Does anyone know anything about an electric guitar made in the late 60’s with the brand name "ALEX"? I have one I purchased used in 1970 and assume it was made in the mid to late 60’s.
this guitar has a pearl plate on the back of the headstock with (Reg No 42) on it, Serial#80650084, a very rare guitar according to vintage dealers and an appraiser in Nashville, they haven seen one like it, it was the 42nd one made, i bought it new in 1980, if you know anything about it let me know, it is for sale, asking $5,000 but will negotiate, email me for pictures at [email protected], phome# 606 374 7616
I’ve been all over the Web to identify this one–any ideas? Black solid body, heavy, uneven double cut-out w/ "bat wing" head (like Fender). So far it’s a Crestwood or Wilshire from c.1964. BUT–the headpiece says in pearl inlay script "Epiphone by Gibson tm" The inlays are pearl wedges on rosewood. It has three pick-ups,(black, one is wide like a humbucker), only two knobs (V/T) (black metal) and three small toggle switches, each one operates a pick-up. no pick guard. Tremelo bar is missing and it hooked into a spring-loaded box. The edges of the body have white trim.
If the neck wasn’t unique I’d guess the body was reworked, maybe so, but I’ve never seen the wedge inlay or the name script.

Yes … indeed a mystery. With only 4 models to choose from I think – those 2 plus the Olympic & the "Dwight", yours doesn’t sound quite like any of them, but mostly like a modified Crestwood? Serial # anywhere?
Good luck with it.
Strat Man Dwight
how about the "Dwight" epiphone. I’m very curious about it too. I know peter doherty played on it with the libertines but i don’t know how old is the guitar. That’s an old student model as far as i know. is it easy to find?

This popular thread has been given its own page : Recco guitar
: I was wondering if anyony could tell me where i can get some information on my guitar. My grandfather gave it to me, and it was his father’s before him. It’s a solid body electric and its quite thin. The only clue i have as to it’s make is the word "Recco" printed on the headstock. Ive searched everywhere for keyword "recco" at guitar databases with no luck. If anyone knows anything please email me, thanks.
I have a recco guitar with a red to black finish that I bought from somebody I knew. It doesn’t seem like it’s from the late 60’s, more like the late 50’s, It might be fiberglass with a wood laminate, it has one rickenbacker style neck pickup, and that’s it. I bought it in a completely unaltered state, except for the tuning heads which had been replaced because I thing the D,G, and B string tuners had rusted closed.
I recently ran across a Recco bass on sale in guitar centeres used section on their website. I have owned a similar one for a few months but had no clue as to the make. The style unconfusable. I had no clue of tracing it do to the fact that I literally pulled it out of a wall we smashed down.
It is a late 60’s style hollowbody bass with sunburst paint, two humbuck or double coil puckups, and a volume-pickup-tone pot setup. The paint is pretty shot and I did some sanding to the bridge to make it have a playable action but the electrons completely work however a little statically when in transition.
OK, I will tell you what I know. I got a brand new Recco solid body for my birthday in 1966. It was purchased by my mother at a departments store in suburban Detroit (I picked it out). On the same rack were Teisco Del Rays and Silvertones. It was a short scale neck, with chrome pick guard. Two white block pickups. It was cherry red center fading to black edges. one slide switch & volume & tone knobs for both pickups. I never saw them in any normal music store, and we had several large ones on the area. It was just over $100.
I would be interested in purchasing one if someone would part with it. Don’t expect much money for it… I’d just like to have one again. It certainly won’t replace my SG.
Dennis
Wow my friend just bought one today at the flea market for $8. I can’t find any info anywhere except here.
I have a recco too. its cherry red inside fadeing to black. looks good but i need to fix it up and replace basically everything. i dont know anyone who has one where im from and i wanted to know if its worth the few extra bucks to fix it up or get a new guitar.
i have one exactly like yours cherry red to black don’t know much about them
Made in Japan has a steel reinforced neck. It has a steel plate stamped Made in Japan
Did you guys ever find out about the recco acoustic?
: i have one exactly like yours cherry red to black don’t know much about them …..Ahh, the mystery of the RECCO. I have a late 60’s hollow bodied electric. 3 knobs, 2 pickups, square pearl inlay in some frets. Red "recco" plate tag. Black protector for strumming? Red and black (burst?) I was 10 when a friend bought it for me. I also still have the silver tone amp with tubes and foot pedal stuff. I’m trying to find someone to restore it. Made in Japan on neck reinforcer in back. Dead end search keeps bringing me here..over and over so here’s my addition to the mystery. Sorry, I’m no help!
i have a red hollow body recco guitar. it has no hardware though i wish some one had one of these so they could send me a picture so i could restore it to look like it did originally….i love the way it plays.
I have a red hollow body electric recco. My father gave it to me, he got in somewhere around 1969-70 I think, and i don’t know if it was new or used when he got it.

I have one exactly like it, and it is a beautiful playing as well as looking guitar. I totally disassembled mine to give it a once over. For the record, mine has only two knobs and two slider switches(Older model). Controls are housed on a front loading control plate(very nice for working on electronics on hollowbodies like this. Okay Recco’s were made in Japan. They did make student and intermediate guitars, but also made some higher end copy models. Some play EXTREMELY well others not so well, THEN again if I were to go buy a Big name "F" or "G" name say I would play probably 20 before I found the ONE. Anyway I digress, Fit and finish for the most part on these guitars is good. Neck Pocket and Neck Heel look as though they were made for each other, ZERO gaps or shimming inside, all signs of good work. You have to remember Japanese Craftsmen of this time were just that Craftsmen. They took great pride in their work. The old Japanese guitars were and still are by many, considered substandard, but look at the CBS "F’s". JUNK! Recco’s are getting VERY hard to find, and one’s with the original parts are even harder. Pickups and electronics(Pots and switches) are the EXACT same as those found on the early Kingston Guitars also made in Japan. Kingston’s were made from 1958-1967, so I would say the Recco’s are the same although I have found no hard dates on them. I can tell you one thing I am NOT certain of value, but I do know in the hands of some who can play guitar proficiently you can make some sweet sounds. Feel free to email at [email protected]

I also have a Recco that my grandfather gave me back in the early 90’s. It’s a red hollow body with three knobs (2 tone, 1 volume) 2 pickups (each with a seperate on/off switch) and a wammy bar. It definately looks to be from the 60’s, and I was just wandering if anyone knew the price range this could be sold at. From what I’ve dug up, these things must be pretty rare. No one hardly has one!
Thanks for your help

Cody I traded a man a 20 gau. single shot shotgun for one just like you described at a yardsale. If you find out anything please e-mail me. thanks, TL
I found a recco at a thriftstore for $20. Small solidbody teisco-like with 4 pickups, metal pickguard, and whammy mechanism (although quite different from the whammies you find on teiscos). Of course, the finish was shot, 2 of the tuners had at some point been replaced, the bridge was trashed — but the electronics work (although quite microphonic). A fun project!

The Interview with "Children" about their RECCO is now at this WWWeb Address:

I bought a bass second hand and all I know about it is that it says "Recco" on the headstock. I just want to know if I got screwed out of $80 for this thing.
I am amazed that someone else has an unidentfiable "RECCO"! We are trying to find another seven just like the one in one of our houses, but are yet unable to define it’s specific origin. Please email us your email address and any info you find and we will be more than happy to send any information that we gather up. So far the trail seems to lead more toward Greece or Italy rather than to Mexico or Brasil as had first thought. [email protected]

Special guitar brand or what!
i just bought a recco hollowbody. any more info on them?
i am greek, so if they are from greece that would be cool.
Recco was a music company from Japan in the late 60’s/early 70’s with a distribution office in the US. they made beginner/student guitars and tube & solid state combo amps. that’s all i know.
Hi Wes,
I was wondering if you had any luck? I have an acoustic left handed guitar with the only clue on it’s origin being Recco as well. I know that doesn’t help you at all, but you aren’t alone out there!!

I have a recco model T154 and would like to know the cost and year. God Bless
My husband and I have just bought several instruments from a musician’s estate. One of them is a red, Recco hollow-body electric guitar. Evidently the old gentleman played a lot of jazz music with the biggies around Detroit back in his day. If the guitar was made in the early 60’s as mentioned here, then the guitar is still in pretty good condition. If there was a whammy, it is missing now though. It is possibly one of the older ones with two pickups and two switches, tone and volume knob. It will be going on eBay soon. Anyone know anything about value? [email protected]

I’m buying a Recco Dreadnought type Mod No. RA-154 from a gal I met recently. It’s in better than fair shape and I have high hopes for it. I’m in the process of doing a hard search on any info I might may gather. I’d appreciate any help and will post any significant findings I make
for all to use in their journey. I’m paying $60.00 for it and that seems fair. I’m beginning my search today, and from the sound’s I’m hearing
I’m already wishing myself “Good Luck”. Youall know more when I know more.
Ciao!
My first bass was a solid body Recco my parent bought for $35 from Treasure Island dept store in Atlanta in 1969. I learned to play along with my 45s while laid up in a body cast after a dirtbike accident. I installed a fuzz pedal into it complete with the footswitch and battery. Still have the bass, but havent played it in 45 years. After reading these posts, I’m goint to go dig it out and see how it plays.
That is cool! My first electric guitar was a Recco bass my parents bought me around 68/69 from Treasurer Island in Madison Wi. The brown sunburst and if I remember it was a single pickup. I sold it along with all my other guitars years later but I sure wish I would have kept it along with a Univoc 6 string I had.
I have a recco guitar acutually recently was given to me by a close friend… But really no need for it was just wanting to sell it to someone who could actually put it to somegood use if not it’ll just collect dust.. But if interested you can email me at my address [email protected]..
Model RA-154 acoustic purchased at a hard sale this AM…Can’t find any info about it either. Has amazing sound!!!
Hello, My name is Don and I also have a Recco Model Ra-154 and was hoping you found some information on it. I searched the web pretty much everywhere and I cannot find the guitar. my email is [email protected] if
Just bought a Recco classical for twenty bucks.A college girl.A beautiful girl, not the guitar.I am retired and she will be the perfect learning experience for me!Warm her up!Grind her down all the way!Strip her NAKED!Stain and refinish in satin! The guitar is a project in need! The college girl?A dream indeed!
I recently started playing bass again
after several years. My wife had a Recco bass
that belonged to her grandfather who
passed away in the 90’s. I tried it out
through my old Peavey TNT 100 (I bought
new in 1979) and it sounds good. I had
borrowed a Scheckter (sp?) and I actually
like the sound of the Recco better. I
may hang on to this one and play it
a while.
I got a 1952 recco jazz gutiar, it’s(she) sunburst with a wood pick guard, and, though I had to repace the mechines
with Grovers it purrs like a kitten! nick-named Jazzy, I recived her on christmas eve 2013, and she’s the best guitar, that i own! out of 19! in case your’e wondering why,I kept on this misson, I would like to know if it is rare? the frets, are slightly fanned, the tag in side the f-hole says recco japan and her serial number is 60,dose this make it (her) early?
thanks Ttoko.
Does anyone have a brown sunburst solid body they would like to sell?
Did you find your guitar? I just come across a recco acoustic
I just bought an unnamed classical through e-Bay for $30 and may have identified it as a Recco as the curvature of the fingerboard above the sound hole matches a Recco currently being offered on e-Bay (5/4/12). I repair/rebuild old acoustics as a sideline and was absolutely blown away by the sound of this guitar. With medium/hard tension cheap strings, it has excellent sustain (particularly good in the upper register) without metallic overtones in the bass and the overall balance is quite good. The bass has the deep resonant tone similar to my Goya G-20, but out performs the G-20 in the upper register and has a more bell like quality in the mid-range. All in all, I am completely amazed at the sound and ease of play of this $30 beater, and it is highly unlikely I will ever sell it.
My first guitar was a Recco hollow body strung with steel strings. I received it in 1969 when I was 11 years old. I played it exclusively until I was 14 when I got a 12 string. I restrung the Recco with nylon and used it for my classical lessons until I got a proper classical guitar. I sold the guitar at a garage sale in 2000 for about $15 and ironically, it had been purchased at a discount store in the 60’s in Madison, WI called “Treasure Island” for $15! (The store was a division of JCPenney, I believe and similar to WalMart in its day.)
I am looking for a hollow body Recco to hang on the wall with some other guitars. If you come across one, please email me at [email protected]. Thanks.
That’s cool. My first electric was a Recco bass which came from Treasure Island in Madison around 68/69.
I have listed this mystery guitar on eBay, the auction is about to end – please look and let me know if you have any idea what it is!!! Cheers, d.
Have a mystery amp here, goto http://gypsyrow.tripod.com for pictures of it, any one know anything about it, I would be ever so thankful

good forum, really
Has anyone with a similar amplifer found a schematic yet? If you have had success with the repair of your amp perhaps you could post the correct voltages on the pins of the EL34’s.
i am revising an elk echo amp currently.
i would reccommend to avoid the EL34 tube here. the heaters will draw too much current. the heater-winding can only
provide 4.5 A. it says so on the x-former itself.
what you get is 4 x 300 + 1 x 600 = 1800 ma for the pre-amp and driver tubes.
EL34 heater current is 1500mA per tube, giving 3000mA.
1800 + 3000 = 4800 mA
6L6 heater current is 900 mA per tube, giving 1800 mA.
1800 + 1800 = 3600, safe margin for the 4.5 A thetransformer can supply.
plus i’d like to mention that in the dr tube schematic, the first filter cap is 100 uF. it is not an original value (marked by a "*"). the rectifier tube cannot handle that capacity in the first cap.
the driver tube is in my opinion a 6CG7, because of the heater wiring. 4 is heater one, and 5 is heater two. 9 is not connected. on an average preamp tube, like a 12AX7 or ECC83, this is not done as you know. with those tubes, heater one is pins 4 + 5, and heater two is pin 9. but, i may miss out something here cos in the dr.tube schematic it looks like it is wired different but it still says it’s an ECC83.
i’ll let you know when i get it up and running.
i’ll measure it for the 6L6 tubes.
later,
eric
At http://www.drtube.com there is aschematic for an elk twin amp 50 available, but i think its nearly similar to an elk twin amp 60.

Hi guys,
I have an HS Anderson bass, 4 string, very heavy and only seen once more in my life an other one of it. I too can’t find information about it, except that it was made by Morris in the late ’70s. Currently I’m defretting it, hence I search around for pictures and info. The pickups sound really bad (I’m more a funk/jazz player than rock/pop) to me so those two single coils I will replace as well in the near future.
greets,

I bought my H S Anderson bass in Sydney Australia around 1978 and it is very heavy but looks quite good in a dark chocolate colour. I know nothing about them. Are they worth much?

i bought my h.s. anderson bask bass(bb-1) in japan, where i live, and i love it! i purchased mine for about $600 about three years ago.
I’ve got an ES 336 clone by HS Anderson, bought it in ’86 (!) in the local music shop in Breda, Netherlands. I love this guitar, the way it sounds and looks, of course it’s so familiar by now.
I don’t know nothing about it, it’s from Japan and that’s all. Never seen any other HS Anderson guitars except from the internet.
I just bought a HS Anderson B1 bass from 1973
in L.A.
I know there is one more bass in the Netherlands
from HS Anderson (a guy from Breda)
Are there any Belgium guys who own one ?
: Well, i just got H.S.Anderson Bask bassII from my friend.
: It’s a P bass style with mint condition frame ash body and maple fret board. i saw "M.Shinoda 76-31-03" signed on neck at bolt joint and pickup slot position.
: sound is too more punch than P-bass 78′
: did anyone have more detail for this brand? Thx
: hi…all, i just got back ground of H.S.Anderson, H.S.Anderson’s meen is Hidesato Siino’s under son.
for more detail
pls see http://sammy11.blog.so-net.ne.jp/2009-09-12
thanks sammy11 for reference
I’ve bought a BB-1 bass about 15 years ago from a guy in Groningen. A friend of mine has one too (he recently got it from his sister who lives in………… Breda)
It’s a nice, heavy bass and I’m very happy it’s mine
My H S Anderson bass has a nice rich tone and other than being a bit heavy plays really well. E-mail me with your thoughts.
Hello I would like to buy this Bass. Please contact me. [email protected] I will pay full price plus shipping. I really want this PLEASE! I can Pay now.
:Hey,
I got one as well, medium scale double cut away, look a bit like an alembic. Sure is heavy, but comfortable to wear & play, I’ve only seen one before mine, in a musicstore in copenhagen. The pickups really suck, I’ve tried a P-bass pickup on it , it sounds p-baasy, but with a different kind of "hollowness" if you get it. A bit difficult to get throught in the mix, so I put a Dimarzio model one on it, but I haven’t had the time to explore it. Sounds promosing though…
take care,Timo Lundgren, Sweden
I would like information about and how much my guitar is worth it looks like one of the new line6 guitars (variax) you know the double cut body it has a pick gard close to a Gidson SG its pickup setup is a two mini humbucker. If you could e-mail me some info it would greatly appreciated.
: I have an HS-1 and I learned it was made in Japan custom by Vestax. They are rare collectables, Prince has some and are hard to find information on since so few were made. They are worth what someone will pay and are not listed in any reference book. Great rare guitars.
I have an HS Anderson guitar. Behind the headstock it’s written : "Hs Anderson – PART II by MORRIS"
On the neck (through body) before the last fret, there is an insert of pearl where are stamped the letter : HS 0S-2.
And on the last fret a date is stamped : 03.06.80
The logo on the front of the head is the same you can see on this guitar : http://www2.gol.com/users/maki/guitar/hs.JPG
What’s look like your HS-1 ?
i also have one but it’s a HS-A2. Can’t see Morris anywhere but back of headstock has 2 rows of numbers- 206791 then 214
i live in Australia the guy i got it of is quite knowleadgeable and says they’re Australian made (which contradicts previous repliers).this guitar was supposedly owned by Aussie muso John Swan (swanee) the half -brother of more famous Jimmy barnes of Cold Chisel fame. this is likely as the friend i bought it from lived in same location as both these guys. this has EMG pickups and sounds great, especially for that classic Santana sound (and i’m comparing it to a ’63 strat and a Les Paul Signature Recording guitar against both of which it loses nothing.)Seems standard pickups not so good. Also can concur that is very heavy guitar weightwise.
i live in the philippines, i have h.s anderson houton guitar, i’m planning to sell it, it’s a vintage guitar….
I have a HS A2 aswell, I bought it 78 in Germany. After a long search in the net I found out that it was made in Japan as a high level brand of Morris. Still love the guitar, heavy that’s right but the sound is great.
My dad owns a HS-A2 which he bought in the UK in about 1975, he has fitted DiMazzios and it sounds great. Of course it’s also very heavy but in great nick.
Why doesn’t anybody know much about these guitars? They are most likely Korean but have read many different stories.
would like information about and how much it is worth looks like a flying v or a polymodern v
It was a pleasant surprise to me to find references to the H.S. Anderson bass guitar on internet.
I owned one during the late seventies while living in New Zealand and regrettably sold it when moving back to Holland in 1980. I never forgave myself. It was a beaut bassguitar: heavy (which I like) with a good action. An electronics-friend had rewired the pick-ups to (somewhat) the sound of a Fender Jazzbass. Using nylon-wound strings and playing through a Rockit bass-amp (solid state) with 1 x 15″ EV and 1 x 15″ JBL bins, using heaps of bass + treble and very little mid-tones, it was the nicest bass I’ve played on.
Missing her like hell!
Gidday John
I bought that bass from you!
I still have it and play it all the time, so it went to a good home.
Electrics are unchanged but for a new switch (replaced about three years ago). The hard case is pretty beat up now (it has been well travelled ). Currently playing on round wounds through a Markbass amp = match made in heaven 🙂
Cheers
@ John van Prehn:
If you still miss it like hell: I’ve got an H.S. Anderson bass for sale (I live in Holland). It’s old, it looks used, but it still plays and sounds great. I’ve owned it for 20 years and now I’m looking for something different.
Please contact me if you are interested.
Hallo Joost,
Missing it is one thing, but buying another one depends on price and distance I’d have to travel to check it out.
Thing is that I don’t really need it as I already have 2 other basses while I don’t play much these days. So it’s mainly a case of nostalgia.
But I may be interested and would like to hear from you in case the price and whereabouts are acceptable.
If you can enclose a photo it will be appreciated as I wonder if we’re talking about the same model. Mine came out during the mid-seventies and seeing you owned yours for 20 years, I wonder if the model is the same?
Like to hear from you.
John.
Hello,
I have this bass in a good condition. I would sell it for 200 Euro.
Is it an offer for you? Or maybe for another one who is interested.
Tell me!
Best regards
Tom

Hi Tom,
I’m now on this website, and the forum formatting is a bit strange, so i have no idea if this is a forum post or a pm,
but in any case, if that HS anderson bass is still for sale, i would be greatly interested!

Mark – A long time ago I had an Elk amplifier that I bought in Japan. The big tubes [the output tubes] can be el 34. they are just an Military version of 6L6 tubes which were in the original. The small tubes farthest away from the big ones are 12ax7. I cannot remember the two other tubes. One next to the big tubes and the one which drives the tremelo. I am looking for a schematic for the Elk. Do you have one that you could send me a copy. Hope this helps a little bit.

i am revising one myself. the heaters of the EL34 may draw too much heater-current! i calculated that 6L6 or 6V6 pair will be ok. recifier should be a GZ34 or 5U4B.
in the echo-amp, one pre-amp tube is NOT a 12ax7, because the heaters are wired differently.
cheers,
EJ
The tubes should be from behind left to right:GZ34,EL34,EL34
12Ax7,ECC85(that`s th one with the different heater wiring)
and 3x12AX7 or 7025.
Plate voltage at the EL34 is 420V,Bias – 35 V.

The Elk Guitarman amp is essentially a eb202s chasis. I owned one in the late 60s . It is a real nice amp. Don’t use a 6L6. It requires 6CA7 or EL34 power tubes. The rectifier must be a 5AR4. (unless you convert to diodes. Be advised the high voltage may be to high) The other tube is a 6AQ8.

Hey guys thanks for the info. I bought a twin amp 50 but didn’t know which tubes went into which sockets. Thanks to Wolfgang and Eric, I now understand that and why the filaments are wired differently for the ECC85 tube.

The Les Paul KM was made in 79 only. Limited production of 1500 with the majority (like the Heritage series) going to Japan as collectibles. Mine is in Tobacco("natural") burst and looks and plays great! Gotta love the T-Bucker pickups as well. A rare gem!!

I beg to differ…I own a 1980 KM model(cherryburst) that was made in August of that year.I would not be a bit surprised if this KM for sale was made in January ’81.

I am trying to fix one of these amps for the other guitarist in our band, the Vibrato circuit has been modified which has made its channel quiter than the normal channel, the parts of the circuit I have worked out are simular to a Fender Vibralux unforunately the modified bit is different I have not been able to find an Elk circuit diagram or the company, there appears to be a Japanese pharmacutical company with the same name but I do not know if they are related. Have you tried replaceing the preamp valves to reduce the noise? is it on both channels? I will let you know if I find a circuit, good luck with the repairs, cheers …Martin
