Lee’s thread was a lot of fun, so here is another little game.
We are an English band who despite having 18 albums, only had 1 top 10 hit (UK/US). We changed our name not too long after being formed. We have been around for over 30 years.

I was just going to come in with my ‘Hits of the 70’s/80’s’ list and steal the show, the answer wasn’t in there, but thats not going to stop me. 😀

Neither was I, Mike; I just made it up (although it sounded just too plausible). Until you’d posted that it existed and had watched it, I’d have never believed it.

I wasn’t familiar with the adults only version of Golden Girls. Until now. There really is a Hell.

😳 , I ought to congrat Shake. Well done, chum. Have you got a twister for us?
-
August 1, 2007 at 9:37 am #710511bassleftParticipant
👿 , “Golden Girls” turned up on my search of all your clues, but I got sidetracked by “Moonlighting”. I thought you said a 1985 “popular” show. Golden Girls sucked Major League; even the inevitable adult-DVD ripoff was worse than Shaving Ryan’s Privates
-
August 1, 2007 at 6:17 am #71033MichaelParticipant
lol nah you got it. Lucky I didn’t say it was 1bassleft’s favourite tv show — woulda got it sooner.
-
August 1, 2007 at 2:21 am #78957shakedown_04092Participant
Andrew Gold by chance???
He wrote the theme song for Golden Girls (NOT my favorite show, btw) called “Thank You For Being a Friend” and it was sung by some girl (?). Also played a few different instruments….
I don’t think that’s it though. Damnit! This is hard!
-
August 1, 2007 at 2:09 am #78961shakedown_04092Participant
Nope, that can’t be it, because Portnoy sang the version on Cheers, and your previous clues said he didn’t sing the TV version….nor do many of the other previous clues work.
….hmmmmm…..
American Show which began in 1985. Very famous show.
Could well have been YOUR favourite show.
Aha! Was looking at the clues again and I finally got it. Should’ve gotten it sooner. The “your” favorite show gave it away. I was thinking…”why me?” and then it came to me.
The tv show is Cheers, and the author of it is Gary Portnoy, who also penned the theme songs to “Punky Brewster” and “Mr. Belvedere”
Wait, Cheers premiered in 1982…..uh oh……but that’s gotta be it. I can’t think of any others. If that’s not it I’m stumped.

Ugh….no idea Mike. Don’t know if that’s really worthy of a post, but oh well…..
What year(s) did this famous TV show(s) run that you wrote the song(s) for? And was it an American show?
-
July 30, 2007 at 11:29 am #71090MichaelParticipant
I indeed took the google root!! after 5 days of tearing my hair out, you really think I wasn’t gonna resort to wikipedia! 😆
Yes, some would say the artist in my new question is both soft rock and a soft cock.
I know you can’t possibly be bagging out Toto for real though.
-
July 30, 2007 at 9:47 am #788891bassleftParticipant
Wasn’t Dorothy’s dog called “Toto”? If the drummer in question is from that shite, LA bunch of softies, I haven’t got a hope of answering this one.

July 30, 2007 at 6:27 am #71083MichaelParticipant
Lee on a game show? The editor would have to cut out 4 hours of him piping off every band to ever record a song 🙂
Speaking of TV… this one ties in….
I’ve gotta goody:
– I’m American
– One of my songs was used for a very popular TV show (though I did not sing the TV version)
– I also sang the song for another popular TV show.
– Despite having television ‘hits’, I still had regular hits in the 70s.
– I’ve played and co-produced with a band whose name has numbers in it
– I’ve played alongside the drummer from a band with the same name as a famous dog from a yellow brick road.
– I play multiple instruments, including guitar and piano.
– (new clue) soft rocklet the games begin……..

PS – you guys have seen the old U.S. tv show “Name That Tune”, I assume? (forgive me if this program originated elsewhere….I have only seen it on U.S. tv…..) But as for our previous aformentioned band, it made me think of that show:
Lee: “Bob, I can name that band in 1……2……3……clues!” etc. etc. etc.
Michael: “Bob, I can name that band in 6 clues! (with a lil’ help from some pics)”
Good show, anyways. I miss it, even though it was before my time. I used to watch the re-runs.
Sorry, back to our regularly scheduled program….
-
July 27, 2007 at 12:33 pm #71092shakedown_04092Participant
So I can assume you guys finally see all the “can you GUESS WHO it is now?” references??? Geez, and to think, I thought you’d get it in the first clue or two! I hope I didn’t set the bar too high because I think I got lucky….I don’t think I’m as good at this game as y’all are; I was having a hard time at some of the previous bands/artists. “Guess” those clues were harder than I thought…
So what gave it away? Was it the pics? or the final Canadian #1 hit clue?
Well, it was fun anyways. Who’s next?

CLUE #6:
They were the first Canadian rock group to have a #1 hit in the U.S.
Now go ahead….search your search engines and cheat!…..hell, at this point, it may be your only hope! You guys are gonna die when you find out who it is and how I’ve spelled it out for ya. 😆

July 26, 2007 at 3:36 am #126874shakedown_04092Participant
Lee, you are painstakingly close at this point. I think the only group you’ve left out is the one that is the answer to this question. You really do need to put these clues together though, because I think you already know it if you do. I’ve basically written it into the clues for you; you’ll be kicking yourself once you see it:
[code:1]CLUE #1:
This group, originally formed in 1960, was one of the first to establish a major successful following in their own country while still residing there. You know them by their more popular name, which they eventually were forced to switch to shortly after their first hit (a cover song, btw), which made it to #1 in their country.
CLUE #2:
Their immediate follow-ups to their first hit were met with major success in their country, but with little success elsewhere. Remember when I told you you know them by their later, more popular name? Well, that popular name became permanant in 1965 when the person for whom the band was originally named for left the band shortly after their new keyboardist and lead vocalist arrived (sorry, can’t give away the year yet).
CLUE #3:
This new keyboardist and the group’s guitatrist became the bands main composers until lifestyle differences led the guitarist to leave the group during their unfinished 1970 album, and he subsequently formed another band, which eventually evolved into a supergroup (which I can’t name).
CLUE #4:
Remember, their first #1 hit was only a #1 in their country (not the UK, btw). And they only had one #1 in the U.S., which was famously covered/remade a few years back (more like 10 years back, I think).
So….those are some good clues. Can you guess who it is now?
CLUE #5:
In 1965, when their first hit (a cover) went #1 in their country, it went to #22 in the U.S., but their first U.S. top 10 didn’t hit until 4 years later. Their only #1 in the U.S. was also released with an awesome B-side track, but if I gave the name of either song you’d surely get it. You guys just HAVE to guess who it is now!!!
Ok, you talked me into it: the country is Canada.
Who’s next?[/code:1]
I’ve filled in some of the previously omitted years above, so that should help, but now I’m giving it away with this playbill:

Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Denny Doherty (of The Mamas & the Papas), David Clayton-Thomas, Neil Young, Andy Kim, Zal Yanovsky (of The Lovin’ Spoonful), John Kay (of Steppenwolf), and Ian & Sylvia ??? or Stan Rogers, Murray McLauchlan, Bruce Cockburn and Willie P. Bennett???Rush, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Bruce Cockburn, April Wine, Pat Travers and Neil Young???
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young??????????? 😈

Oh man….that would be a dead giveaway. Let’s try a more obvious clue (though you really need to look at some of the last ones….I mean, I’m spelling it out for you!):
CLUE #5:

Well done Mike, (How did a young whipper snapper like you get those cluses?) they were a big band so i had to keep the clues cryptic, non London was of course Liverpool, McClulloch was also in an early band with Julian Cope who went on to form The Teardrop Explodes (one of my other fav bands of all time) and the other bloke in the band was Pete Wylie who i think went on to Become the Mighty Wah, or was it the Wah?? anyway those 3 were in a band together.
Utopia on the top floor?? my favourite Bunny record (LP) Heaven up Here.
Pete de Freitas died, he was the drummer, McCulloch went on with Will Seargent to form ‘Electrafixion’ a great band, i think they recorded 1 CD ‘Burned’ and what a great CD, stand out tracks: Zephyr, and also sister pain.
Seargent always (nearly always) used a Jaguar/Jazzmaster, McCulloch a Thinline tele, occasionaly a semi acoustic, Pattinson a Jazz bass.
Still touring and recording to this day.Go for it Mike.

The lead singer was in a band which contained 3 other major artists of that era, all based in the same city – not London.
They are still around today, but with only 3 of the original 4 line up, Original drummer died in 89, band spit in 90, in 94 the singer and guitarist reformed under another name.
The band reformed in 97 and have been together since then. -

Both wrong, the main guitarist nearly always played a Jaguar/Jazzmaster (sometimes a tele) .
Singer played a Thinline Tele, sometimes a semi acoustic, casino looking thing.
Bass player always played a Fender Jazz.
The Drummer played the drums.
Took off in the early-mid eighties.

Fender Jazz (always)

Yep, Sensational (superlative) Alex Harvey Band (eponymous) it was. They’re still playing even though he died in 1982. I found the pic of him as a boy on a fansite and loved the fact that the characteristic stripey top featured even then.

None of the above. Keep on the ‘orgasm’ trail so to speak. Some good attempts though, even if we have only worked out every band name possibly linked to sex.

IIRC, they came up with the name after a chum said “they’d go down like a lead zeppelin” but I don’t know if they had a diff name prior to that.
Bass, it was supposedly Keith Moon who said they’d go down like a lead balloon. There were a few 7″ vinyls released in the USA but in the UK they had no singles. Didn’t one of their albums (Physical Graffitti, I think) make the US singles chart because it sold so many copies it eclipsed everything? (Or is that just legend?) Also, I believe their original moniker was “The New Yardbirds”.
Sorry Mike, back to the quiz…
