Your guitar is one of the sweetest sounding guitars from Japan. Hand made, thin neck and long fingerboard. Can be appreciated by a real player. Cost can go from $150 on the mainland USA,to $1000 in Hawai’i. Personally, I prefer it to the best Takamine or Martin….Good luck.

      Hi,

I have a guitar that may be just like yours. I’m selling mine. Did you ever find out what yours was worth? Also… someone questioned the authenticity of my guitar. Does yours look exactly like this with the same label and everything? http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/msg/2984500144.html
Are you the original owner of yours? Do you know anything about the origin of my / your guitar other than this label?

Thanks a ton. Hope to hear from you.

    1. Re: Has anyone know how rare a Yamaha G - 231 is?
      Greg

I don’t about rare but it’s a shame someone would have thrown it out. I’ve had one since 1983 and love it. I keep thinking it’s time to upgrade, but every time I visit a music store to search for a new CG I end up back with my g231 and feeling as though it sounds better and plays better then guiters 10x as much.

    2. Re: Has anyone know how rare a Yamaha G - 231 is?

: I found one in the the trash. Some guy was getting rid of it so I picked it up and checked on ebay and found out its worth $89.00 it sold for on there. I was woundering if anyone knew anything about it.

well they are not rare at all but they do sell new for about $150-$200. You could have sold it used for more than $89.

If you read the message properly, you would of noticed the guy didn’t sell his for $89, but someone on EBAY did. Just wanted to know what its worth. $150-200 sounds about right.

Again- I don’t know if it’s rare… it matters more how well it’s been taken care of the sound is, etc. I have a 30 year old g231 and LOVE IT. The action is a little high… but all in all I wouldn’t trade it

          ickoy

i just bought a g231 recently.. how much? $20 worth of cuban rhum.. not bad for a 3rdhand guitar huh? that is, including the hardcase (with soft velvet interior).. will i sell it to anyone? NO WAY!! its a guitar worth keeping.. 🙂 cheers!

      1. just got one Aug 2019
        Peter

I just bought one at a thrift shop auction, $60.00 Canadian, which I guess would be about $45.00 U.S.? It’s nice. D string buzzes a bit and I haven’t changed the strings, but it sounds quite nice. Think I will try to lower the action and change the strings.

      2. I picked mine up at a 2nd hand music store in the 90s and leave it at camp all winter and stuff but it still sounds and playes better then my more expensive and newer fender classical. I payed $240 for it then, I guess I didn’t get as good a deal as others but I love it.

      3. 1984 G-231 ii
        Deon CleanCutt

I bought mines in 1984 when in college. I am a professional player. I simply love this guitar. Over the years I thought about selling it but for the sound, the money (I bought it for 99 dollars) and how it feels, I would never sell it. I have recorded with it. I have done concerts with it. The sound and intonation is superb !!! As you can see, I don’t judge guitars by the price tag.

      4. Yamaha G-231
        GregL

I didn’t know much about guitars when I bought mine 15 years ago but I have been very happy with it ever since. I learned how to play on it, change my own strings and how to tune by ear along the way so I cannot complain. I won’t sell mine. I spent $160 to buy it in a guitar shop.

      5. G231
        Richard Komassa

Well I just bought one at a Pawn shop in gallup, New Mexico for a great price. It had been sitting a few years. It’s only my second guitar, but I liked the price and needed a travel one. In looking at it, I see the Bass strings are Metal and the upper 3 are Nylon. How come? I need to replace the d string asap.

        thanks!

        Japh

      6. I’ve got several high end guitars but the one I play most is my old G 231 it’s so easy to fret and it sounds as one post read so mellow I love it

      7. Yamaha G-231
        Nancy T

I bought mine new in 1979 and I have had no desire to upgrade. The sound is so mellow. I took a great guitar player with me when I picked it out and he highly praised the sound that came out of it back then. It hasn’t changed. I have added the Dean Markley Acoustic Guitar Pickup to it for additional fun in the electric realm!

I, too have a Richter instrument, however, it is a ukelele (I believe) with an old paper label of the Duncan Sister’s (Vaudeville team from the 1920s). It reads "Cicero Blues" on the neck of the guitar and Richter of Chicago on the back. Like Brad I would like to know more about the company, the age of the instrument, and anything else anyone might know. Thank you.

      2. Dauphin Model 30
        David Hirsch

I have a 1985 Dauphin Model 30 classical guitar for sale. This is one of the highly acclaimed student guitars made in Japan.
I am the original owner. I purchased it from my teacher at Peabody Conservatory. I picked it out from several guitars that he had.
This sounded the best with a distinctive Spanish sound! The top is cedar, back and sides are rosewood.
The top has a couple of dings on it – typical of normal playing wear. I recently had Danche Ivanovic (Danche guitars) put on new Gotoh tuners,
a tap plate to protect the top, a new bone saddle and nut, and a 7th position MOP fret marker.
In addition, the action was lowered a bit to make it even more comfortable to play!
The sound has never been better!!! It is a phenomenal student guitar with a wonderful sound and color palette plus very good sustain..
Included is a upgraded quality TKL hardshell case.

        joey

I have an old Richter in great playable shape’ I thought it was 1930s but inside I found a stamp marked Richter 821. I’ve read this is how they were dated and not serial numbered. Is that true? Does anyone have info on the Richter company or this guitar. I’d never sell it but I can’t help and wonder its value. I paid only 40 dollars today for it, and I have to imagine if it is 1921 then it at least qualified around 250 since its not rosewood or high end. Any if info helps’ Joey

      2. Richter Mfg. Co.
        Anonymous

From The Music Trade Review The Richter Mfg. Co. was formed sometime before 1920 and was producing guitars and other stringed instruments from 1923 and possibly earlier. It was founded by Charles Richter and at his death in 1920 was run by his son Carl. Their factory was located at 2532 Irving Park Boulevard, Chicago.

Their initial success in the 1920’s was with the ‘Sweetheart’ brand of Ukulele. The 1930’s seemed to be busy years for the Richter company, selling through they own brand and through distributors. They also had an arrangement with Montgomery Ward, who sold Richter guitars through the mail order system. I could not find the reason however Richter ceased trading in 1943 or 1944.

Most of their guitars are of medium quality all birch body instruments with a rounded chunky, yet comfortable neck. A lot of, but not all, Richter branded guitars have the distinctive ‘gumby’ style headstock with the small paper ‘Richter’ label in a script font on the front of the headstock and ‘RICHTER MFG. CO. CHICAGO, ILL.’ impressed into the wood on the back. They also usually have the word ‘RICHTER’ stamped in ink onto a thin piece of wood that is glued (sometimes haphazardly) to the heel plate on the inside of the guitar. On this heel plate can also be stamped the manufacture date or a serial number. Guitars that carry a distributors brand such as B & J Serenader still have this stamp inside the guitar.

Richter made some cowboy stencil guitars that were sold by Montgomery Ward, ‘The Plainsman’ from 1938-1941, ‘Home on the Range’ from 1938-1939, ‘Red Foley in 1940 and ‘Corral/Rodeo Scene, also in 1940. Richter also made two Hawaiian stencil guitars that I know of.

Values of a Richter guitar in good condition tend to be $200-$300 on ebay but much less with any damage.

I was just given a Richter Guitar by my grandfather that his brother played in the early to late 30’s and I would like to know how much it is worth too. If I can find anything I will post it here for you.

I have a Richter guitar and the name and date of mfg is posted inside the body at the base of the neck. Take a small mirror and flashlight and you can see it. Mine is dated Nov 1937 with a #5 stamped inside the body. Some guitars have this stamped inside the body.

I have an old Richter Guitar that is really old and has inside of it the stamp that it was made in 1929. It is in it’s original shape and has several flower like decals on the sides of the front and on the bottom front. It still has all of the original pegs in it, but is missing the front
string/nut holder. The tuning keys are working properly and are very tiny in size. It is a double opening front, double tuner, peg type and the pegs are made of Brass. It has a small hairline crack in the lower front of it of about 4 inches long that could easily be repaired and the outside of the guitar is all sturdy, but needs to be refinished if someone wanted to make it NEW LOOKING. The Fret Board is in good shape also. It was from someone in my family for years and got handed down to me, since I play the guitar. Does anyone know what it would be worth? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Malcolm Cotton, [email protected].
