The two signature models are based on Dylan’s personalized Gibson SJ-200, described as a highly customized acoustic guitar that depicts graphic artwork which feature his style and legacy.

According to the company, it took them years of to design to develop these new signature guitars, with the artist and his team overseeing the development process. With Dylan’s worldwide popularity, it is not surprising to find that Gibson took their sweet time in designing and building these guitars, to ensure that nothing less than artist approved features will make it to production.

As expected, the two Bob Dylan signatures will be carrying crazy price tags, even the Player’s Edition is still expensive by normal standards. The Autographed Collector’s Edition is even more expensive, around twice that of the Player’s edition, an instrument that only the privileged few will get their hands on.

Chairman and CEO of Gibson Brands Henry Juszkiewicz said “After years of design and development overseen by the artist’s personal guidance, these new models represent the best in artistry and performance, just as Bob Dylan represents the best in American songwriting. Taking elements from the historic SJ-200 line and blending them with Bob’s personal vision for a signature model, these guitars represent the best of music history.”

This guitar is a modern reproduction version of Dylan’s personal SJ-200 guitar, meant to be a premium workhorse instrument for musicians. It retains the features expected from the SJ-200 line, which the company considers as the “King of Flat-tops”, while incorporating Bob Dylan approved high-end tonewoods and elegant appointments.

It has an Adirondack spruce top and flame maple for the back and sides, all of which are wrapped in classic style multi-ply binding. As expected, the guitar comes in vintage sunburst finish and features ornate double pickguards that will make it easily stand out from among the crowd. The neck is crafted from three-piece flamed maple and topped by a rosewood fingerboard with pearl Bella Voice inlays. The bound headstock with Bob Dylan’s “eye logo” decal and pearl Gibson logo completes the guitar’s elegant appearance. Other features include an L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup for plugging in, a traditional mustache bridge and gold Gotoh tuners.

The premium Bob Dylan Autographed SJ-200 Collector’s Edition is a faithful reproduction of Bob’s personal highly-customized SJ-200. It follows the same specifications as the Player’s Edition but with more appointments and more premium tonewoods.

While the other version had flame maple for the back and sides, the body of this guitar is fashioned from highly figured Indian rosewood and AAA grade Sitka spruce. This should give the guitar a more traditional tone when compared to the Player’ Edition. It also carries the same aesthetics, albeit with a bit more exaggeration, including the headstock eye logo inlaid in mother-of-pearl and Bella Voce mother-of-pearl inlay in the fret board. The double pick guards are noticeably more ornate, decorated with an inlay of abalone. According to Gibson, “Each model features a label autographed by Bob Dylan and is numbered in the series on the head block. Only 175 guitars will be made and distributed for worldwide sales. These guitars will also include a unique limited edition hard-shell case with embroidered artist’s eye logo.”

The MSRP for the new Bob Dylan SJ-200 Player’s Edition is $4,999, while the Bob Dylan Autographed SJ-200 Collector’s Edition has an MSRP of $9,999. Head over to Gibson for the complete specifications of both guitars.
