This popular thread has been given its own page : levin guitars
My father gave me a levin guitar a few years ago, he bought in 2nd hand in the mid sixties for £50, from a friend. The guitar is an electic accoustic, with a sun burst finish and it is by far the best guitar I own for sound and smooth action.
I have a Levin LT-18 jumbo which I bought second-hand in Sound City, London in Summer 1972. I was asked to try it out when I was really trying out a new Gibson acoustic and a Martin. The sound was so rich and mellow (even then!) that after about 3 hours I just had to choose it above the others.
I have never been able to determine the year of manufacture as a few short years after buying it, Levin was absorbed by Martin who do not appear to have any information on Levin models.
The guitar has the serial number 488323
I would love to find out when it was built.
Finally, after much "googling" I found the list of Levin serial numbers on the Vintage Goya Guitars site which not only confirmed that the guitar was built in 1968 but also had a copy of the original 1968 Levi Catalogue (in Swedish). The catalogue also confirmed that the guitar was made of first-class materials, no wonder Martin bought them out, it would have been worth while just to have access to their stock of wood.
I bought a new blonde Levin LT-18 Super Goliath, serial number 480812 in December 1967 for £60, and I still have it. It is still a beautiful looking/sounding guitar, very similar to the Martin D-41. I guess yours was made around 66-68. Mine has 6 individually height adjustable bridge pieces, instead of a single one, and a drop down bridge just like the Martin.
After the bridge string-locator pins broke, I had to buy a set of Martins, but had to ream out the bridge holes since the Martins are bigger. The action is therefore easily adjustable like on a strat, and it is great for fingerpicking, with a perfect fingerboard width.
Hope you can find more info. Cheers Mike
My Levin LT 18 was bought in 1966, in Hong Kong, and bears the serial number 464349. Hope this is of use in your quest.
Alan Jones manufacture as a few short years after buying it, Levin was absorbed by Martin who do not appear to have any information on Levin models.

They sent me a leaflet showing the Levin guitar range. This was I believe just after Martin took them over.

I went to http://www.gitarren.se/radotips/sernr_levin.html to find out the age of my Goliath – which I have had since buying it from a school friend in the mid `60s – where there is a comprehensive list of years and their serial numbers. Yours would seem to be a 1968 model.
They are excellent guitars and easily out do, as sound goes, any Gibson or Martin of more recent manufacture. I cannot vouch for those produced at the same time, but they now cost several thousand pounds.
I hope this helped.

I have a levin sunburst non cutaway archtop, f-holes, with a silver label inside, reading ‘Herman Carlson levin, and 10 ars (year?) garanti (guarantee) which has a beautiful mellow tone, and plays like a dream, such low action it’s quite amazing on a very low ebony archtop bridge with thumbwheels. The serial number stamped in the end of the headstock is 119961, which I think dates it around 1939??? It has a pearl inlay of a scripted Levin on a black headstock. A bit of crazing on the body, but it must be 60+ years old and the neck is straight as a die and solidly joined to the body. Are these collectable or just a well made guitar lost to time. never seen another. It also has a hofner senator type pickguard with an old de armond floating pick up attached. vol & tone knobs on the pickguard. The only thing I replaced was the tailpiece for a genuie gibson one as it had split i the chrome along the bottom fixing bracket and would pull out of tune. Thought i’d bought a dud but the new tailpiece made it. it’s superb if a little aged. An ideas? Neil

To set the record right, the Levin guitars are a Swedish guitar built in Gothenburg, Sweden. I have an old classical/nylon string model which I purchased back around 1971. Needs some work to get back in shape but still has great tone and feel. Back then they cost the equivalent of a a few hundred $’s, up to the top of the line which was probably around $600 or so. They made both steel and nylon string guitars.

dear sir or madam. I have a Levin steel six-string model number LN26 It was bought in Dublin in the early sixties (I think) I have to repair it but I would love to know from what year it is and if there were many made. The string length is 24 and 3/4 and it has individual string height adjusters.- little plastic screws set into the bridge, which I find a bit naff. Any iknfo would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I’ve got two Levin guitars – an acoustic archtop and an electric archtop – the electric was made in 1959. They’re Swedish and were made from 1900 – 1977 – I think they’re fairly common – I’ve seen four or five in Adelaide, South Australia for around AU$600 – AU$1500

I was reading the posts on the forum and checked the serial number on my LT’18. the number is 4644 06. Does that make sense? Wasn’t sure about the space between the first four numbers and the last two.

Hello im from Holland i have a Guitar from Levin A.B Herman CCarlson year 1950
serial nr 238572 and there is a 19 at the end of the serialnr but dont know what it means
Look at this link you see the pictures

I recently bought what I believe to be a Levin LT18. It has the offset mother of pearl markers on the finger board and the individually adjustable saddles for each string but the serila number is 3584. I understand that the serial number indicates it was manufactured around 1905(!) but the guitar was only marketed from the 1960s.
Have I bought a fake?
It sounds pretty good………….

: I have in my possession a Kasuga Les Paul< hand carved body, mother of pearl neck ivy inlay. I want to know where I can look up its history I have picturies of my beauty. I believe it was made in the seventies, dont know perhaps to special order. Any ideas?
: I seem to be the only one with a Kasuga 12 string! I bought it new in the 70’s and still have it. The instrument plays well and have never needed attention in spite of being strung for 30+ years.
I own a Kasuga WG 250 which I purchased in Tokyo while on R&R from Vietnam in 1968. It has a zero fret. Is yours the same?
I have one too- I bought it when I first graduated in 1975 ….at that point it was about £75 and I had to take it on hire-purchase at £6 per month in order to afford it . Its got a lovely sound and has given me a lot of pleasure over the years, although I ve pretty much given up playing in recent years . Its in perfect condition.
i just inherited my Grandfathers Kasuga. your not the only one. ha
ive got a kasuga bass guitar…im going to sell it but know like nothing about it…help plz!
I bought an acoustic steel string kasuga KD 350S in sunburst for £80 in 1987. I bought it from a fellow student in Nottingham with no idea of it’s history, but a mate with more experience than I had, thought that the local music shop had nothing to touch it for sound. It still sounds great. It’s had the bridge thing at the top of the neck (is that called the nut?) already replaced with what appears to be an ivory or bone bit, apart from that it’s all original. I’ve read the history of the Kasuga guitar venture and I’m delighted to own it. I’ve not played any acoustic guitars in my price range that compare so it’s still my instrument of choice.

The story:
In May of â72, a portentous advertisement appeared in The Music Trades. In an ad stretching across the top of a two-page spread, drawn cartoon-fashion with a jet soaring from Japan to the United States, the headline read, âKasuga Guitars Come To America.â Kasuga was a guitarmaker established in Nagoya, Japan, in the late â60s. In â67, Tommy Moore, the successful musical instrument merchandiser from Ft. Worth, Texas, and one of the founders of Hondo, visited Japan in order to strike up a guitarmaking deal. With only a voucher of credit in his pocket and no contacts, Moore hooked up with a Mr. Kaku, who steered him to Tokai Gakki. Tokai had become very successful in Japan making and marketing the Pianaca, a keyboard harmonica used in Japanese schools. On December 15, 1970, Moore and Tokai Gakki entered a joint venture called Tokai USA Inc., and Tokai began making private label and OEM guitars.
Tokai quickly found it couldnât keep up with demand, so it found a factory that could meet its quality standards: Kasuga. Another joint venture was established between Tokai USA and Kasuga called Kasuga International. Marketing offices were established in Singapore, Zurich, and Frankfurt. In â72, these guitars began to come into America.
In December, â72, an ad touted the Kasuga line, copies of the most popular Gibson, Fender, and Martin acoustic and electric solidbody designs. Presumably these included Telecasters. These were sold under the Kasuga name (briefly; a notice of Kasuga acoustics appeared in Guitar Player in September, â72) and carrying the monikers of various importers, as in the â60s.
In December, â72, U.S. Musical Merchandise published its new Sekova catalog, replete with a full line of copies, including its Sekova version of the Tele, probably produced by Arai.
:I have a Kasuga T 20 12 string – no 407 posted on the internal bracing. Bought it early 70’s. It suffered from terminal neck bend but I couldnt bare to part with it as it sounded so good. Finally and only recently as its been under the bed for years managed to get it in reasonable fettle with some professional work to the bridge. Now playable and in use for fun daily. Havnt managed to find any listings for this model anywhere. Any ideas although I would never part with it.
In 1980 I purchased an F5 model mandolin in N. Hollywood CA. It’s serial # 100. It came with a hard shell case. It is in Perfect condition.I play this instrument alot. and I enjoy it’s sound and action. Please tell me more about the mandolins from this time.: I am not interested in selling my mandolin, just looking for history.
Hi, I have a solid body, hand carved custom lead/rhythym guitar.
It is made of american maple and has maple leaves carved onto the body. There is a creeping "IVY" vine snaking up the neck. Frets are leaf shaped mother of pearl.
It is finished in clear varethane or something similar.
It has twin chromed "10 henri" pickups and chrome hardware.
I bought it brand spankin new in Portland Oregon in 1976 from "Caaptain WhizzEagle.’ (I paid $375 I think.)
It was in their loft for at least a year before I bought it.
The seller told me that he had bought a half dozen of them and each was different since they were individually carved.

Hi
I have a Kasuga bass, It´s a Fender copy and I love it.
I traded it for a Gibson copy back in 1980, and it was quite old already then.
The sound is very good and it´s very playable.
The tuning is very good.
I just read the story about Kasuga in Vintage guitar, but what happend later on ?…
All the best from Sweden
I’ve got a few Kasuga’s over the years this is my list
Rickenbacker 4001 Bass copy
Gibson 330 copy (dot)
Telecaster copy and a
Classical Guitar
All are really awesome and enjoy playing them, wonderful guitars action wise if anyone gets a chance to buy one go for it the value for $ is worth it
I have a Kasuga G318 Classical Guitar i would like any information that i could get on it so far nobody has even heard of it and there is nothnig on the internet about it
I have a very old Kasuga acoustic, its in top condition and has been played alot in its life, Im in love with the thing and havnt found another Guitar that sounds nearly as good.
Picked it up for $250au, Its model no G U3610, i cant find any info on it anywhere on the net. It dosnt exist!
I have an artical from vintage guitar mag about the Kasuga Guitar co. Tom Morris left the united states in 1968 to Japan with credits to start a guitar co. He approched the Tokia Musical insturment Co. to produce them . The production began to overwelm the Tokai so they approched the Kasuga guitar co in 1970 to continue production . These guitars are concidered to be better than most Japan models produced in the 70s I own a 1972 Tele Bass a one of a kind do to the fact that no Tele’s were ever known to be produced or no records of them were kept. It is very playable and I do play it regulary . E mail if you wish to know more
I was given last week a Kasuga Acoustic from a client last week. Raced home and threw on a new packet of nylon strings, and I have to say it has a really cool tone.
Kasuga model no:1118.
Does anyone know the history at all ?
With Respect
Shane
I have a 1972 kasuga guitar Model KF840. It is in mint condition. Can you tell me what it is worth? Thank you.
I purchased mine new in 1972 at the age of 14. It cost me $135.00 back then without a case. Unfortunately a drunken friend set it down on the floor and proceeded to step on it and break the neck whih I repaired with two part epoxy. It still however plays and sounds beautiful and I would assume the value depending on condition is much more than the $135.00 that I paid in 1972 for mine. great find and good luck. If you ever consider selling it I would have an interest. Regards, Scott.

I have a Kasuga Guitar that was given to me. It is a Model KC370, still has the made in Japan sticker on it. It was made in 1972. The sticker says Kasuga Gakki on it, I guess that is the name of the manufacturer. It also then has a stamp in it that says "NW". Any idea of the value of this guitar?
Thanks,
Michael

Hey I have one as well passed down from my mom. It has the label on it still and is serial #1550 and says it was manufactured for CF martin industries. I have heard they are woth alot more if they did not take off the label when it came into the u.s.
Hi, I got one too maybe you can send me a photo of it?

I have owned a Kasuga strat since 1993. Previous owner bought it new in the mid 70s (He bought a new US Fender, then he wanted the Kasuga back, but it was gifted to me by my wife so he couldn’t have it.). This guitar has been played by many excellent musicians during it’s life and they all like playing it. Bridge pickup has been replaced at some stage. This guitar far exceeds the playability and tone of any other Japanese strat copies I have played.

I have taken the guitar to many teachers and after playing it, they wished they had one and said that they would gladly pay AU$600 for it but i dont want to let it go. its really quite a nice guitar and i think we should exchange photo’s and get to know more about them. i am quite curious.
cheers.

Anyone know anything about the Kasuga SD-1 acoustic? Just picked it up at the flea market. Its brown, but got the crazy point in it like the Fender J-5.
Anyone have any info on the Kasuga model 1118? She’s a hard lass to find any info on.
Just bought a Kasuga w250. 1972 acoustic guitar from a boot sale for very little money, I,ve just looked it up on ebay and the one I,ve seen is a slightly later model going at $256 dollars. It,s in pretty good condition with considerable wear on the frets, all the way down the neck.also the fret board is worn in places but the body work is in great condition, with a floral scratchplate. Who ever has owed it as used it well over the years. It is a similar build to the Eko ranger six,of which I have in my collection
hello,
I have a 1972 kasuga t-16. I have not been able to find any info on this model. does anyone have any info on it or know if its worth anything?
Thanks
I collect them.
I have a Gibson es175, a Barney Kessel, two strats, two les pauls and an SG. Nice guitars.
How do you date Kasuga Guitar KC-330 (491)? Anyone?
I just pulled a 12-string Kasuga T-250 out of a closet in my basement, and I’d love to know more about it. How old it is, for example. I can’t find any serial number stamped on it, but on one of the cross braces inside the sound hole, it has “783” stamped on it. If that’s month and year, it’s either 1978 March or July 1983.
Anyone have any idea whether that’s a clue to its age, or not, or how to tell the age in another way? There’s absolutely nothing else written on the label inside, except the brand and model.
Thanks to anyone that can help. 🙂
When did kasuga produce 12 string accoustic F2020s for Sekova. I have one in good shape and I’m curious.
Hi all.
I have a Kasuga 12 string model GU3614.
My father bought it new in the early-mid 1970’s and ended up giving it to me in the late 80’s.
It is an AWESOME guitar to play and is in good condition for it’s age.
I would like some info on this model if anyone can help.
Also, what was the original price and how much is it worth now?
Thanks heaps.
Mick.
I own a Kasuga T-20 12 string acoustic, made in 1970. I neither know nor care how much it is worth. It is beautiful.
I bought a concert Kasuga classical guitar from a garage sale. It plays well. Does anyone know its value?
I bought my kC330 (classical six string) from Don Juan music in Portland oregon about 72-73. The Preachers wife was teaching guitar so she came with and tuned up five brand new ones. they all varied in tone but the first one rang like a bell. i am 55 and have never seen another kasuga. Mine has only improved with age. I played it tonight and thought I’d see if there are any more out there. I have yamaha twelves and sixes as well as washburn, emperador, harmony, and a couple no name wonders but the kasuga rivals all in tone and resonance.

: : I Think your products are OK but I don’t know how much better it is. Reason being, since I am not a guitar player, your elaborate features on guitars doesn’t appeal to me. Futheremore, I have spent a great deal of time on the your website searching for a guild acoustic fretless bass guitars with know luck. In addition, I went to the online store to my surprise it was over populated with fenders stuff and some. I think your website doesn’t give a thought for bass players and yet we are the ones who keep it together.
If you have interest in my business, I would like to see full discription of guilds’ acoustic fretless bass guitars with options/possibilities of fret markings, electronics,fretlboard-ebony, and the cost.

I have an Ibanez AS 200 1981 exactly like John Scofield plays. I would like to know what its worth on the market?
i’ve just recently bought an ibanez as200 1981 model. It was not all original because it has grover tuners and the bridge and tailpiece have been painted. I got it for $1600 australian which is about US$850. A mint original one would probably fetch $12-$1300 US. Good luck
If you decide that you would like to sell that ’81 as200…I would love to hear a little bit more about it. I am very interested in finding a nice one-thanks alot
I have just aquired a Hofner Guitar body, model President which I wish to restore. Does anyone have any visual info about these guitars. It’s serial no is 1730

I have one too. Mine plays and sounds great. I put a Dimarzio Distortion pickup in the bridge position like Robin Zander of Cheap Trick and sounds great. Its hard to find much info on this guitar.
hey man i got the same guitar.. my dad bought it for me when he was a guitar show in nashville. ya i’ve also been told that it was started by former employees of fender durin the CBS era.. its based off of a 50’s tele from what i’ve read. alls i know is it plays great an sounds, i added a seymor duncan hotrail to the bridge, only mod.. hang on to it :).
I just found one of these for a pittance. 4 Strings. Old Black paint cracked Made in London. Has a peg dolly picture on the skin which seems fine. Not in tune and I’m not sure how well the wooden peg tuners work as they have what looks like a brass screw through them. Not like a guitar tuner. Can anybody help me with info. Certainly seems playable. Has steel strings. It’s almost like a small banjo but it says uke on it.

I don’t know. I had bought one v4 1973 and a 15" box for 300$. but I’m still looking for another one and i would pay you 300 – 350$ (whithout any box) if it is in good condition. But I’m from switzerland and I don’t want to spend a lot of money on transport paying or other taxes.
so, if you’re interested in selliing it, please write me an e-mail
