The brand says that this pedal produces fuzz with overtones similar to those produced by an electronic-bow or e-bow.

The name of the pedal alludes to its ability to twist or bend your guitar signal out of its regular shape, all the while applying high-gain effect to your sound.

It has a special frequency multiplier circuit that creates harmonics that swell and recede depending on your gain setting and playing dynamics. This will let you dramatically control the effect by how hard you attack the strings and the position where you pluck.

Once assembled, the pedal has two knobs for controlling basic parameters that include gain and output level. Note that MOD Kits DIY designed the pedal with a high gain circuit that can put out up to 2 volts. This means that turning up the gain will give you crazy amounts of distortion/fuzz and sustain.

Judging from the sample audio, the layered octave overtones of this fuzz box will appeal to players that want to experiment with unconventional sounds. It maybe ideal if you are looking to spice up your solo playing or for building unique sounding soundscapes.

Like all ModKits pedals, The Contortionist is designed to give you the chance to build and customize your own fuzz box. Those that are new to pedal assembly will find the building process to be enlightening, while experienced musicians and pedal modders will be able to modify the pedal or even add extra features and controls.

This kit comes with all the necessary parts to build the Fuzz box effect, this includes the pre-drilled enclosure, which you can use as a canvass for your personalized graphics. To ensure ease of assembly, the kit comes with an easy-to-follow instruction manual that will guide you as integrate the parts via point-to-point wiring. According to the website, The Contortionist pedal has a build difficulty of 3 out of 5, where 5 is the most difficult.

The official press release says, “All you need to provide are hand tools, a soldering iron and solder”. The Contortionist High Octane Fuzz is designed to run on a 9V battery. It can also work with a 9-volt adapter should you prefer, and it can be purchased separately.
