Trivia: Guitarist/Band Who Am I

Lee's thread was a lot of fun, so here is another little game.

We are an English band who despite having 18 albums, only had 1 top 10 hit (UK/US). We changed our name not too long after being formed. We have been around for over 30 years.

Gosh, were PiL formed in 1978? Seems like last year. If that's not the right answer, the only Jaguar-toting band that I could think of was Television, but they formed well before 1978. Must say, I'm a bit stumped on this one (d'you know how many bassists only played a Jazz?)

Both wrong, the main guitarist nearly always played a Jaguar/Jazzmaster (sometimes a tele) .

Singer played a Thinline Tele, sometimes a semi acoustic, casino looking thing.

Bass player always played a Fender Jazz.

The Drummer played the drums.

Took off in the early-mid eighties.

Cryptic clue?? to one of their LP's (anyone remember those?) :

Utopia on the top floor.

Only 3 bands formed in 1978 and they've all been said Lee.

Only three bands formed in 1978? I'm sure I'd got "Nuclear Fusion" started at high school that year. We didn't gig because I think I was the only member owning a genuine instrument (a Satellite).

Lee's clue, "Utopia on the top floor" made me think of Heaven 17 (and the album Penthouse and Pavement, but 1978 is too early (surely?) and they weren't exactly a guitar band.

Sorry, I've been a bit busy this last week. I'm off to the States tomorrow and I've been going crackers trying to get everything ready.

Unfortunately it's work, not pleasure.

Nice thinking Bass, you got the Utopia bit, first part of the name of the LP was 'Heaven ** ****' they formed in 78' but think early to mid 80's.

The lead singer was in a band which contained 3 other major artists of that era, all based in the same city - not London.

They are still around today, but with only 3 of the original 4 line up, Original drummer died in 89, band spit in 90, in 94 the singer and guitarist reformed under another name.
The band reformed in 97 and have been together since then.
