I find distortion effect a major part of my bass sound, by no means I consider myself a wanna be guitar player, just love the dynamics between tones etc. specially for bass instrumental compositions.

How much of this distorted behavior influences your bass playing?

I find it's hard to achieve a defined bass line with distortion, definitely an overdrive fan but I often find distortion too much, if you can control it it sounds kick-ass tho.
What do you use out of interest? I think equipment plays a big part in this (try Zoom 506 destortion... Shocked )
What type of music do you play? I like a bit of 'growl' for Blues and Rock stuff, problem with things like metal is the multitude of guitars, you're already down in the mix so the loss in clarity and punch isn't good IMO.
