BC Rich Temple of Worship

Hi,
Just a wee bit of background about myself I am
29, and have been playing guitar/bass for 15 years .
Throughout the years I have had Gibsons, Fenders,
Rickies, Yamahas, Ibanez, Washburns etc… and was
generally very happy with what I had at that time. I
then discovered B.C. Rich guitars and was hooked.
They beat every competitor in every dep., build
quality, sound, variety of woods, pickups etc, support
was fantastic and so on. I then began to collect more
B.C. Rich’s and haven’t been disappointed with any of
them.

    JM in WI

It’s roughly a 3/4 size guitar. It has a Floyd Rose. It’s tuned to A. It’s a strat style. Lightning paint job. When I bought it, someone told me BC Rich made a very limited number of them. The SN is B 8679. How can I find out more about it? For instance, if it is real, if it is rare, etc.\n\nThanks,\nJeff

I have a Very nice, well maintained B.C. Rick Warlock neck through with a widow headstock, double locking tremelo, better B.C. Rich humbuckers that origonal, with and orangeish yellow sunburst finish and two stripes continuing the neck thru the body. This guitar is in mint condition. For the guitar I am asking $760. I also have a B.C. Rich hardshell coffin case. Which the company does not make any more. I actually bought the last one they had in stock, so they tell me, but they don’t make it anymore. I am asking an extra $40 to make it and even $800 but if you are just interested in the case it will be $100 considering that the case is in mint condition and I bought it for $160. I have a Rex Playboy serial# L6955. No other markings exist on this guitar other than”Rex” written in brass colour with a circle around the word. The word “playboy running vertically down the neck. It has “deluxe ” brand tunning pegs. Smaller scale guitar body. Flat bar type pearl frett markers. Fat neck, action is a bit high but very playable with a wonderful tone. No truss rod adjustment access. Does anyone know who made this guitar?

i also own a Rex Playboy and I have owned a number of Haromny guitars; the Rex guitar is far surperior to a Harmony, anyone who actually handled one would see that it is more comparable to a Gibson

    4. Re: Rex Playboy Guitar
      Angus MacDonald

I hate to disagree with the person who posted the first responce, but Rex Guitars were not made by Gretsch, nor was Gretsch ever called anything but Gretsch. Rex guitars were made by Harmony. As far as I know they did not have a model called the Playboy but they could have. Some of the guitars that bore the Rex name were made in Europe. If you will check out the Harmony database you will find a history of these guitars. I have a Rex Aragon archtop guitar, real nice with the original case. These are great old guitars and I think quality wise compare with anything out there today. As far as the history of Gretsch, you can check out the offical Gretsch web site for the history.

I bought mine from a old collector and was shown a catolog that during 1943-44 ? (2-3 years only) rex aragon MADE guitars for gretsch.

        Mike Edgerton

Actually Gretsch used the Rex name on mandolins in the early 1900’s. The Rex Playboy instruments weren’t all made by Harmony, some were made by Kay. The ones that I’ve seen were early 1950’s.

My suggestion would be to speak with Fred Gretsch personally like I did before discounting any information. Until you speak personally with Fred Gretsch about the Rex Playboy guitar as I did, you can look up all the information you want online, but it’s not going to be that same information, and it’s not coming straight from the horses mouth. One thing I think even you would have to agree upon–I think it would be a bit of a stretch to imply the Fred has any reason in the world to lie about this or fabricate some story, and I can tell in the way he was just matter-of-factly telling me all of this, he was just describing some little-known information about the history of HIS and HIS FATHERS company……… Anything else, internet, Google or not, is just hearsay.
I have no reason or desire to get into a "pissing" match with you over this—I’m just telling you what Fred told me personally just before we walked onstage at NAMM. If you disagree, then I suggest you take this matter up personally and directly with Fred Gretsch, because until you do, you’ll never know the truth.
If you want to know about the Fred Gretsch guitar company, or about any of the guitars his company manufactured under any name, ask Fred Gretsch. The reason I even took up his time in the first place was because there was so little information on these guitars, and I kept hearing rumors about them being made by Gretsch, and then, no, they ware made by Harmony. So since we were all just standing around with his wife shootin’ the bull before we started, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to ask him directly about some clarification on the subject. He was very gracious, and there was no pressure, and all I can do is tell you what Fred Gretsch told me. No more, no less.

        1. So what did he say?
          Anonymous

I get that these were not made by Gretsch at any time.
question is whether these were marketed though the Gretsch company?

          no relationship whatsoever?

"I have a Rex Playboy Guitar it has Rex in a circle and the word Playboy. Does anyone know anything about this guitar? Purchased by my father about 1953-54. Thanks"
      ********************************************************
Yes, I have one as well. Mine’s a parlour guitar with a small body and a standard short-scale neck. I really like it, but could find no info on it save for some rumors from some of my friends involved in the Texas Guitar Shows, that it was probably made in the 30’s and the parent company was probably Gretsch. As luck would have it, on the heels of all this, I wound up doing some of the evening concerts at the Los Angeles NAMM show a couple years ago with some reasonably hi-profile musicians, and one of the guys who always liked to come out to see us play was Fred Gretsch. So backstage after our show one night we were hanging out with he and his wife, and I asked him about my new little old guitar……….not verbatum, but in a nutshell to the best of my memory, this, straight from the horses mouth, is what he told me; he said that Gretsch in the beginning used to go by the name Rex, for whatever legal purposes, and used that name up until (if I’m remembering this correctly) around the mid-30’s or 40’s, maybe even very early 50’s (although I’m pretty sure it was only through the mid 30’s or 40’s) at which time they dropped the "Rex" name and just started using the name "Gretsch". I’m told the "Playboy" was only made for a few years, being discontinued around 35 or 39 or so. So basically in essence what we both have are some of the first, and earliest Gretsch’s ever made, but because for some strange reason (probably because there were so few made and so few questions asked about them) none of this is common knowledge, their value as a collectible isn’t quite what it could be……..and also probably because it doesn’t bear the Gretsch name. Kinda reminds me of the logic in raising the value on old-er Fenders that are past the cut-off point where they’re not using the nitrose finish anymore and are post CBS meaning all the wiring and components have changed—those two elements combined with the age of the wood are what made those old (not old-er) Fenders and Gibsons and Gretsch’s so valuable in the first place, NOT just their chronological age. because after CBS took over, and they (ALL guitar co’s) started using urathane (PLASTIC!) for the finish instead of nitro-cellulose, it’s a moot point anyway, because in a collectible what you’re SUPPOSED to be paying for is not just the age of the guitar—you’re paying for the SOUND of the nitro-cellulose finish which dries out through time and lets that old wood breathe along with the older electronics and wiring (and that includes pickup windings, where in the early days no two were done exactly alike) THAT’S what you’re SUPPOSED to be buying in a collectible vintage guitar, because after a certain year in the mid 70’s or so, all you’re doing is paying through the nose for something with inferior electronics and a plastic finish which is NEVER going to change (i.e.–age) and let the guitar breathe…….so you might as well buy a new guitar, instead of a 30 yr old one, because in essence, that’s what you’re getting anyway………..it’s going to sound exactly the same!……and will continue to sound the same for a long long time. Now, if you’re buying a 40 YEAR OLD guitar, then you’re talking about something completely different, and if you’re lucky enough to have something 35-40 yrs old, or older, hang on tight to that sucker and never let it go, because then, and only then, do you have something truly valuable in your hands……………..anything after that is basically just a NEW guitar (tone-wise), is a joke, and you’re just getting ripped off………and yes, of course the nam-de-plum and email address are fictional because I don’t have time to answer a lot of questions about this………but because we both have a Rex Playboy (which I personally hold near and dear to my heart and think is a very special little guitar, AND I was fortunate enough the get the information directly from Fred Gretsch) I wanted to take the time to at least share with you what I had found out……..I hope this helps………….

I usually do not respond to forums as everyone is totally WAY smarter than me…ha ha. Funny how two different guys talked Mr. Gretch and got two completely different answers, really now? The Rex Playboy I have was called a tenor guitar by a local music shop. I bought it in the mountains of Pennsylvania and took it to a music shop to see how it was even tuned. It is apparently tuned like a banjo, I had to have the guitar shop put me together a set of strings and tell me how to tune it. It has body and neck bindings and pearlish square fret inlays. It has a full size acoustic body and a banjo thin neck. I have pics of it on my website and a short song I wrote and recorded with it…”A cue stick”

I too have a very early Rex Playboy. I purchased it a couple of months ago and cannot put ot down. I brought it to a bluegrass jam last week and all the mando and fiddle players bogarded it and I only played it twice in two hours. My friends wanted to know where to get one etc. mine came with a very functional old old hard case that looks like it is made of a plaster type or what the hell composite. It is as cool as the guitar. I paid 300 and would buy another tomorrow. Did Rex playboy ever make an arch top?

NOT true the early ST-3’s didnt have made in USA on headstock. that serial# sounds too low to be a gunslinger & is probably a FAKE. there are many fakes & parts guitars because during buy outs parts were sold to stores, & people who assembled them & passed them off as factory made guitars

It is a 1978 and not the first one of 80. In 78 they made over 2000 so the year number changed twice before we even got to 1980. hence 80001 was the 2001 guitar made 78.

  15. I have a late 80’s ST III. The neck plate has the BC Rich logo, serial number B 7323 and L.A. California U.S.A. on it. The headstock has the BC Rich logo and made in u.s.a. I’m hoping it’s a handmade U.S.A. model, I believe I bought it late 88, early 89. It’s also got a very nice custom graphics finish. I’m trying to find out 1) if it is a handmade BC Rich 2) what type of wood was used for the body? It is a pretty heavy guitar, 3) how much is she worth? Bridge pick up is a Dimarzio super distortion, bridge and neck are single coils, they are the originals and I’m assuming Dimarzio as well. The tremolo is the Ibanez Edge type. Any help would be most appreciated.

    1. yes it was made in USA, not really hand made but cali not NJ. ST-3’s have poor resale value even with a graphic but it also depends on what graphic. the pickup sould be a double whammy in bridge, the ibanez bridge was used on earlier models. DUE TO EBAY they rarely sell for over 400 most pointy headstock strat types dont have resale value unless its an early CHarvel. the body is probably alder but may have been ordered any way. BCRich has NO way to verify boltons. If u can email me a pic. watch ebay & if we can agree on a fair price. ILL BUY IT

    1. Re: NJ series question
      XracerX13

I am attaching an e-mail from the BCrich tech in regards to the NJ models. I hope this answers your question.
      Joe

From the headstock it looks as if your guitar was made during the Class Axe era (80’s to 90’s) and they destroyed all of their production records. The NJ’s are imports, which were originally made in Nagoya Japan, hence where the NJ comes from, currently made in Korea. Unfortunately, I am not sure of all the differences, particularly the body wood, pickups, scale length, hardware, electronics, etc. It is probably very similar to our current Platinum Series guitars & basses, but there are going to be differences in parts, since a different factory now makes our imported models.

The Class Axe guitars are not all made in Japan. They did make some USA made guitars & basses. If the guitar says USA on the HEADSTOCK then it’s American Made. There are some NJ and Platinum models from the Class Axe era with "LA California" or "New Jersey, USA" on the NECK PLATE, these were made in Nagoya, Japan or in South Korea. However, there are some with the New Jersey and/or LA California neck plates that also have Made in USA on the headstock, and those were made in America

: SOME SELL ME A WARLOCK

I have a Very nice, well maintained B.C. Rick Warlock neck through with a widow headstock, double locking tremelo, better B.C. Rich humbuckers that origonal, with and orangeish yellow sunburst finish and two stripes continuing the neck thru the body.

  16. B.C. Rich body
    Bimbo the Homosexual Monkey

I have a B.C. Rich NJ Series Warlock Trans. red and I just moved home across the pond to England. I think the damn workers on the container fucked my guitar up and i have a giant crack on either side of the neck of my guitar, on the body. One crack is about 2 inches long, the bastards! The only problem, besides the obvious, is that I do not know if the crack is in the paint, since it is trans. red and has a different top then a regular, or in the body. I am looking for a site that will sell trans. red NJ Warlock (2000 series)-but I am also refraining from going to B.C. Rich themselves seeing as to how they may make the body as expensive as a mother fucker. I do not need any hardware or a tremelo or anything and I would rather it be a new or immaculate condition body but anything without a giant asshole on the side of the neck is okay. Thanks!\n\nP.S.-I do not know if my E-Mail address is activated, if it ain’t then I will be royally fucked.

Hey all, \nI have a late 70’s/early 80’s Bich, diamond inlay, maple and koa wood and all original pieces for sale. I’m gonna post it on e-bay, but I’m putting it here first. I live in Canada, so it may present some customs fees problems, be forewarned. \nPrice wise, I’m looking to get $1700-$2000 USD for it. It’s negotiable. If your intrested, or know someone who is, e-mail me and I can send you pics and we can talk. I know there are problems inherent in buying a high priced collectors guitar, but they can be worked out.

serial number is 846190. BC846190 is what is generally accepted as an 1984 model bolt on neck mass production import. Set your time frame with a best offer understanding. Take what you get or hang on to it!\nGood luck

      Shaun

Good Luck!!! You probably won’t find one cheap for a while. The Beast is a treasure that is hard to part with. I bought mine new at a music store localy for a mere $700 including case and tax. I have been watching ebay for another one, but they are either going for around $600 or the reserve is not met. What you could do is hit the local pawn shops in your area and hope you find a seller that has no clue what he has. Good Luck!
