: does anyone know haow much a 6 string f390s is going for now a days??
I bought one for $400 in 1982, and have played it ever since. It has a great sound and I also, would like to know what it is worth today? I would hate to replace it but cannot find any info on it except here and on Takamine’s web site. Was this an unpopular model or just not any sellers out there? In my opinion it has a great sound for the money. Mine has gold plated tuners and abalone pearl inlays. If anyone can give me a little info it would be greatly appreciated. By the way Justin I hope you found your info.
I saw your comment about Takamine f 390s. Did you ever buy one? I am looking for one but they are hard to find.
thanks

This popular thread has been given its own page : Info on a late 70s Fender F55-12
I have a Fender F55-12 that my dad passed down to me. It’s still nearly brand new, except for a Fishman we added some years back.
Unfortunately there are no new good Fender acoustics anymore, so the old Japanese and American guitars seem to get a bit of attention these days.
Mine is a ’77 model. You probably know this already, but if it helps, it is usually the first two numbers of the serial number that are the year the guitar was made, except for a few weird ones.
Easily the nicest guitar I have, and ever will have, even after all these years.
Hi, just too let you know, i bought mine, brand new in 1976, in Ottawa, US models
The Fender F55-12 was produces in Asia from 1972-1980 and had a MSRP at that time of $270.00. It sold for about 3/4 of the MSRP price. It has a spruce top and Bubinga back and sides.
hi…My Momma bought this for me for my 16th or 17th birthday..brand new. I have tried to find some info about it, like place of manufacter (it has the cut out ‘V’ at the tip of the headstock, which means, I am told, it is a Japanese model). Itried to date it with the seial number, but no luck (Ithink it’s a 79). Does anyone know where I can find some info on it? I believe it is a 79, or even an 80. That time of my life is a bit blurry. Any help would be appreciated. I sanded the saddle down a bit in the early 80s and learned to play it like a banjo…and it STILL is my favorite guitar in my collection.
The Fender F-55 was the standard model of 12 string in the new Fender acoustic line-up. Most of the Japanese made guitars from that era, especially the acoustics, were a bargain. Their quality was as good as most American guitars costing two or three times as much.
The F-55 was a pretty decent guitar. The head stock got rid of the infamous hockey stick and were less heavy ended on the head, making them much more comfortable to play. The tone was mellow without being muddy. I remember I had trouble keeping the top strings in tune, although that could have been my stringing.
My estimation is any Good F-55 for under $500 is a good price. Over $700 had better be in Very Good condition. However, my opinion and $1.19 gets you a coffee at the corner gas station.
I also have a Fender f55 12 1975 on the inside label. it has no serial number. Where was they built in 75. I have read that the early ones was supreme and built in Japan. This sounds amazing no electric’s fitted , its as naked as the day it was made. I have strung it with lights and its tuned down a couple frets. Not a lot of strain showing on the top but I have owned it from new. Guitars are like babies they need love and care, Right temp and humid they pay you back. Guitar Site Aladdin’s cave nice place to be . Thanks
I just inherited a Dauphin Cadet DE57 that’s never been used. I might want to sell it (it’s too small for me, I think). Can anyone offer any info about this guitar? I don’t have a clue what its worth. Thanks.

I bought a Dauphin Cadet for my daughter back in 1998 as her first guitar. It is half or 3/4 size, I believe it is considered 1/2 size. Its a nice little classical. Its sound is small (to go with its size), but very sweet, a bit lacking on the lower tones. It is the single best moderately priced childs guitar I have ever seen. My daughter has outgrown it, but I won’t part with mine just in case she has a child who wants to play. Small adults and beginning guitarists also love it because it is so easy to play (small size = low tensions, short neck). Please try to find an aspiring serious 6 year old guitarist who can develop on this fine instrument. It was not an expensive guitar. I believe it might have been around $150.00 new.

I have a LYS Acoustic Guitar. Model L (Letter only, No number), Ser.No. 1695, Manufactured in 1980. This guitar plays and looks wonderful. I’m about to change the strings and would like to clean and polish the neck and body while the strings are off. Can anyone suggest a good wax product that would do it justice and what kind of strings would complement this kind of guitar..
I have a LYS L20 from 1982-3. It plays very well and the neck is.so resistant to seasonal change. It is set up so close that any variation in
the neck would buzx.
I only clean the neck during string change. A wax has never been used and the gret board still looks very good for 28 years of heavy playing.
My string choice is the nano web or polyweb light guage.
Bob
They are.so smooth and.hold pitch. They also bring out the low and higher strings better than other brands. My LYS has a veneer body and these strings seem to
capture the best tones for this type of construction.
I am interested in your guitar, but my email to you bounced. If you’re still out there, email me luvfastdogz at yahoo. ca
and maybe we can work something out.

I think this thread might be a bit dated now, but there doesn’t seem to be too much discussion on Lys guitars out there, especially my model. I have a LYS model L3, no. 6334. Does anyone have an idea of the year of manufacture for it, or have you ever seen another?

: The Lys line was an excellent line. There was just one series that could be called a clunker. An experimental glue was used on the L2 series that was great to work with but tended to fail over time. If you have any other Lys you should hold onto it and care for it well. They should reward you with a lifetime of joyful sound.
Thank you for commenting on this LYS site. I have looked for such a site for years. I purchased (traded) my trumpet in Madison Wisconsin in 1982-83 for a L2 veneer body, rose wood neck instrument which has retained it’s quality, sound and fantastic neck action for thirty years. Many in low humidity storage. The serial # is 11433 and retailed for less than 400 USD at the time. Despite the veneer top, it has bright tones when played by pick and mellow tones when played finger style. People who have had the opportunity to play the L2 state it plays like butter because of the quailty of the fret board, neck and ability to retain a tight action. I would by another in a second and seek a more advanced 6 string LYS with a quality solid top.
Thank you for the string of positive comments on other LYS models.
I know this is an old post, but my LYS L-2 serial # is 11432. I have had it from 1984 when my wife bought it for me while we lived in Madison, WI! She told me she thinks she paid about $100 for it and i always thought it was very underpriced for the quality of the guitar.
It’s an old thread, but it’s not dead yet. I just came into a Lys 10, serial #8392, marked Demo on the label, with no year indicated. I’ve seen a number of posts regarding the headstock or neck issue, and mine is no exception, other than that it hasn’t been repaired yet. I don’t play, but have a friend who does, he checked it out, and after I literally forced him to quit playing an hour later, we agreed that even with the headstock issue, it has an incredibly mellow tone… wow. Guess I’ll have to spend a few bucks and get it repaired. It is a beautiful guitar!
Hi,
I don’t have much that much to answer to your question, I just came upon this site while looking for information. I saw the first thread about the price of us dollar 600,- and found that a neath price. I bought mine in the Netherlands some 25 years ago and had to pay the equivalent of ⬠600,-, = 900 USD. 25 years ago, imagine!

20 yrs ago, I had a beautiful LYS 12 string guitar. It had an amazing neck on it. It was my favorite guitar of all time!…unfortunately, it was stolen…by a guy named Derek Mintz..he got run over by his girlfriend so I dont mind naming him…he sold the guitar to someone for drug money probably…anyway…I would love to find another one somewhere….
I found the following on the internet. I have a Lys 12 string I would sell. If interested email- [email protected]
Lys guitars were made in LaPatrie Quebec. They are often described as the first guitars made by Robert Godin who developped the Seagull Guitar. This is incorrect. The Lys was made by Canadian Luthier Norman Butcher who also made the Kamouraska classical guitar. In the last part of 1980 a fire just about destroyed the Shop Butcher was operating and he did not have the financial ability to rebuild so he sold out to Godin, who remamed the Lys "seagull" and the kamouraska the "LaPatrie" Godin then developed the Simon and Patrick the Art&Luthier and the Norman.
It is a good thing that Godin bought the Butchers out since Martin was in the bidding as well hoping to destroy the line by packing it up and shipping it to Korea. All one has to do is remember what Martin did to the Goya when they bought out Levin. The early Goya’s made in Sweden were superior guitars to the Martins, and what Martin did to Goya was just about criminal. I would put a Lys against any vintage Martin out there just as quickly as I would put a new Seagull against any new martin made. None of them would hold a candle to the old Goyas from the 60’s though.
The luthier’s name is Normand Boucher, not Butcher. I have a friend that as a Lys, the sound and playability of this guitar is remarkable, I have a martin D35, a Martin D15 and I would trade the both of them for is Lys.

Hello.
I also have a LYS L3 (No. 9238). I got mine for christmas when I was an exchange student in Montana 1984 (those were the days 🙂 ). It was new then. Sorry to say, thats all the info I have. The make isnt well known over here in Sweden.
I have a LYS Folk-10 that was purchased for me in 1980. It has lasted fabulously well considering that I was 13 years old at the time and I still have it! Plays wonderfully well, I don’t know much about it though. I haven’t found a single reference to it on the internet anywhere. It is serial number 1058
I have a LYS L-15 serial number 1067 which I purchased in Toronto in 1986. The label inside has 1980 on it, which I presume is the year of manufacture. It has been around the world, has held up well and still has a good sound. No details on the manufacturer however other than what has been mentioned already.
I have a Lys 12 string I bought on Ebay a couple years ago. My understanding is that the Lys shop burned down (in quebec) and the Lys guitar plans were bought out by Godin guitars. It is hard to find information. They were known to be very well hand made guitars for a mid range price.
I have recently acquired a LYS guitar, model L 10-12 and the serial# is 8553. It is a great sounding guitar – no idea what it’s worth either but it is certainly well made.
: I have recently acquired a LYS guitar, model L 10-12 and the serial# is 8553. It is a great sounding guitar – no idea what it’s worth either but it is certainly well made.
I also bought a LYS L 10-12 a few years ago at Ebay. It is absolutely great sounding. Much better than my other guitars. But the action (between fret and strings) is very high. One day I will give to a guitar builder to solve this problem.
l bought a lys L18 in Vancouver back in early january 1981, my father knew the owner of the music store and it was priced at $800 Canadian, but l got it for 600 and would never part with it, the action at the lower end was always a bit high but there is a reason for this as l found out to my expense, when l asked a luthier to do a fret job on it for me he decided to lower the action, what a big mistake that was, the lovely treble sound these guitars produce was completely lost and the strings are now buzzing on the first fret, its not a tragedy as l can soon get this sorted out, l also have a martin drednought but they are completely different sounding guitars and both complement each other when played together, back to the Lys, the music store owner knew alot about the guitar and told me it was Normans son that actually started making the Lys guitar, there is a label on the inside of the guitar saying ” l am hand made of solid wood and need 45% humidity” l cant remember the exact serial number but it is in the early thousands, it was definitely made before the fire, also the back of the guitar is made of 3 seperate pieces of which look like mahogony, the outer 2 parts are match booked (this is quite rare to see), also the top sound board is either spruce or maple but it is also in 3 parts with the outer 2 once again being match booked. l live in the UK now but spent many years in good old B.C., if anyone has a lys with this sort of design please let me know l would love to hear from you, if your selling one be very careful as l would not class this instrument as a mid range guitar, as l said before you cant compare it to a Martin as they are two completely different instruments, if you have one like mine and are considering selling it then make your starting bid at a minimum of $2000 Canadian, they are vintage instruments and can never be replaced, any feed back about my Lys would be greatly appreciated but” IT IS NOT FOR SALE” !!! also if anyone is thinking of lowering the action beyond the 7th fret you will not only loose that lovely treble sound that these guitars were built(or at least this particular model was) for but you will also loose the resonation and it sounds as if the strings have been on there for 20 years, so make sure you get a highly recommended luthier who knows about the history of Lys guitars. if anyone out there has a lys guitar remotely similar to mine l really would appreciate some feed back good luck to all of you and remember if it was hand made think carefully before selling it!!!
Hi, your Lys L18 is made out of solid walnut (Bac & sides) and solid spruce (top).
I paid mine 600 back in 1980. I collect Lys guitars if you ever see an L25 let me know…
For yours if you can please share your serial number and some pics…
I collect the Lys instrument but also any data on them, I want to recreate a register of all manufactured Lys…
that I will eventually post on facebook or the Web.

Thanks.

Hi Jerry and everyone,
I just found this forum, it is so difficult to find information about these guitars.
I am about to buy a Lys L20 1980. I just would like to know the specs of this guitar, is it all solid wood?
I have a Seagull Maritime and it has a beautiful sound that is why I got interested on this one.
Thank you very much.
Leo
I bought this guitar second-hand many years ago for my son. He left home and left it behind. It is a LYS L10, 1980, Serial # 1200.
Hi feel free to send me pic if you can…does your son wish to sell it?
Thanks.
Jerry
Hi Jerry; I bought my 12-string serial no. 1285 back in 1980 while attending the university of Guelph…it was my first guitar and I’ve since bought a couple of Seagulls, not knowing the two were ‘father and son’. When I look closely, it appears that the top is solid spruce and the back is spruce veneered ?3-ply. Lovely sound that seems to be improving with age (or I’m getting hard of hearing).
It’s good to hear that that it may be becoming a rare guitar with some increase in value…though cash value means little if there’s never a plan to sell !
Cheers. Mike from Vasey (Ont).
Hi Mike, feel free to send me some pics…Your L-12 sides and back is made out of cherry which looks like maple…
They made Lys out of pruce all around (top, bac and side) this is the L15…
Thanks,
Jerry
hi Jerry
thanks for that info, l have been searching for years to gather this sort of information, your idea of creating a register and info web site sounds exciting, it’s obviously going to be allot of hard work so anything l can help you with, just drop me a line, you can reply to my private email address, [email protected], just put lys in the subject line and l will send you some pics and the serial number, once again thanks for the info look forward to hearing from you.
I posted in an earlier thread but for those working on a registry, letting you know that I possess a Lys 10, Serial # 8392, marked “Demo” on sticker.
I was checking on the year of my guitar the LYS L18 (serial# 8345) and from what ive been told its from the early to mid 1970s. I have taken it in to a guitar shop that is in town, Kelowna, BC Canada and got it tuned up he planes and polishes the fret board, sets the action, makes a new nut bone and dremels the bridge for proper tone. It is amazing work and makes the guitar play better then anything I have ever played. I am still curious though about the value??
l have just checked the serial number on my lys L18 after reading your comment, l have put some info on the blog above yours but my number is 9568 the information is on the inside of the guitar and states that it was hand made of solid wood, apart from that l don’t have much info but what l just noticed is that the back of the guitar is slightly arched and the top is flat this is quite unusual, like you l would never sell mine but if you leave me a message and email address l will send you some pics as it sounds as though yours is nearly identical to mine,l have been searching for years to see if anyone had an L18 that wasnt a cutaway, let me know if your interested in trading pics, this is quite exciting for me as l know how rare the full bodied L18 is.
Do you know how old your Lys -18 is? I have an L-18 CW. The serial # is 9593. I assume it is not as old as yours. I too would like to know if it has any value as a collectors item. I like this guitar too much to ever sell it.

Lys guitars were made in the early 80’s by Godin. He now makes his own line of electric guitars, and well as does work for seagull guitars. They guitars were very well made and last a life time I have a L18CW as well and I have never seen it’s like. The sound will also get better with age as it has a fine spruce top. I bought mine in 1981 for about $315 Canadian. If you ever decide to part with yours feel free to contact me.

:Hello
I own a LYS L20. It is a very basic guitar, as far as appearance. It is blonde in colour as well as the back. Although the back has red horizontal knurling.
The reason I am writing is…I am seeing a lot of guitar owners saying they have 1981, 82, LYS’s. My understanding is…The LYS factory had a major fire in 1980, and didn’t re-open until 1983, My doubts are obvious. My L20 was made in 1980, serial number 1131.did you know…The guitars made pre-fire were handmade by Richard Godin and Normand Bucherer(please excuse spelling). The information I am leaving in my message is info I obtained on/via the internet.

Do you know how old your Lys -18 is? I have an L-18 CW. The serial # is 9593. I assume it is not as old as yours. I too would like to know if it has any value as a collectors item. I like this guitar too much to ever sell it.
: Lys guitars were made in the early 80’s by Godin.

Where do you see model # on the Lys?? I have a serial # 13191 (young compared to your numbers i suspect). Absolutely magic piece, bought in Toronto in 80’s and travelled the world now with me in South Africa. Where can i find when made, bit about manufacture, types of wood used, model etc? Any info would be great, never sell just real interested. Thanks.

Guitars from Claude Boucher :
http://www.boucherguitars.com/
Hello, I have an old Lys (6 strings) and I have to admit it has an amazing sound. My guitar was bouhht in Montreal and is still in show room condition. It was also tuned and balanced by a professional "luthier". The only thing, I don’t play anymore and would like to concentrate on my first instrument, the sax.
So yes, the guitar is for sale at $575. It’s not only a good deal, it:s a part of history. The guitar was made by Norman Boucher (father-creator of Norman and Boucher
guitars).
I can be reached at 613-612-5542. (Ottawa)
i was trying to find information about a guitar that was recently handed down to me. It is an L30 serial # 1169 with DEMO stamped on the interior label. It also says right on the label it was made in 1980.
This being the case, why is there such little information on these guitars. Godin left this line alone and went to work for himself? How did all of this transpire. This guitar is all a light brown/auburn with the fleur de lys headstock and nice wood grains.
Has definitive bottom end, great upper tonal clarity, and no overtones of a noticable nature.
If anybody can tell me anything else about this guitar I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks SIMON
: :Hello
: I own a LYS L20. It is a very basic guitar, as far as appearance. It is blonde in colour as well as the back. Although the back has red horizontal knurling.
: The reason I am writing is…I am seeing a lot of guitar owners saying they have 1981, 82, LYS’s.

Hey!
I came across this thread because I’m thinking of refinishing my old Lys L18CW and was looking around for inf.
I have a Lys L18cw serial number only 4 digits away from yours. Mine is serial number 9597!
The heel of the guitar snapped along the glue line 22 years ago and it’s been sitting around in the case ever sinc.
5 years before that the airlines snapped the headstock and I had that repaired also. So it’s not in mint condition, but I’m looking forward to having it completely repaired and refinished over the next few monhs!
All the best.

I own one that was bought new…I can’t tell you much about them other than what has already been written here – Mine was bought around ’81 and has a low 1000 serial number. Still a wonderful instrument..

I bought the guitar new in 1980 to start with and I have subsequently found out that LYS were made in Ottawa or Hull Que, and that the factory was purchased by Godin and burned in 1981. The line was discontinued at that time. Too bad I’d love to have a second L 18 CW or a 12 string. I’ve seen the 12 strings on E-bay occasionally for about $200 US, but I’ve never seen another L-18CW, most people I run into think I’m playing a Taylor, not an insult.
Oh yes my serial number is: 10618 so it doesn’t really jive with your serial number, but I have the feeling the first three numbers are the serial number and the last two are the model

: I had a 12 string LYS with the satin blonde body and rosewood neck myself in the early 80’s and i paid £160.00 for it but no matter how much i tried i could get the action down so i could only play around the the top nut end and not up the fretboard so i sold it and bought an epiphone pr700 which is a much better guitar by far so my advice is unload if you can bye for now

I have recently come across a LYS L18, (serial# 8345) guitar that was my great grandpas. I already have some vintage acoustics and am very excited about his one. I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything more about this specific guitar. I know it is handmade in Canada, I believe Quebec to be more specific but anything else i could find out would be great. I am also very curious about value, my grandpa said it was about $600 canadain new?
I would love to know more about it,and how much it’s worth
Hi Rolly, the L2 is the 2nd in the model roll up it is aoften made of laminated so the value is around 200$ depending of its condtion.

I have just bought a LYS luthier 10-12 in very good condition, apart from the bridge being bolted to the top to keep it down. It has a bolt on neck with two bolts, but on the top of the neckblok there are two little allan-screws. Is that somekind of neck angle-adjustment mekanism?,it looks kind of the same, that you would find on a sixties vega banjo, but for this to work, one must asume, that the fingerboard tounge is not glued onto the top of the guitar. Anyone out there who knows ??
Hi, I collect Lys guitars and any data on them. From my search the Luthier series is the last series of Lys just before they transited to the Seagull brand name.

Jerry
do you know serial number info, my L10 doesn’t have a year stamp on the label, the serial number is 12256. so I have had it since the mid to late 80’s bought at a used store.
Hi,
They stop indicating the year on the label in mid-1981…
Considering your serial number it would be ones of the latest series, just before the Lys became the Seagull just after Robert Godin bo the Norman brand near 1983…
If you can send me some pics (front, back, peghead front & back, the heel area, and the label. I collect Lys guitars and try to trace back the ones still in circulation today, I should publish a page soon either a Facebook or a Web page.
Thanks.

Hi, I collect Lys guitars…Your luthier 18 is made of walnut with a spruce top, all solid wood.
It was manufactured near the end f Lys production probably in 1983…
Value depends of its condition, in good shape I would say around 350-400$, in excellent shape 400-500$>

Jerry,
I just picked up a L-25 (circa 1980, Serial #1098) from a neighbor who was doing some downsizing. Hard to find details on this model. Was hoping you could help fill me in?
This one is quite loved in places, but just scuffs and some rash where it looks like the pick guard once was. It has great action and sounds warm, though there are some intonation issues starting around the 10th fret and the apparent original electronics seem deceased. But I didn’t take it off his hands to plug in. It was dirt cheap, it looks sexy, and I had been browsing for an older original Seagull and, well, this is even more original.
Thoughts?

I am looking at buying a LYS L-15 serial number 13053. I’ve read it is solid Spruce top, back & sides. An odd combination.
Can you tell me what year that serial number was made? I do not have access to the whole label, if the year may be stamped on it.
Also, do you know what the scale length is?
Dave
Hi Dave, you were missing an r in Jerrybriand…
Yes the L15 is an all spruce model, kind of like the Manik made by Norman guitars in the 70s…
Yours was probably made near the end of 1982 and the year was not marked on the label from mid 1981 and afterwards.
Not sure of the scale I would have to check my Lys…
Jerry
Hi Dave, sorry my mistake my email is missing an R in jerry…[email protected]

Bumping this thread as it’s an important one.
I have a L20…was my very first guitar. Bought it used in 1984ish. She’s been a good lady but is a bit under the weather. Debating if she’s worth getting restored.
Hi everyone!
Could you please let me know about the specs of the LYS L20, this is a 1980. I am about to buy it and I would like to know the type of wood it is made of and if it is all solid wood.
Thank you for your help!
Leo
Hello Lovers of Lys!
I’m very happy to have found this thread.
I have a Lys L3 Serial # 8605. Looks like it could be wild cherry back and sides, but it could be walnut, and it could be a maple top, although the top resembles the grain of the back and sides so I’m guessing all walnut or all wild cherry. Very bright tone! One single stripe of wood marquetry down the back. Simple 3 ply marquetry ring around soundhole with 2 small wood rings and 1 dominant tortoise shell ring. Black teardrop pickguard. Tortoise shell binding on top and back. Tortoise shell truss rod plate. Rosewood bridge, fretboard, and fantastic headstock faceplate. 3-piece mahagony neck.
I love the headstock! The action is very high, and I won’t be able to get it back down without a screw (as mentioned way above, and a solution from one guitar store owner), or resetting the neck. I have enough guitars that I can dedicate one to open tuning and slide, so I’m not tinkering with the neck (or the bright tone, also mentioned above.)
The information in this thread seems to be going in one direction only – towards the person compiling a database. I admire the project, so I am happy to contribute, but I would like a bit of feedback please.
If I could know the year it was manufactured, a breakdown of the serial number, and what the production run of the L3 was, that would be greatly appreciated!
Play on!
Jerry,
I have a LYS L20, year 1980, serial number 1209. I purchased this guitar in 1981. At the time I was told that the body of the guitar was made of White Birch and the neck of Rosewood. The guitar is in excellent condition and the sound is fantastic. Found your sight recently which proved to be very helpful and thought you might to add this one to your data base.

If you still have this guitar for sale, I’d be interested. My husband has one and my son has always tried to steal it.
I live in Quebec city and I have a L10-12 (12 strings) Lys guitar. It is still a good guitar and the body is nice. The wood looks great. I had to make repair the neck but I heard almost all Lys guitar had a problem with the neck. I can say, for what I know that this guitar is a great vintage instrument. Many novelters are interested in it.

Hey Folks,
This is part of the Lawsuit series. Takamine copyed Martin guitars in the early 1970’s and copied them well. They are excellent instruments, they sound and feel very much like the Martin they were copied from. Here is a link to a takamine site. Enjoy those guitars as they are very cool. I had one of the first in the country as I worked a music store in the Bay Area back then. Wish I still had it.

I HAVE A SIX STRING TAKAMINE BLOND GUITAR IN MINT CONDITION. THE NUMBERS INSIDE ARE F-350M.
CAN YOU TELL ME IT’S WORTH? THANK YOU, NICK.
I recently got a GRAND Flying V copy. It is essentially a copy of the Gibson ’67 re-issue. It is black white tri-level pickguard, unsure of the wood. The tuning pegs are sheer crap, but for $150.00 I can’t complain and will swap ’em out anyway. It has 2 black uncovered pick-ups haven’t played it through an amp yet, but I’ll probably get rid of them too. The fit andd finish is super nice however, and a nice thin bolt-on neck with rosewood fretboard. The main question is this: Has anyone heard of GRAND guitars and I’d love to hear opinions. I have not played for nearly 10 years, so I am just hacking away and a rank , now middle-aged, amateur. I will say I was impressed as ,other than the bolt-on neck, it reminded me of a Gibson Silver-burst V I had in 1979.

: Hi,
: Does anyone have any idea what the value of a Takamine model F307 in mint condition be? Thanks.
A good clean one, without dings, knocks and good structure shouls be between 400-700 range, depends on the market, but in the STL Mo. market about 500.00
They have been going for about 150-175 bucks on the last two ebay auctions. Last one was definitely mint, and went for 175 bucks. I have had them "staked out" so I know that for sure.

I’m trying to date my guitar my grandfather left me but I cant find any info on it. It’s a very old . Older than i am and I’m 37. It says it’s E 307 inside, but the E looks a little blurry. Looks like it was eother stamoed twice with an E of it could have been stamped with and E and an F or it. Where the date should be it says 47.8.18. There is nothing on the tag inside just the model.

My older brother bought one with the Hawaiian Koa wood in 1982 , paid $400 back then.
I just bought it back from a third party last night ( 30 years later)and paid $450.
The case is still good and the guitar is mint.
My first axe was an Aria Pro II YS-500 that I traded away about 20 years ago in a fit of juvenile heavy metal mania. I’d love to redeem myself and replace it! Any leads appreciated (esp. on-line databases).

Hi Dale,
just wondering if you still have the Dauphin Model 60. If so, where is it and how much do you want for it?
: I have a Dauphin model 60 I bought new in 1980 when I was a classical guitar student in college. Regretably, it has not been played since I graduated in 1983. I should sell it. Any advice on what it is worth would be appreciated. Brazillian rosewood, solid spruce top, etc. Very nice guitar. I can supply the serial number if you want. Please reply to my e-mail address at shiplaw.com. Thanks, Dale
Dale,
I am interested in buying your old Dauphin Model 60 and if you could email me or call me at (325) 665-2290, I could almost definetly buy it. As long as the neck isnt bowed or arched. I am young and interested in studying that type of music also and dont want to get screwed over by a large company that sells expensive plywood. Your reply would be greatly appreciated (preferably by phone).

I have a pristine Dauphin model 60 for sale on Ebay currently if anyone’s interested.
Is the instrument still available?
How much are you asking for the guitar?

i’m hoping this can reach the right person who knows a little more about Pan guitars.
i found one on the side of the road when i went for my evening walk…it’s a Pan guitar made from Japan with the serial number 9602. would anyone know more info about this or point me in the right direction?
I was hoping to hear anything about this model.
: The trail of the Pan guitar brand leads back to the Aria guitar company. The Arai Co. was originally founded by classical guitarist Shiro Arai sometime in the early 1950s as an importing company which expanded in the mid 1950s and began manufacturing classical guitars. Electric guitar production began around the turn of the decade and the Aria and Aria Diamond names were adopted. Offerings at that time consisted of various solid and hollow body guitars loosely influenced by western designs such as the "Bison" and "Jaguar". Arai Co. also manufactured a number of re-brands and components distributed by other importers. Evidence of this can be seen in the design and construction of such brands as Univox, Conrad, Lyle, Domino, Maxi-Tone, Pan, Arita, and a number of others. The following link will lead you to a site which describes the history of the Aria company and some of the copyright lawsuits filed by American makers when the "Japanese Invasion" began in the 60’s. http://www.therathole.org/guitars/arai_matsumoku.html

Will not travel with it as it could not be replaced as it is my first guitar. Ever. Oh my. Glad to have learned here about its historical connection to Mr Arai. Excellent shape and quality materials.
I have a PAN copy of a Les Paul probably From the early 60’s or 70’s an it plays beautiful. I bought it in the early 80’s and keep it well maintained in case it will valuable some day
I’m looking for information on my Father’s guitar. It is a Pan, model #1390, serial # L4141. I’m curious as to it’s age, origin, and possible value. Any insight would be valued and appreciated. Thank you.
I have a Pan electric guitar that my wife bought for me in 1977. The tone switch does not work anymore. I was wonder in anyone knows where I can find one with all three holes in it, including the cable connection hole. I need one with tone switch hole, volume hole, tone hole, and cable connect. All in one plate. I plan to keep this guitar and hand it down to one of my Grand children or great grands!
I recently aquired a Pan acoustic guitar , has 2 model numbers, with a pick guard of the Gibson Hummingbird, rectangular pealoid on the neck, pretty redish/blond top , top looks like mahogany (inside ), the sides and back look like mahogany, opens tuners, adjustable bridge, says made in Korea.
Would any one have a clue what it is worth?
the manufacturer?
the age?
SN. 73100170.
Thank you,
michael
I have a PAN Acoustic too. I bought it new about 40 years ago. It has a similar SN number 73100816. It also has these numbers inside H595 and A3340. I too am wondering what it is worth. It still plays really well and I love it. Mine says Made in Japan.
Anyone know it’s value????

I have inherited a Pan Custom Gibson Dove clone. Made in the 60’s, and warm sounding. Have not found alot of good info on it. But, I will never let it go. Sound it most important, well, and keeping her in the family…
I found a Gibson Dove clone by Pan on Craigslist in Portland. It was $300 and was so darn beautiful I had to buy it. Came with an old case with magenta lining…sweet. It is all blonde. Wondering if maybe these are two peas from the same pod. Would love to swap photos.
I have a Gibson dove clone from the sixties also in mint condition. The label says Pan guitar, Turner musical instruments limited. I read an article that said Turner musical instruments limited was a division of Gibson. So is it a clone or not a clone? Who knows? It came with the original case (bad shape) original strap ( perfect shape) and a round bar capo that you tie on. Can anyone add to this? I paid $135. Canadian
I have a 1974 Pan/ Alembic Strat copy 3 tone sunburst with original owners manual . Maxon pickups, with original bridge cover. Very nice sounding guitar, and plays very well since spending some time setting it up. Can’t find another one like it anywhere. Just thought I’d put this out there if someone has one of these besides me. Thanks!!!
I too have a PAN H490 acoustic guitar and was wondering if anyone knew anything about this particular model or how much they go for or are worth. Mine was given to me by a distant relative who has since passed away and knowing him he probably picked it up at a garage sale, so I have no real background on my guitar. All I have been able to find out is that it is probably a copy of a Martin 00, but I have not been able to unearth any specifics. Any further information would be greatly appreciated!

My father bought me my Pan classical guitar in 1972 for $120.00, not cheap at all in those days. It says inside model II 385, made in Japan. Any idea what it’s worth?
I have a Pan P23 in mint condition. It is a beautiful electric guitar with mother of pearl inlay and it is the colour starburst orange. It is vintage so I am wondering what the value is now?
Sincerely, Gloria
I am wondering if you could send me a couple of digital photographs of your PAN guitar (front, back, bridge (closeup), keys (closeup), and the best you can of the label (writing on the inside). I am compiling a dossier on all “PAN” Guitars. Respectfully, MT

I have a PAN P23 that I used through high school (over 40 years ago). It’s burgundy with the tremolo and S/N 94600 on the neck plate. The label inside says P23 and 60418. Now I have a lot of Gibson’s (LP custom, 335 Canadian Ltd Ed., 10th Anniversary Custom Shop SG, Epi Wildkat and a Rickenbacker 360 copy as I can now afford these. But this PAN brings back memories of playing in a high school group with teenage friends. I’m going to completely restore it and play it again. It has nowhere near the sound quality of my Gibson’s but it has the sentimental feel.

By looking at your serial # I know that your guitar was the 90th stamped instrument on approx. December 6, 1978. I have seen similar on ebay, but not with our particular model letters. I have heard that our model was produced for about 1 and 1/2 years, and is very rare. Feel free to contact me.

Any know about the terada no c 308? I just got 1-can’t find info.
Yes, its a rare surviving model -i have one ! its Flamenco Blanka style and not classical, made from cypress, and i consider it to be of superior quality to other far more expensive guitars that i have. This guitar has slipped well under the radar of Flamenco players and in my opinion a superb classic.
Hi.
I have been given a badly damaged Terada C307n, but cannot find any information about it.
The worst part of the damage is the sound board. More than half the sound board has come away from the sides.
Could you tell me anything about this model.
Is it worth fixing?
Thankyou.
Kind Regards.

I have an almost mint TW910 Terada. My brother made me buy it when he discovered I played the harp almost 40 years ago. It does look a lot like a Martin and sounds pretty good. I use a medium string and remember my brother everytime I look at it.
It sits on a guitar stand 2 feet from were I watch TV. Always within reach and played often.
Thanks for the info about the Terada Site.

I just came back from playing today. I brought my Martin D-35 6 string, and my Terada FW912 12 string. Both have internal pickups. I bought the Terada in 1972 in Schenectady NY for $200.00, and the Martin in 1980 for $400.00. Anyway the leader I was playing with listened to both, and prefered the Terada’s sound. It’s old, but has spent most of it’s life tuned down 1 to D. But, today I brought it all the way up with new strings and it sounds GREAT! Oh – and next to the Martin, it looks just like it’s 12 string brother. I guess that was the idea,

: I purchased My Terada TR 1000 From Hermies Music store in Schenectady NY in 1973. I play it almost daily. the TR 1000 was my first guitar. Recently, I considered trading it in. However the Music store in NC where I was going to trade it had no reference to it’s value and at the time he said he didn’t have anything in the store that sounded as good. My TR 1000 has certainly mellowed with age and continues to sound great. Needless to say I decided to keep the old axe.

Good choice with the Martin ,I have a Terada its a FL202 and it was my grandads and i love it i also have a newer Ibanez that i bought a few week after christmas (2006) but i am not sure about it yet the Terada just feels alot better although its a hell of alot more uncomfy than the Ibanez and its not electro acoustic but i doesnt realy matter….
I purchased a Terada 12 string model 1012 recently.Does anyone know how old it may be?What the value may be also,as i am not a guitar player,i just couldn’t pass up a sweet deal!
Hi Oscar
My understanding is that the current price for my T18 is around £3500 stirling! I had to re-surface the top which has an unusual finish. I would get yours to a REALY good luthier if it needs work. Please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected].

I have a Jagard Mark 31LV made by Terada. I bought it circa 1974 for $99. It has red and green inlaid lights on the fretboard. They will randomly flash slow/fast with the twist of a knob. The lights are powered by a 9 volt battery. Like many other folks I can’t find out much on the internet. It is almost 50 years old and has a very deep, rich sound. I’d sure like to find out more about this awesome guitar…..Jan

Just looking for some general information on a Guitar that I picked up from a Clearance Sale approx 5yrs ago.

Hi I have the same guitar,
I don’t have any feedback if it’s history as it was passed down to me from a friend 20yrs ago.
Did you find any information about the guitar?
I do like the guitar sound it plays
Hi all
I found this forum while searching some information about a Terada that i’ve inherited but unfortunately i do not play music at all 🙁
This guitar was produced in 1961 and it’s a maple wood with spruce top. Can you all help me in estimating its value?
Thank you very much!
Rosi
1972, I was touring with my band. We were somewhere in central Pennsylvania (Broomall?) and I had saved some money. I’d always wanted to buy a Martin. There was a nice music store nearby and I went in to get my long-wanted Martin 6 string. I was prepared to pay over $300 remember, this was 1972 when that was a lot of money). A guitar caught my eye. A 12 string. Without looking at the brand I picked it up. What an amazing clean and clear sound…and a 12 string that played almost as easily as a 6. I asked the store guy, how much? He said $70. Immediately I said, wrap it up. Then I thought I needed to protect it. A really nice hard-shell case was $20. So, for $90 and a small amount of tax I got a guitar that I have used in many recording sessions from the early 1970s through the 1990s when I sort-of retired from playing (I was primarily a keyboard player, among other instruments). Sometime in the late 1980s one of the tuning pegs (the thin high b string) broke and for a while I played it as an 11 string. I took off the thin 5 strings and played it for a few more years as a 6, always figuring I’d get that peg fixed. I recently picked it up to play it for the first time in a looooong time. At least 30 year old strings and it still sounds pretty damn good. With new strings it should sound great. I should get that tuning peg fixed so I can have a 12 string again. I just went on-line to see how much the guitar might be, today, figuring it would be around $1500 or more. I was surprised/disappointed that there was not a website for Terada to see how much it might cost today. But, a google search found one for only $350 (I think that was only a 6 string). Google also brought me here.
I have been given Terada guitar nó.g120 , but cannot find any information about it.
Could you tell me anything about this model.
Is it worth fixing?
Thankyou.
I have a Terada FL 202 in good condition. Anyone who knows when it`s made etc…… Seems like the factory and brand is still in business so maybe someone has contact info ?
Daniel (sweden)

Hi recently purchased a Terada c307n classic guitar. Could anyone give any information about age, and value etc. Appears intact other than one string missing. Thanks.
G’day Mick. Did you find any more info on your guitar..? I was given a 1961 version of the C307N yesterday and am looking forward to restringing it and having a play. The tone is amazing.
I’ve had a nylon string Terada since about 1969. Beautifull tone, lovely to play. Travelled extensively including 2 1/2 years on a yacht, still looks almost new & sounds so rich. ser no GU2555. Engraved machine head. Never seen another one.
Yep I have the exact same model, carved headstock. Had it for years, plays and sounds so good. Value dont know. I paid in 1973 Australia $90 second hand with hard case, cheers.
Hello, I picked up a Terada Classic Guitar serial no. G u 2530 at a garage sale for $3.00 Au.
I picked it up thinking this looks cheap and nasty — played a few notes on it and was awestruck.
I have been playing guitar since 1962 (its all the Beatles & Stones fault, although Duanne Eddy & Ricky Nelson have a share.) err also Senor Segovia, Manuel da Plata, Julian Bream et al.
This is one of the few guitars I have tried that needed to be saved. What a genuine beautiful tone it has. I have had a few classic’s over the years and this beats them all for clarity & again tonal projection – soft to loud and in between.
It must be early 60s – 70s. The fretboard is rosewood and does its job but is in need of replacement.
The timber is or appears to be nothing special just veneer. But the top is quite thin. and the bracing is copycat Spanish.
This guitar can be very sonorous and clear and loud ( i’ve already said it.)
If I had to value it I would put large figure on it – this is, or seems to be a rare guitar and although it appears nondescript
it is one of those guitars that immediately speaks and if you play guitar at all well you will know exactly what I mean.
Walk into any guitar shop and you could be there for hours trying to find one that has that elusive quality – it is getting tougher these days to find one.
I’ve just picked up a Tarada GU 3561 with an adjustable Bridge looks about early 60s to 70s.also has 507 inside.
Wow $20.
Need info…… Anyone??????
41 years ago, I bought a Terada steel strung acoustic in a junk shop in the North West of England. It’s obviously a copy of a Gibson Dove, complete with an adjustable bridge. Since then, I’ve owned a number of guitars, including a 1960s Gibson Hummingbird, and I can tell you that my old Terada is up there with the best. The tone is sensational, though I have to admit I prefer the neck of a Hummingbird, which is slightly slimmer. I don’t know much about the Terada other than that it was made in Japan. The back and sides are maple; the fretboard is rosewood, and it looks as good as it sounds. I wouldn’t part with it. That said, I’ve occasionally come across identical Teradas over the years, and some are average, some poor, and only one other was outstanding. As to why that is, I wouldn’t know, but if you come across one, don’t buy it unless you’ve played it. They differ in quality.
Hi, I inherited a terada FL202 and can’t find anything about it on the Internet. Does anyone know anything about this model? I love it, but it needs some work! Thanks.
I have one also, I love it
Inherited it from my Grandfather years ago
Hi all
I have a Terada FW – 713. It was my dad’s. He bought it second hand in the late 90’s. I cannot find any info on it. I have gone through many guitars since I started playing two decades ago and this Terada is by far the best. I would just like to know the specifications of it… But there is absolutely nothing on the net.
Any info would be appreciated. My email is [email protected]
I bought a nylon string guitar from a musician who had played the guitar since the early 1970’s for $380 early this year. The guitar has been played so much that a good deal of the varnish has worn off.
I walked into the secondhand music store to by a cheap but reasonable sounding nylon string guitar. However when he played the Terada I was blown away. It was loud and the notes that came from it were beautiful and clear and I had to have it and now! I think I would have payed a thousand dollars if he had insisted on it. My guitar playing ( I’m learning classical guitar) suddenly became much more inspiring and fun. I love my guitar and have to fight my teenage grandsons to play it as it is so popular. Thanks, to Terada all those years ago. What a beautiful sounding instrument.
Thanks Mary.
I bought my Terada from a shop in Shaftsbury Avenue when the area was loaded with guitar shops. Around about 1976/77.
The model number on the Terada inspection note inside the guitar reads 3188. It’s still in very good condition and has a lovely deep sound. Apart from that I have no knowledge, value etc.
I once saw a web site that invited Terada owners to show off their guitars with photos but cannot trace it. Any ideas?
A friend of mine gave me a Terada JW 386 in really bad shape. My question is: are these guitars good? by the looks of it its going to be expensive to repair this guitar, does it pay to repair? I tried to find some info about this guitars but couldnt find much, other than they’re from Japan…
I have since 1988, one Terada Japanese made electric guitar.
I don’t know how that instrument came to Chile (South america), where I live.
The guitar has no info about model. I can’t find info on the web about Terada “electric” guitars.
Many people, and many musicians tell me I have a special vintage kind of guitar.
I don’t want to sell it, but I want to know what kind of instrument I have.
Sorry about my english, I speak and write spanish, that’s my language.
thank you for any help…
bye.
I cannot find a thing on this model. Is there any one know anything about this guitar?
Searched the internet on this one terada does not list that model FW74 if there is any info on it pls let me know..
I have the FW 74 as well. Had it for years now. Sounds great, good tone and action. No clue what I paid for it or what it is worth these days.
I have one of these as well , Love the guitar. Would like more info too. Some kind of Martin copy I guess.
Hi.
I bought this guitar at a carboot sale for £10. It is as new and came with soft bag but was strung L/Handed and someone had painted dots on the neck which came off without marking. Restrung the correct way and sounds realy great lovely deep sound.
Best tenner I have spent
I have owned a Terada TR1000 since 1975. My wife, who knew nothing about guitars, bought it for me for a gift on our 1st wedding anniversary. She took the word of the sales person when she was shopping around for a guitar. What luck she had in deciding to buy this great guitar. The action on it is superb. The fit and finish is every bit as good as my Takamine EG334SC. Having owned it for 36 years I cannot say enough about it. I have been playing guitar since I’m 9 years old and have never had a reason to replace this guitar. I bought the Tak a few years ago as I have always been a fan of them. I love there sound.
The Terada has aged with grace and the sound is as soft as it is rich. The guitar has a rich mellow bass sound while at the same time the highs are not overwhelming and there is absolutely no fret buzz. The construction of this guitar is of high quality and after all these years the brigde hasn’t moved.
I have a few worn spots on it but that is because I tend to play a lot of bluegrass themed music , Ozark Mountain Daredevil , Ricky Scaggs and also a lot of Alan Jackson, Clint Black, Kieth Whitley, Buck Owens, Charlie Pride etc. I play 50’s and 60’s music also. Great all around guitar.
I’d love to acquire another Terada but haven’t seen one in a store anywhere. Anyone have a lead on where I might be able to check them out?
I’ve got a Terada TR-1000 in very good shape. Purchased in 1975.
Most likely will sell it, if anyone is interested. Hate the thought of dropping dead and it ending in the trash
We have discovered the above guitar (serial no. 500). It is probably 1930s(?) and is covered in mother of pearl. A brown sunburst with a mother of pearl scratch plate. No electrics and in mint condition! It has "f" holes but non standard. It has a floating bridge with the strings anchored at the end pin. It is a VERY unusual guitar and we would dearly like to know more about it but have been unable to locate anything on the web. Suggestions or information please.

Have you received any responses? I am curious as to the value of my Takamine F340 with the Martin headstock.
rivulets has used a mid-70s takamine f340 outfitted with an L.R. Baggs system for all his recordings. see rivulets.net
I have a "tiger" striped (yellow/off-white) Kay acoustic guitar. It has a mahogony colored pick guard. I dont see any distinguishing numbers or marks on it. I cant seem to find a comparable one on any vintage guitar sites. I am interested in age, model, and value. Can anyone help?
