As an avid Partridge fan, I remember that episode, and always assumed it was Mick Karn of Japan (perhaps Tim would understand my mistake). Nope; the track is “Music for Chameleons” by Gary Numan and he employed a young Pino Palladino. I saw them both at a GN gig of about that time. His fretless playing is very distinctive; cf Paul Young’s “Wherever I Lay My Hat”
I ought to put Chameleons in the Bass Cat’s “Best Bass Riffs” thread; and I’ve got a horrible feeling that John Deacon’s “Another One Bites the Dust” isn’t mentioned there, either.
