EHX Silencer

Electro-Harmonix announces the availability of the new Silencer, a versatile noise reduction pedal with gated effects loop.

Electro-Harmonix Silencer

This pedal is not your average noise gate, it provides fine-tuning controls so you can apply precise amount of noise reduction to your signal and allows for complex signal routing via the built-in effects loop.

Launched at the recently concluded summer NAMM show, the Silencer is Electro-Harmonix' most sophisticated noise gate pedal, with more controls and connectivity options than conventional pedals. It is equipped to work as an inline pedal or you can use it to gate an entire chain of effects conveniently.

To let you precisely set the gate algorithm, the pedal comes with three knobs that let you adjust noise reduction, threshold, and release time. These knobs can be tweaked to handle various instruments, the type of pickups used, and your playing style, and it does so without taking up much pedalboard space.

The Threshold knob lets you adjust the level needed to open the noise gate and allow your signal to pass through. It starts at full gate open which allows all your signal to pass through, turning the knob clockwise requires more level to open the gate. The Reduction knob lets you control how much the noise reduction is applied on the signal, you can set it between -70dB to +4dB which interestingly allows you to boost the signal if you prefer. Setting the reduction between 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock is recommended by EHX for a more natural sounding gating effect. Finally The Release knob lets you adjust the speed of the envelop signal that closes the gate. You can set it to a quick 8ms to a slow 4 second at full clockwise setting. Again, a 12 o'clock setting is recommended as starting point.

The manual recommends that you start with Threshold set to its minimum position, Reduction set to maximum, Release set to minimum, and The Silencer’s LED lit. You can then turn up the volume knob on your guitar while holding the strings to stop any feedback. This will let you hear the noise coming through your amplifier, which you can then reduce by turning up the Threshold knob.

The pedal features buffered bypass which allows the effects loop to remain in your signal path when the gate is bypassed. It can be powered via a 9 volt battery or an optional EHX 9.6DC AC adapter. Finally, like all EHX pedals, the Silencer comes packed in a rugged chassis.

The Electro-Harmonix Silencer pedal is currently retailing for $57.60. For more information, you can head over to EHX.
