10 string 70's Mel-O-Bar
Posted by Rich Rice on Tue, 03/13/2012 - 12:58.
I got a somewhat hacked up 10 string that I'm restoring. It has the Naugahyde body ("The Tone is in the Foam"). It has the six string setup on the treble side with a four string setup on the bass side. I'm not sure of the original intent. At this point, I'm tempted to make an evenly spaced bridge/nut and do a 10 string C6 tuning across the neck, but am intrigued by the original setup. It came with a "Memory Bar" to separate the two sets of strings, but without knowing the purpose and tuning it doesn't make sense to me.

I went to smiths house because my parents live near them and i have a melobar, i actually have one of the original melobars that were not even mass distibuteded, I guess this guy who inherited the guitar buisness sold it to someone else, he shamed his family, he shood realy be shot. He wouldn't tell me anything about the guitar, he such a **** in pussy.
I'll tell you why the family had problems, my friend---and it's not because the Smith family "sucks" as you so callously put it. It's because both sons were nursing their poor mother who was in agony on her death bed with a crippling cancer for two years. So before you start making judgements about folks, you may want to consider that other people have issues in their lives you may not know about.
I've seen two old Melobars, and bought them both. The first one was a 9-string on a Mosrite body w/ playing card markers(hearts, clubs, diamonds, and spades) on the fretboard. It has two pick-ups and can really scream when turned up. My second was a 10-string model with tuning instructions on the fretboard, it also has a great sound. I'm not sure who made the body on the second model. Anyway, I think the design was a great idea, having stand-up, strap-on slide guitar w/ a slanted neck allows you to really rock & roll.

Any guidance/info would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Is the Melobar still available?
If yes, what is your asking price?
If no, how much did it sell for?
Sincerely, Rob Lippman
