I'd say practice music that you find is difficult to play but music you like. Thats the only way to push your way forward really. Also, dont forget your lead playing, you can really sound really impressive if you pull off a good solo, slow, simple playing is good and so is flashy playing too! I think that some of the best guitarists are ones that can mix lead parts in between chords, which is quite tricky, try it, you'l get better. I try to morph different styles of music into my playing, at the moment its a mixture of blues and funk. What can i say! Improvise, play stuff over records.
