Like its bigger siblings, this high-gain amp is meant to appease the requirements of rock and metal players, while satisfying everyone else with its clean and lower gain settings.

While other high-gain amps are known for sub-par clean tones, PRS designed the Archon series to provide great clean tones just as well as it does high gain distortion tones. The latest to come out of this line is this compact 25 Watt version that carry the same tone as the other Archon amps, albeit in a smaller package and at more home and studio friendly volume levels.

When 25 Watts is still too loud, the amp comes with a power attenuator switch that will bring down the amp’s power to 13 Watts. This makes it easier to “crank” the amp without the volume going overboard. Since tube amps sound best when pushed, the lower power setting of this amp will let you get high-gain tones at manageable volumes.

The company says, “Recording with an amp at lower volumes allows for a cleaner signal and a truer tone, and keep the soundman happy by not blowing out the other members of the band.”

Instead of the 6L6/EL34 tube configuration, the Archon 25 has two 5881 power tubes, and six 12AX7 preamp tubes. The company says that this configuration has extended high end while still maintaining the Archon’s signature crunch. The amp drives a single 12″ Celestion G12-75T speaker.

Both the Lead and Clean channels have independent tone shaping controls that include volume and 3-band EQ (bass, mid and treble) knobs. You can sculpt your tone further via the global depth and presence knobs, which serve as extra EQ controls. If those knobs are not enough, the amp also comes with two “bright switches” that lets you independently add high-frequency emphasis to the two channels. Aside from the volume control, the two channels also have independent master volume knobs.

PRS Artist Emil Werstler concludes, “It’s a pretty surprising amp. One of the main reasons I play this amp is that it has a rare feature for a high gain amp, and that is that it actually has a clean channel. It’s very lightweight, and you can drive external cabinets with it. It feels the same [as the original Archon]. The only difference is it’s obviously very small and you can’t complain about carting it upstairs anymore.”

Pricing information will soon be available. For more information on the new PRS Archon 25 combo amp, head over to PRS Guitars.
