What is the cheapest hardware/software rig i can get to record my guitar ono my computer? I have a decent machine with plenty of USB and PCI ports available, and enough harddrive to save all the music I want, so I just need the importing and recording tools
go to your local software store and get a cheap multitrack recording software, ive seen software at about £15, install it on your PC and run it, if you have a pretty up to date machine you dont need anything else, you will get quite good results and then upgrade as you go along, i use a creative audigy 2 sound setup, i get good results from that but i used to get some good quality recordings from my old standard card, all you need is the multitrack software and there are loads of people that make it, you can even trial it for free on the web.
Or you could buy a stand alone mutitrack digital recording studio, you can get them very cheap, 4 track is about £150.

You can find a heap of Multitrack Recording programs to try at http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/MULTITRACK_RECORDING/
My son and I downloaded a program called Audacity. It's a free download and you can add effects, change tempo, and multiple tracks. I just use a 1/4-1/8 adapter and go into the sound card.
It's free so you won't be out anything. The first recording we did we just used his mic in front of the amp and it sounded OK.
