Six-time Grammy Award winning artist, acclaimed by critics throughout the world as "the greatest living guitarist"

Jose's guitar work is legendary. For over 30 years he has been "instrumental" in dignifying the acoustic guitar by bringing it to a level of acceptance rivaled by few in the industry. Soul, pop, rock, jazz, classical - in English Spanish and Italian, Jose has delighted people worldwide with his inimitable style. Honored by Guitar player Magazine, he is in their "Gallery of the Greats"; his hands are 'enbronzed' in Madame Tussaud's in London and Billboard Magazine has bestowed a Lifetime Achievement Award on the man whose life has been the guitar.

The Cuatro

Many interested in Feliciano's music have noticed his playing of the cuatro, the Puerto Rican stringed instrument. It is rather small, is sometimes quite beautifully decorated and sounds a little like a mandolin. Jose has played the instrument for many, many years, as his uncle played and even made them in Puerto Rico. Jose now has several and he considers them one of his most special possessions. A number of recordings include the sound of the cuatro, "Feliz Navidad", "The Little Drummer Boy", "Ponte A Cantar", to name a few. One of the tracks from "Señor Bolero" also has the distinctive sound of the cuatro.

To string this instrument one needs to use four sets of silk and steel light gauge strings which make up the unique combination: 2 High E's; 2 B's; 2 3rds; a 4th and a 1st and a 5th with a 3rd or a 2nd string. This combination allows for the seemingly "happy " or "jovial" sound of the cuatro, which is crisp and clean.

The Electric

Jose Feliciano's love of the guitar includes also, those he plugs into an amp! In fact, though it isn't commonly considered, he has been playing the electric guitar nearly as long as the acoustic, though his image is that of an acoustic player. He has a nice collection of electric guitars including a cherry red Les Paul Guitar, autographed to Jose by Les Paul, himself, right on the front. What a treasure!

On the road, Jose tours with an electric guitar that, over the years, has evolved into quite a special instrument. It's a custom-made DiCarlo solid body guitar that he has used for the last 15 years or so. Over time, it has been lovingly worked to a point where we've coined it, Jose's Super Galactica! Some of its features include an on-board (old style) MXR distortion and MXR chorus with 2 double-coil pickups (Humbuckers). He likes GHS Boomers-Extra light-strings. Jose considers the electric guitar an important part of who he is, musically, and rarely performs without it.

The Acoustic

Clearly, however, it's safe to say, the acoustic guitar is Jose Feliciano's first love. Since he was a boy the acoustic guitar has been his best friend, his passport to the world; his salvation, as he puts it. It has been the source of his success and he will forever be grateful to this beautiful instrument.

Jose has played a number of different acoustic guitars, over the years. His very first, at nine years old, was a ten dollar, second-(or third!)-hand guitar given to him by his father. "Dad surprised me one day with this paper bag and in it was my first guitar!"

Later, he heard of the master guitar maker, Candelario del Gado, in Los Angeles, California. He made a number of guitars for Jose over a period of time but Jose remembers fondly that Candelario even lent him a guitar in the early years when he couldn't quite afford it on his own.

The last guitar Candelario ever made, it is told, is a very special one in Jose's collection: The Carved Head, as it is refered, was photographed extensively and used for recording purposes, but rarely, if ever, taken on tour. It gets its named from the carving on the head of the stock where a bold "JOSE" can be seen. There's a nice picture of it on the Romance in the Night LP.

The sons and nephews still run the shop, Candelas Guitars, in East L.A., and carry on the tradition of the master luthier, Candelario del Gado.

Currently, and for the last 10 years of so, Kirk Sand of The Guitar Shoppe, in Laguna Beach, Calilfornia, has been custom-building instruments for Jose. Kirk and Jim Mathewson have developed a design with Jose that they call aptly, the Jose Feliciano Model. It has the larger-than-usual dreadnot body but, of course, with nylon strings and a cutaway for easier
access up the fret board. It's a lovely instrument with sweet richness that is both deep and clean. You can hear it whenever you see Jose on tour or listen to him on record, most recently, of course, on Señor Bolero.

Nail Care

As an acoustic guitarist of Feliciano's stature, you can imagine that his nails are extremely important to his ability to perform.

His left hand, which frets the guitar, has very short nails, except for the "pinkie" and thumb nail which are not used for playing. His right hand, however, is the more particular in that it is the one that creates the crisp, clear sound that is necessary against the nylon strings. The nails cannot be too short or long, for that matter, and must have a perfect roundness with absolutely no "corners" at the cuticle. The pinkie, again, is not as important as the others, while the
right thumb nail is most crucial to his performance. It is a bit longer than the rest on that hand, and again, is perfectly round and very strong. God certainly blessed him there. One supposes the stimulation to his hands has helped his circulation, too, over the years---why, after all, are one's toenails stronger than the nails of the hand???

Tuning the cuatro

I have just purchased a cuatro from Puerto Rico, and despite the fact that I have played guitar for years, I don't know how to tune it.
I would appreciate any help or info from anybody who is knowledgable
on the subject. Thank You Very Much

Re: Tuning the cuatro and the notes on the staff

Heres how the notes relate to the notes on a piano:
Bb-Ee-aa-dd-gg

"B" is the note just below middle C (or the C right below the staff on a treble cleff or right above on a bass clef)

"b" is the octave above "B"
(or the b on the middle staff of a treble clef).

"E" is the E above middle C.

"e" is the e above the "b" (or on the fourth space up on the treble cleff)

"a" is below the "b" (on the second space up on the treble cleff)

"d" is below "e" (the fourth line up on the treble clef)

"g" is above "e" (the space above e or the last line of the the treble cleff ("f"))

Hope this helps. Email me if you have any questions

Re: Tuning the cuatro

Yeah...the cuatro is tuned in 4ths
the 1st 2 strings are tuned to a B. The lowest string would be an octave higher than its partner since it is a thin string. The next pair would be E in the same fashion. The next pair A, the next D, and the next G. The only problem with tuning to A 440 is that cuatros are purposedly built 'out of tune'. They are tuned uniquely to give it a strong 'folk sound'. To tune it, the D strings would probably have to be tuned very flat in order to put the second fret Es to be in tune with the pair of E strings. If that confuses you just give me an email.

May I join you. I am in the same situation. I have a cuatro from Venezuela. It sounds great but I don't know how to play it.

Re: Tuning the cuatro

I too am in the same boat. I know that the tuning is Bb, Ee, aa, dd, gg; but where are these tones on the staff? I.e., which "e" and which "g", et cetera?

Old School Spanish Feliciano

There is definitely nothing that touches Jose's old School Spanish stuff in my book. As a young Puerto Rican growing up on the island, I was witness to a string of albums that Jose released during the `70's with some fantastic guitar playing and very emotional lyrics. The beauty of it all was that I was just starting to play the guitar and became very proficient (and still am) at emulating and singing just like Jose. Of course, playing guitar like him is a totally different story. Anyway, I've been studying Jose's guitar style for some time and have searched up and down for any tablature covering his early years, but there is absolutely nothing covering this period. His incredible ease of mixing Jazz, Classical, Flamenco, Blues and Pop all into one style is just unheard of. I have since employed someone who is into transcribing music for a living so that I can have him break down and prepare these songs for me in tabalture. There are just so many great songs that no one has ever seem to have heard of or even remember, like "Sinceridad", "Muchas Gracias", "Un Poco Tarde", "Tu Me Haces Falta", "Sabra Dios", "La Barca", "Sin Fe", "Moliendo Cafe" and so many others. Jose's playing during this time was at it's best and the wonderful part for someone who plays guitar is that he is just accompanied by a bass and congas on most of this music, which brings his guitar playing to the forefront. I have all of Jose's collection on albums because some stuff has still not been released on CD's. Jose made some early recordings in Argentina and Mexico, so I'm not sure if some of this stuff will ever see the light of day, but I'm praying and hoping that it does. My goal, as a musician is to keep Jose's style alive, and to pass it on as time permits. Hopefully one day, Jose might start putting out some videos or DVD's of his playing style on his own.

Jose, "My Mentor!"

I have been a life time student of the guitar and have always consider Jose Feliciano to be finest guitarist in the world. Unless you have studied the guitar, it is opinion thatno one could begain to understand just how great Jose is!

I have been studying Jose now for over thirty years! I remember the first time I went to his concert thirty years ago! At that time I thought I was a good musican and after that concert I gave up the guitar for three weeks. I could not believe what I saw and heard!

Actually, Jose on that night many years ago helped me to understand and grow as a musican. What I learned was there is only one Jose in the world. He was given to us to love, cherish and enjoy!

Last year I went to Jose's concert in Fresno and experienced a magical night. I was on the front row, I was so close to him! He was even better now than thirty years ago. I went home from that concert and practiced my guitar for over three hours into the morning!

Later that morning, I went down to the local music store to purchase a set of guitar strings. I picked a guitar and starting playng "Light My Fire!" When I stopped playing a couple standing there said "you sound like Jose Feliciano!" I told them that that was the nicest compliment anybody could pay me, but that I was not good enough to carry Jose's guitar in its case to his next concert!"

Finally, my life time wish has been to meet Jose someday in person! I would to express to him how much I love and repect his music!

Sincerely,

Rod Flint
