This guitar is part of Washburn’s three new 3/4 size small body guitar, which target students, beginners and players who prefer smaller instruments.

Many of the 3/4 size acoustics in the market today come with conventional designs and stripped down aesthetics, but the new WCDM55K is meant to go against this norm. Straying from the “usual” basic designs, this guitar comes with a distinct shape as found on the bigger Comfort Series guitars, it does not compromise on aesthetics, and more importantly does not skimp on tone.

The Comfort Series offers a more convenient and comfortable take on the traditional acoustic guitar body, and as such it is the ideal shape for young players or for those who are learning the instrument. The next logical step is to then make this design available in a more compact size, and that is exactly what they did with the WCDM55K.

Like the bigger Comfort Series models, this one features a beveled strip of rosewood at the lower bout that serves as a forearm rest. And it’s not just mere functionality because the company was able to implement the bevel in such a way that it visually becomes a part of the top’s rosewood binding, the end result being a design that’s functional and easy on the eyes.

A unique feature of this guitar is the partial “Comfort” cutaway on the bottom of the upper bout, which allows better upper fret access without totally cutting away from the body. This is crucial because the 3/4 size body is small enough as it is without the cutaway, so implementing a semi-cutaway helps both tone and volume projection. It also helps that the unique cutaway looks impressive and unique.

On top of having a unique shape, WCDM55K utilizes non-conventional tonewoods, specifically koa. It has koa top, back and sides which gives the body a dark brown earthy look. It also affects tone, resulting in a sound that sits between mahogany and spruce in terms of warmth and balance. With its exotic koa body and unique shape, this 3/4 acoustic will easily stand out from what you normally see in stores or during jams and gigs.

The neck is crafted from mahogany and joins the body at the 14th fret. It is topped by a rosewood fingerboard that comes with traditional dot inlays, matching the guitar’s rosewood bridge and rosewood capped headstock. It has a short scale length of 22.5″ and a nutwidth of 1.69″.

Other features include maple inlaid Washburn logo and stylized W, GraphTech nut, alternating maple and mahogany rosette, and gold Grover tuners with ebonite buttons.

Finally the new Washburn WCDM55K is expected to have a reasonable price tag, with an RRP of £259 in the UK, which converts to around $400. For further details, head over to Washburn.
