna play is blues or blues influenced rock like Zeppelin for example. Anyway, just wanted to let you know, I’m keeping the blues alive, and I know a good many people who love the blues as much as me and have fun playin it on their guitars too.
