Michael Kelly CC50DLX Custom Collection 50 Deluxe

Michael Kelly introduces the Custom Collection 50 Deluxe guitar, featuring two single-coil sized humbuckers with 12 switchable voices.

Michael Kelly CC50DLX

This guitar was brought about by an extended collaboration with Seymour Duncan, combining their Hot Rails pickup design with Michael Kelly’s 12-tone mod that allows a dual pickup guitar to have more tones available to it.

This Tele style guitar is not your typical 3-voice instrument, because as mentioned above, the Custom Collection 50 Deluxe features push/pull knobs and a 4-way switch that lets you choose between a total of 12 distinct tones. This interesting combination of modern technology and vintage appeal results in a guitar that looks familiar, but can do some very interesting things.

It starts off with a maple-bound alder body that’s finished in striped ebony, giving it an old school look that contrasts the modern circuit switching within. It follows the company’s 1950’s series single cutaway shape, complete with a black pickguard and traditional two knobs and one pickup switch design.

However inside this seemingly conventional body design are mods that make this guitar do more. It houses two Seymour Duncan Hot Rail pickups that have the ability to switch between humbucking and single coil tones, while fitting into a regular single-coil slot. With these pickups, you can go from twang and surf tones to fat and heavy rock tones by pushing and pulling the volume and tone knobs. The pickups are then wired to Michael Kelly’s 12-Tone Mod circuit which opens up the tone palette further to a total of 12. This configuration is ideal for guitarists who play varying styles of music in one single performance, removing the need to switch between guitars for tone changes.

The company explains: ” One key to the 12-Tone Mod on the Deluxe is the use of a 4-way switch instead of the typical 3-way switch. The 4-way blade switch delivers the typical neck, bridge or both settings of a 3-way, while adding a fourth position as a “series” option. Two push-pull pots on the master volume and master tone knob help expand the tonal variations. One splits the neck pickup from humbucker to single coil when pulled up; the other splits the bridge pickup. The pickups can be positioned 12 different ways for unique sonic settings”.

As for the playing feel, the guitar has a bolt-on maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard. It follows a modern C neck profile and has 22 medium jumbo frets, with a scale length of 25.5″, 10.” fingerboard radius, and 43mm nut width.

Other features of this guitar include vintage style bridge with brass saddles, die-cast tuning keys and chrome finish on the metal hardware. The MSRP for the Michael Kelly CC50DLX is $1,100.00, but it will have a low introductory price of $699.99. And for what it can do, the price point is definitely tempting.
