I am really desperate for a cheap 5 string bass mainly with a wooden effect on the body. My limit is £300. Needs to be in good condition and has to be 5 string!

I have the previously owned Epiphone - Gibson custom guitar you are looking for. This is an Epiphone Gibson, White custom six string number u6110798 with a matching case and amplifier. Amp is Crate, GX-15 all these are in great condition. You can see the guitar at www.byowners.net/guitar by 6:PM EST Saturday October 13,2001. I have been offered $450 by a dealer who will resale for approximately $750 US Dollars or More. Price includes a $200.00 Carrying Case.

I bought mine new in 1980. The general consensus is that it was made between 1979 and 1980 in Taiwan. Some say in Japan; but I don't know of any proof to that. It appears that they were made in the Custom and standard models in at least three colors: black, natural, and I think red. It would appear that the custom model can be distinguished from the standard in that the customs have gold tuning keys. My Genesis is black with chrome keys. I could never get for it what it is worth; and you can't find another guitar like it. I've seen them posted for $450.00; but you couldn't buy an equivalent guitar for that. So, I had the pots replaced, and it's been a steady performer for me for 23 years with no neck warpage or other problems. I see you posted this message over a year ago; so I don't even know if you still have it.
I've taken parts off both of mine (a black Standard and a sunburst Custom) and any of the labeled parts (pickups, bridge, tailpiece) have "Japan" printed or stamped on them. It's unlikely that Taiwan (a Republic of China) and Japan were importing/exporting non-essential goods during that period. All of that is to say that they were probably made in Japan, MAYBE exported to Taiwan. Maybe.

I just bought one, and I've played alot of guitars. This guitar grabbed me from across the room. I plugged it in and was floored. Last time I got that much tone it was from a 70's black Les Paul Custom. I was looking for history on it also.

According to Epiphone, this guitar was produced in Taiwan between 1979 and 1981. It is essentially a Les Paul double-cutaway built of mahogany with roeswood fretboard. The pickups are DiMarzio, tuners. Two models were produced, a standard with DOT inlay and a custom with neck binding and Pearl Block inlay. They are generally well made but very heavy guitars (feeling much like a Les Paul). Only six of the actual Gibson prototypes were produced, and production of the Genesis ran only two years. Hold on to it... This is probably one of the most underrated set neck guitars out there...
Epiphone manufactured your guitar in japan between
1979 and 1981. It is mohogany with a maple top
(like a les paul) and was probably equipped with
Dimarzio super distortion humbuckers and coil tap.

i just put EMG's in mine and it sounds and feels so good but i dont get the single coil sound anymore, its unique and i think it feels better than any les paul ive ever played. ill buy yours
