I changed the tuning pegs, but kept the originals. I was wondering what it might be worth. It’s finish is "crackled" and it is not in mint condition as I’ve used it, but it looks fine and I’d say it’s in good condition…nothing broken or cracked. The label on the inside is #878485. Does any one of you fine Gibson owners know when they changed from round to square shoulders on the J-45?.
Gibson told me it was ’69.
A music store selling a ’68 on e bay says it was ’68.
Does anyone really know?.
I’m getting frustrated trying to find out for sure!.
Thanks Ray

Hi Skip,
I just read your post. Hope you didn’t trade. The NV-12 is rare, and a wonderful 12 string. Solid mahogany back and sides, solid spruce top, great workmanship. I talked to Gibson about this guitar (I own one too), and he had high praise for this guitar. Parts made by Japanese quality craftmanship, sent to Gibson for assemble and finish work. Hang onto it if you still have it, you can’t get such wonderful tone in an inexpensive guitar nowadays!
I did sell a mint Gibson Nouveau mandolin–probably too cheap. Compared to what is available, it is wonderful time 100. If you find one for a reasonable price, buy it.

This popular thread has been given its own page : Re: Gibson Nouveau
I just bought a Gibson 12 string NV-12 Nouveau at a estate sale with a hard case in Exellent condition for $325.00. I love how it sounds and plays.
Gibson introduced a line of flat top guitars under the Nouveau by Gibson brand in
1986. Nouveau bodies and necks were made in Japan and then shipped unassembled to the
U.S. where they were then assembled and finished. Electric models joined the line in 1987.
Gibson moved the Nouveaus to the Epiphone line, under the brand Nouveau by Epiphone,
by September 1987. Electrics were moved to Epiphone by February 1988. the entire
Nouveau line was discontinued by early 1989.
If anyone is looking for one or has any info. please contact me at:

Chris, I just received a response from Epiphone…I have the same guitar sn# 170803 and I had similar questions about my nv 245. Roger Ball at Epiphone informed me that it is a Nova 245…he even sent me an old advertisement from the 70’s that went into the details of the guitar’s construction. If you’d like, send me an e-mail address and I’ll send you the ad. He believed mine was made sometime around 1977 (and my serial # is much lower than your’s) so your’s was most likely manufactured post ’77. Here’s some info that I found out about this guitar. Not much is known about the Nova (NV series or "Nouveau") series of guitars produced by Gibson Epiphone. This series of guitars was produced after the Gibson company was taken over by Norlin and after a few years of making reissues of original Gibson instruments, Norlin decided to make a name for itself and prove it could produce a line of acoustics all by itself. So it called in the top designers and luthiers and eventually the Nova was born. No expence was spared in the design and manufacture of these guitars and top Japanese luthiers were employed to make sure this line would beat all the older Epiphone’s. The guitars were introduced in the 70’s with a lot of press coverage and Norlin proudly displayed their own name on the label. There were 6 strings, archtop 12 strings, & flattop 12 strings, each with varying degrees of build quality and finish. The only problem was that very quickly it was seen that these guitars were too expensive to produce and the competition was so fierce that they could’nt compete with all the cheaper guitars coming out of Japan at that time. The public just weren’t paying the high prices being asked for them, despite very good reviews from the music press. It wasn’t long before the NV range faded away and was forgotten by all but the owners of these wonderful guitars.
Hope this helps,
Clint

I have just bought a Epiphone no 295 guitar and it sounds very similar to the one you are describing, very large body, oval sound hole that sort of thing, did you find any info out?I have pics of this if you want to view it.

i had a 12string Epiphone/Norlin that i bought new in 1978 called a Nova FT165 (FT indicated flat top and 165 indicated rosewood back/sides)with an elliptical soundhole and pickguard/bridge design that was nice. it was stolen from my home and my insurance replaced it with a perfect twin which i played for another ten years until i sold it. i have wished many times i had one again, but i now play a very nice Guild F512 and i am satisfied with that. i consider the Epiphones very good quality for the money even with the laminates used in construction. enjoy…

Hello:
I have a Gibson Nouveau F-5 style mandolin, made in 1986. Gibson denies any knowledge of how many were made, it has a Cremona Brown Varnish finish, bound fingerboard, excellent tone. I acquired from 2nd owner, he and the first never played it…so it is a 17 year old new mandolin…the neck is 3-ply…nice flame…any idea on its worth and rarity? Gibson bought Flatiron and evidently didn’t do much with the Nouveau line.
I too have one of these guitars and have no info nor can I find any info on it. If anyone has anything at all on the price, production, year or websites pertaining to this instrument would u please e-mail me. S# beings 171@#$ if that helps. Thank you.
I to have one of these guitars in excellent condition but know nothing about it nor can I find any info on it. If anyone has any info on this guitar would u please e-mail me. S# 171@#$ if that helps. Thank you.
I also have a Nouveau by Gibson Mandolin. In excellent condition. Some say epiphone on the headstock . Mine says Nouveau by Gibson. Does anyone know the difference between the two ? I am looking to sell mine if anyone is interested .
If you still have the mandolin I have a interest.
I want to know about my guitar. It’s similar to the one you are describing, very large body, oval sound hole that sort of thing. The serial numbers are much lower than the other viewer. How much are this guitars being sold for?
Did you ever find out the going asking price for your Epi Nova? I have one, too, that I want to sell, but haven’t a clue as to what it’s worth.

: How many were produced? (Other versions have round shoulders unlike the J45 Deluxe with square shoulders.
: What would be the approximate value in excellent condition?
Hi, I own a 69 Square Shoulder J45 Deluxe. Now the bad news. For no good reason, other than snobbery, the square shoulder J45s are not considered as collectable as the old "Robert Johnson" round shape. The tone and playability are, in my humble opinion, directly comparable and even warmer in the bass and mid tone region. Your Guitar is probably only worth about $1000 even if mint. I would never sell mine as I have had it since new and its been through a lot with me! Regards, Ken

Factory order number Y 6297 14 inside guitar on neck block. Replaced tuners, bridge and pickguard. Top and sides and neck are crack free and in excellent plus condition. Back has one long crack that runs the length of lower back bout, one three inch crack just above that one and some crack damage between these two cracks (see photo). There was a screw placed on the heel that goes through the neck block inside. There appears to be some lacquer cracking or possible a stress hair line just below this screw that run across the heel. The screw must have been covered somehow. Both areas are only noticed upon very close examination. The nut and saddle do not look original. End pin is missing and the hole there looks a larger than normal however not large enough for a input jack? The neck is almost perfect and the action is very low with no buzzing. The guitar is very loud and sounds great!! Soft shell case. small crack on the back It is about 1 1/2 " long and seems to be a continuation of the longer crack. This one does not show on the inside. All the cracks have been glued no cleats were used. i i will include a set of single line 3 on a strip klusons with the guitar, however one button is pretty much gone and another is not to good. please email with question and more pics.

I have a J25, and I love it, obviously condition has a great deal to do with the price, but if its in good shape you probably talking about $600-$700. I’ve had to replace the tuning pegs on mine and have read about others with the same problem. Its not a real common gibson, I blieve they only made them one or two years, 82-83. It didn’t sell to well, but since the fiberglass backs have become much more popular.

Price Paid: US $329.99
Purchased from: N/A
Mid-west Exchange Pawn Shop
Features: 9
This beauty was born in the USA in 1987. Its got a solid body of Alder according to Gibson and a bolt on neck. The three pick up configuration is stacked humbuckers in neck and middle position and a "regular???" humbucker in the bridge position. There are switches to select pick ups, one volume knob and one tone knob. The volume knob has some sort of switch so when you push it down you get a little more oomph (pardon my overly technical description). This one has a very glossy red finish that is holding up remarkably for an axe that is 15 years old.
It has all black hardware that consists of Grover (?) tuners and a Floyd Rose trem. The trem has bridge fine adjustment tuners and a locking nut is installed as well. This one (like all I’ve seen/read about) has an ebony fingerboard that is just gorgeous! Icing on the cake is the great Gibson case that came with this.
Sound: 10
My guitar playing is definitely coming from a rock n’ roll foundation. This guitar fits the bill perfectly. You can really dial in a number of different sounds by selecting different pick-up combinations and manipulating the tone (which has a VERY wide sonic band). I’m sure that if I had more competancy on this instrument I would be able to unlock even more of a variety of sounds. Now, this guitar does not have a "Gibson-ish" sound anywhere on it. Perhaps that’s why it didn’t do well in the market place.
Action, Fit, & Finish: 9
The action on this guitar is dreamy! The strings feel like melted butter. The downside to this is that I have to be real careful NOT to bend strings when I don’t want to.
There are no apparent flaws that really make any difference but the bolt plate on the back of the neck is almost completely devoid of its finish. I’ve noticed this on several other Gibsons w/bolt on necks as well.
The electronics are quiet as a mouse… quieter even, but I don’t believe that this has been played all that much before I got a year ago.
Reliability/Durability: 8
This guitar is a rock solid machine. I’m a klutz and I’ve bumped into a lot of things while wearing this around the house ( I practice using a Lil Smokey that I put in my pocket and then walk around). I haven’t yet chipped the finish and after 15 years theres no cracking what-so-ever. On this, as all my guitars, I replaced the strap buttons with locking ones. I’m fairly sure the factory ones were good, but I’m a klutz… you do the math.
I’d use this guitar playing a gig without even thinking about it. The only reason I’d need a back up is in the case a string broke.
Customer Support: 7
See the other reviews on this model. I guess I got a bit more of a response from Gibson when I asked about this, but not much. As I bought it used from a pawn shop the warranty issue is n/a. But I will say that anytime I’ve spoken to anyone at Gibson, they were as helpful as one could expect. But I’d still like more company information on this model.
Overall Rating: 9
I’ve now been playing for just a bit over a year. I got into playing guitar because I’ve drummed for over 25 years and couldn’t find guitarists that were willing (or capable???) of speaking drummer. Well I got bit by the bug pretty well and have started buying pretty much anything I think is cool that I can scrape up the cash for. The only thing I don’t like about this guitar is the body style. I’ve always thought that the Strat style was a bit too generic. What slays me most is that for years and years I’ve loved the look of the SG! Angus plays an SG, Zappa has played them… so I got one, a nice one at that. This WRC plays much better and has a wider range of sounds. I kind of hate that but it’s a fact. Isn’t that petty of me?
If you see one of these out there, you should check it out. They’re completely under-valued in the market place from what I’ve seen. It’s a fine instrument that will rival anything else your local music store can peddle to you.

1987 Gibson WRC. 1 Bridge Tapped/Split Coil Humbucker, and Two stacked hums for rhythm and neck. 3 toggle switches for p/u on and off for multiple pickup combo’s.
Strat Style body with a Jackson’ish headstock. Floyd Rose Pt Trem, bridge tuners, and locknuts on headstock. Grover Tuning machines. Body seems to be Ash, Ebony fret board and maple neck. Solid black gloss finish everywhere but neck, with WRC and Gibson on the Headstock in Gold Script.
Hand-Made by a joint venture between Wayne Charvel and Gibson in their Nashville TN plant. Cannot get any information from Gibson on the release of this guitar…
Sound: 10
The sound from this axe is phenomenal, I have played Jazz, Blues, Folk-Rock, and Metal. The variety of the pickup combinations and their tone is very versatile. Very little hum or noise. The neck pickup creates a thick bluesy (SRV ish)tone, while the split bridge humbucker can go from a thick creamy crunch to a strat scream with a click of the push/push volume pot.
I play through a 1969 Fender Twin Reverb (silver face) and a 1981 Crate G-212.
Action, Fit, & Finish: 8
The action was low and clean. Overall the guitar was set up well except for the Tremolo Well. There was a large amount of paint overspray that caused the trem to rub inside the guitar body. Taking a scalpel I removed some of the overflowed paint on the inside and a 1/64 inch of wood in the corner and no problems.
Reliability/Durability: 7
It is now May 2001 and I have been playing on it since 1987… It currently needs some fretwork (couple of rubdowns), the 1/4 cord jack is loose, and the push push vol control no longer switches. The guitar is certainly playable now, but the noisy jack prevents any recording.
This is excellent condition in my mind for a 15 year old guitar.

This is the black-sheep guitar that knowbody wants to admit exsists.
So they say, Wayne Charvel in 1987 was sub-contracted? by Gibson to design some "Custom" gitars. The WRC was so Good! that it really Pissed JACKSON OFF and there was imediate legal chatter. This one ,I think a show special, has a AAAquilted maple top, white binding front and back, binding up the neck and around the headstock, alder body with maple neck, rosewood fretboard, and NO tremelo. It has a three pick-up configuration and three pick-up on-off switches, for any combination of sounds. One humbucker and two single coils.
Sound: 10
This guitar has balls of sounds, smooth and bitey at the same time, with a fixed neck it has plenty of Les Paul style sustain. With the three pick ups you can get five or six types of pick up combinations.
Action, Fit, & Finish: 10
This guitar is meticulously set up with the best of Gibson And Charvel rolled into one. Charvel fans would freak at the beauty, tone and dream of a neck that this guitar has!
Reliability/Durability: 10
I’ve used this live and in the studio, people marvel at the beauty of the finish and for a fourteen year old guitar it’s perfectly strong and straight>
Customer Support: 1
Gibson does not want to talk about it, I’ve e-mailed them several times and all I get is " beat around bush"
Overall Rating: 10
I played this with a MXR dyna-comp,a George Dennis volume pedal, a boss CE-1. and a tweed 50 watt 1-12 Carvin that flat out kicks ass,dual-channel 2-EL34’s and five 12ax7’s. With the dyna-comp I can sustain a note ,go have a bite, anit still be sustainin’ win I git back!

I have one of the WRC models. It has a letter from Gibson with it, and has the bell cover with WRC in hand writing gold metal pin. It is a 1987, Red, has the brown leather case with red insides, but has no coil tap, just the three mimi switches. Also mine has the Gibson speed knobs not the metal knobs I see on others. I love it, and I know guitars and have own many of the best made. I currently have two vantage Les Pauls, two signature Stratocasters, a 80 fender lead-2, a 1959 Gretsch clipper, and this Gibson WRC. The Gibson holds its own next to any of the others, and is my go to guitar. I would never trade or sale this guitar. Not sure what the pickups are but man do they sound sweet, and the neck is so flat, smooth, and easy to play. best guitar of all super strats.

Do you still have the Nighthawk without the Floyd Rose in Fireburst? If so, let me know. Also, it says Standard/Custom. Can you verify whether it is a Standard or a Custom model? Thanks! – Joe – 314-308-0173
