Knaggs Severn X

Knaggs Guitars introduce the Severn X, their latest hand-built Super Strat style guitar with proprietary Hinge tremolo.

Knaggs Severn X

This new guitar is based on the original Severn model, carrying over the same body shape with some adjustments and improvements done to the hardware installed and the neck playing feel.

The company describes this new release as a modern update to the Severn model, designed to challenge other Super Strat style guitars in the market with its versatile tone, improved sustain and fast string action.

And since this guitar is built by Joe Knaggs, you can expect it to be quite a challenger, considering his experience with similarly designed guitars. Joe was once part of PRS, and not just a part, but the head of their R & D department for some years. He even became the head of PRS’ Private Stock department, which meant that he had a hand on almost every Private Stock the company built during his time, as evidenced by his signature being found on the COAs and headstocks of these guitars.

As expected, the Severn X guitar carries some PRS elements with it, but it offers important distinctions that helped carry the Knaggs brand into the hands of artists that include Todd Rundgren, Larry Mitchell, Steve Stevens, Doug Rappoport, Javi Vinas, Federico Navarro, Pablo Olivares, Tyler Tomlinson, Richard Barrett, Mick Hayes and many others.

Joe Knaggs shares the story behind the Severn X: “Due to requests from artists and customers for a more modern feel, we developed the Severn X. We will continue the classic 6- on-a-side guitar that the original Severn was based around, so we did not change the original. Instead we added the Severn X to offer an instrument with a different vibe”.

The guitar’s double cutaway body is crafted from mahogany with a curly maple top, following the familiar shape of their Severn series. What makes this new version distinct is its neck specifications, which feature set-neck joint, Indian rosewood fingerboard, 14″ radius, 1.65″ nut width and jumbo frets, all of which work together to provide a smooth modern playing feel that contrasts the vintage style overall appearance.

The guitar is available in three different pick-up configurations, which include traditional triple single coil (SSS), traditional double humbucker (HH), or modern HSS and HSH setups. Seymour Duncan TB4 and SH2N humbuckers were listed as the one being used on the HH model. The pickups are wired to a pickup selector with conventional volume and tone controls

The Severn X features Knagg’s proprietary Hinge Tremolo, which helps increase string vibration by attaching the string into the center of the body, which ultimately results in improved sustain and response.

Other features include curly maple headstock veneer to match the aesthetics of the body, Gotoh Magnum tuners, graphite nut and Dunlop straplocks. For more information and other details, you can head over to Knaggs Guitars.
