It depends on how good you want it to look. Any idiot can simply buy a $5 can of spray paint of Wal-Mart, and do a brain dead half assed job. But here’s an easy way to repaint
a solid-body electric guitar and make it look good. Keep in mind, that this IS NOT a pro-finish, but it stills looks damn good. I’ve only done this to polyurethane finished guitars, so if you’ve got a good guitar leave it to the pros.

There are two ways to prep a guitar before you touch any sandpaper, or paint. The easy way is to mask ALL of the parts that you don’t want to paint. But I would HIGHLY recommend removing the body, and the hardware so that you’re left with simply a body. If only recommend this if you know how to set-up electric guitars from scratch. You might ruin the guitar by doing this if you don’t know what you’re doing. However, I would highly recommend getting the guitar set-up at the dealer after the paint job. It’ll cost you, but why repaint a guitar if it plays like crap.

First, using fine paper, sandpaper off the existing a far bit. Not too much, you don’t want to sand the body. Or skip and

Now prime the body using primer (duh). Use a primer that matches the colour of the finally finish you desire. If you’re going with pastel or surf colours, prime with white.
One or two coats will do.

Once that body has dried, it’s time to mix your paint, or select your spray paint. Now, I don’t recommend spray paint. What I do recommend, is one of those fence painting compressed air devices. Spray paint has a tendency to deal out uneven coats. Plus, you can mix your own custom colour, and spray it on. I won’t HIGHLY recommend hanging up the guitar before spray it. This will promote an even finish.

Apply three to four coats of paint. Let the guitar dry for a few days. Not it’s time to seal it to give it that shiney look.

Use polyurethene, or laquere (I use urethene, but some people like laq). I recommend spraying it on once again, but you can brush it on as well. I’ve never worked with laq before, so from here on the instructions are for urethaning.

You can get urethane in spray form, this is very handy and I recommend it. But if you wanna brush it one, that’s fine as well. Apply one coat, let it dry for a day or two. Then sand it a bit using fine paper, and apply another coat. Repeat the last step one or two more times before applying a final coat.

If you really want a nice shine, use Megulairs showroom car polish and BUFF THAT SUCKER.

try using a wet towel(paper)and a hot soldering pencil(40 watt) the wet towel and hot soldering iron will combine to make steam. if the dent isn’t too huge this should introduce enough moisture into the wood to suck the dent out. place the wet towel into the dent and hold the iron ontop of the towel. be careful not to touch any exposed wood with the iron, you don’t want to burn the wood.

an easier way to strip the body isn’t to sand. the best, easiest and safest way iz to use nitromors. u paint this onto the body with itz paint still on and give it 20 minutes and the paint begins to fall of and turn to jelly. u just scrap it off using a knife making sure u don’t do it too hard and scratch the wood. piss easy ya see

What ya’ll saying is all well and good ——the way your doing it is also fine. but , remember this.
poly will turn yellow with age. and if you are using this instrument in general population consider
the enviroment——when I refinished my guitar I thinned the poly down to a 2to 1 ratio with thinner
Granted the tendecies for it to run are there so you must back way off on the gun. I mean distance .
you don’t spray at 10–12 inches. you spray at 18 inches to a foot. several coats sanding with
0000 steel wool between each coat will give you a much better shine —–and the tonal qualties will
        be greatly enhanched

That all is very helpful, but I’m looking to repaint an Acoustic guitar though. Is the steps basically the same for acoustic, or completely different. Any help would be very useful.
