  1. Greetings, I need help getting some information on a ’56 Strat I’ve had for some time. When originally purchased it had been refinished in the most heinous way imaginable, so it’s original color was lost. I assumed it was a sunburst, as just about all were. Given that, I pulled the spray-can suburst off it and had a qualified individual put a nitro sunburst ala the originals. When I pulled off the neck while taking off the finish, I noted that both the neck and body were dated 12/56, which seemed to confirm my plans for a sunburst finish.

The one thing I variable I didn’t consider properly is that this particular Strat has factory installed gold hardware. This was almost unheard of in ’56, as all production models had chrome hardware. I’ve talked to a ton of people, even some of the great folks at Fender, and nobody can lead me to any records that would help narrow down what guitar went out in December with gold hardware. As I’ve gotten to know more about Strats during that period, I’ve come to the conclusion that this guitar was either a special order with gold, probably meaning it was a celebrity order, or that this was a Mary Kaye and originally bone white. Another reason I didn’t consider the Mary Kaye option was that from everything I’ve read Mary Kaye’s didn’t go into production until the spring of ’57. Now I’m rambling. Anyway, does anyone have any insights into this case of lost identity? I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s probably a Mary Kaye made from ’56 parts, which would make it one of the first ones, or even possibly one she ordered before it went into production. This of course, would necessitate a new finish, but I can live with that…lol Anyway, please share your thoughts.

    1. Noel uses quite a varried selection of kit, originaly he used Epiphone Riverias but of late has been using mainly Gibson Les Pauls, and in the current albumn he seems to be quite attached to his Gibson Trini Lopez. To best get Noels sound i’d recomend using a Gibson guitar with a marshal amp and turn it up loud!!
