hi I have a swedish levin model 119 serial no417013 it is a parlour sized model and sounds and plays wonderfully with nylon strings.I would like to know if it could handle light steel strings.
Michael,
According to the Levin serial number lists, Your guitar should be a 1961. In the 1956 Levin catalog model 119 is pictured, and describes approximately (my translation from swedish):
"Expensively made guitar in school model. Sides and bottom in birch. Top of Alp spruce with beautiful inlays around soundhole and top. Mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard. 595 mm scale length. An easy to play guitar especially suitable for ladies and young people. One Year warranty. Price: 130 SEK." (1956)
Based on the design of neck head and tuners, I would say that it is primarily made for steel strings, and that it probaly takes steel strings to get full sound out of it.
I hope this information helps You…
Best regards…./Magnus

I live in Shropshire, UK and recently discovered a Levin model 119 owned by a neighbour/friend. She has owned the guitar from new when it was bought for her to learn guitar when she was 12 years old in the late 1950’s. (Purchased in Birmingham, UK). It was fitted with steel strings which had not been changed for many years and are possibly the original strings; the owner has no recollection of replacing them at any time. The serial number – 357232 – indicates it was made in 1957. The instrument is in good condition and has cleaned up beautifully. I have dressed the fingerboard and am about to replace the original machine heads which were broken. I am looking forward to playing it with new strings fitted. (It sounded good and played in tune with the old strings on!). Can anyone tell us how much this guitar is worth?
Mort Smith.
I have a Levin 119 which was strung with nylon strings when I bought it. The guitar site Vintage Guitars Sweden cites the Specifications as:
Levin model 119
Non-cutaway.
Body width: 320 mm.
Body length: 450 mm.
Body depth: 98 mm.
Fingerboard width: 45 mm.
Scale length: 630 mm.
Spruce top.
Flame birch back & sides.
?-bound top.
Unbound back.
Mahogany neck.
Unbound rosewood fingerboard.
Rosewood bridge.
Nickel plated tuners with white plastic buttons.
Natural finish.
One year warranty.
Introduced: ca 1955
It also lists the Model 119 in the “Levin classical bridge steel-strung guitar” section.
Interestingly, Mort Smith, the serial number of my Levin 119 is only 2 along from your own at 357234. It’s easy to play. Soft.
There is a Levin 119 up for sale on the net for $1250.00 but I guess that could be wishful thinking. On the other hand it could be worth more… I like Levins…

Can any one help me with a picture of a brass truss rod cover for a 1958 Levin , or better still a cover to purchase.

Ian,
I think You will find a good picture in this link:

Last fall I found a broken Goya neck with a brass cover like that on ebay, wich I won for 12 bucks.

hi
could you help me?
I have a levin model number LT-23
I have had it for 30 odd years
any history and price?
cheers
Eddie,
The LT-23 was introduced in the mid to late 1960:s, as a cowboy version of the LT18. It is a Goliath size (Levins version of a Dreadnought) with maple back and sides, spruce top and ebony fretboard with square shapes block inlays, adjusted to the bass side.
What makes it a cowboy guitar is the special pickguard with a cactus and a cowboy on, There are also an additional black piece of plastic in rear of the bridge, and I believe also cactus figure on the truss rod cover. There was a special shape of the bridge, which was in ebony.
I do believe the model was created as a Goya T23 for the American market to atract country& Western musicians. I disapeared from the catalogs after 1968.
I have seen one Goya T23 go on ebay and it went high, as I remember 850$
I imagine it would sell for more in Europe. It is a great guitar, allthough a bit vulgar.
On a Levin You should find a serial number on the tip of the headstock, or on the label in the soundhole. This can lead You to the model model year. look at
http://www.gitarren.se/radotips/sernr_levin.html
Hope this is what You wanted.

: Alan,
: Model 163 was introduced in 1969, to the best of my knowledge, and was manufactured until at least 1972, when Levin introduced (1973) a new line, which did´t include any sunburst models. It replaced the Levin LN26 and was basically the same guitar. The LN26 was available since the early sixties.
: These guitars were also available Goya branded for the north american market. I have a Goya model 163 myself, and I think it is a great guitar. I also have a model 174, which looks a bit more fancy, but not nescessarily any better.

Hi Magnus
Thanks for the information on my guitar, much appreciated, the serial number cannot be seen its faded away and can just make out the model number 163.
Its got a beautiful sound, I play it most of all even tho I have another 3 guitars, ( it had a bad accident about 10 years ago when my wife knocked it over and snapped the head clean off, I went all over to get it repaired but they could’nt do it, until a friend of mine who is a joiner put it back together with caskamite, clamped it for 2 days and has been ok ever since. )

I had a TS5 back in the 60’s and let it go to finish a college semester. have not seen one since…..let’s talk
Setting value on an old instrument is very difficult. It depends on so many things. The instruments age, condition, but most of all, who is looking for just that type of instrument right at the moment of sale.
I have seen TS5:s go on ebay lately for prices from 200 to 450$.
Good luck!

Hello and help.
As a kid in Sweden, I had an old acoustic Levin apparently made in 1950 based on the serial #(237175 18). It recently came back in my possession on a visit to Sweden. It is a smaller guitar, I think is called 3/4 size. I am in the process of cleaning it up and would like to give it to my grandson. It would be nice to be able to present it to him with some back ground information. Can anyone point me to some more info about this guitar? Maybe some history and value. I have searched the web without any results.
Regards Tom.
Tom,
There is a great chat site in Sweden with some guys who knows just about all there is to know about Levin Guitars.
It is in Swedish (vilket sannolikt inte är något problem för dig?) but they accept postings in english to.
Best is if You put a digital picture out, and You will have all info in no time.

Need some info on this guitar please. What year, value, label says made in sweeden, would like to verify please.
Hi there
Has anyone got a Levin brass/enamal plate held with three screws that covers the truss rod adjuster just behind the nut.
Peter
Peter,
I have several Goyas with Levin brass plates on, but they are all 2 screws. If there are 3 screw-holes there was probably a 3 layer (black-white-black) plastic or celloid cover plate. That is what they put on the Goyas from sometime early sixties until 1969, when the brass plates returned, sometimes marked Goya sometimes Levin. I have never seen a Levin with the plastic plate….

This popular thread has been given its own page : Goya Levin GG174
: My friend has a Goya Levin GG174 1971 (?) guitar that she’s thinking of selling because she’s had it for years, but barely played it. This guitar belonged to her older brother (I believe he bought it new) and she got it from him in her teens (70’s). The guitar is in wonderful condition (includes the case)and has a beautiful, deep sound (even though it needs new strings). I’ve looked in the Orion Vintage Blue Book, but it’s not listed. Not currently listed on e-bay. I found the ads for it on the web, but no original price listed. Any idea what this guitar might be worth? Thanks!
Pls let me know if your friend still has the guitar and is still considering selling it.
Hi,
I would be interresting in bying a guitar like that, the same model was sold in Eourope as Levin model 174. My beleive is that it replaced Model LT18 (Goya T18). They are fairly seldom seen at ebay, but I have seen Goya T18 go for from 200 to 500$ depending on condition. If You are interrested in selling to me contact me by email ([email protected]). I would like to see pictures. Have a brother in North Carolina and it could be shipped to him.
Best regards Magnus – Gothenburg Sweden (birthplace of Levin/Goyas)
Hi
If I were you I would wait because the Levins/Goyas are priced way too low. I think it´ll only be a matter of time before more people realize the real value of those instruments.
When I bought mine I first compared it to some high end Martins. I liked the Levin sound better and the height of the strings is individually adjustable, an important feature missing at Gibson, Martin, Fender and all the others.
Regards
Franz

I have a Goya classical "Medalist Series" Model M-10. I can find no information on the internet from bowsing sites. Can anybody tell me any information about this guitar. I’ve had it for about 20yrs, but my parents baught it for me, and they can barely even remember where it came from.
When was it made? Is this a nice guitar? Is it worth any substantial amount of money?
I have been trying several times to get in contact with Jack Walsh by sending mail to [email protected], but I get the reply that the "recipents mailbox is full". It has been like this for the last 6 months.

My son picked up a solid body cream white 4 string bass with a chrome pick guard, pick ups and a Wooden thumb rest. He thinks it was made in 1969. We cant find a Model number all we know is that it is made by Greco in Japan. How can we figure out what model and year this is?
Hello,
I was curious about my Classical Goya Greco GR1 guitar that I bought new in 1968 and wondered what it might be worth now? It is still in great condition and is in tune. How would I learn this information? I came across your site and thought you might be able to advise me.

I HAVE A PRE 1964 GRECO GR-9 MADE IN GERMANY DID YOU GET ANY ANSWERS ABOUT YOUR GR-1?
I have a Goya ,serial no.382190 inside tag says AB HERMAN CARLSON,GOTHENBURG SWEDEN. Guitar is in very good cond. slight warpsge & finish is slightly checked.Case, outside is tatered but inside is very good,Goya Levin ID ribbon still there,in perfect cond. I would like some info as to what this guitar is worth.
Richard,
It depends of course not only on the condition of the guitar. What model is it? It is written on the label inside, top left. Anyway, your guitar is made in 1958.
I have searched for Goyas on ebay during the last 12 months, and have a fairly good idea on what the differrent models tend to go for. My general feeling is that they are sell for rather less than the comparable models from american guitar manufacturers (Fender, Gibson, Guild, Gretch, definitely Martin). Only the finer models reach between 800-1200 USD. The models made by Levin (all acoustic Goyas marked "made in Sweden") sell for 100 – 1000 USD depending on condition. Other models made by Martin (made in Korea and Taiwan) sell for less, but clearly these are not the same quality. Levin made excellent guitars, no wonder Martin wanted to get rid of them…

This popular thread has been given its own page : Re: levin Made in Sweden Model 174 serial No 517830
Mike, I have a Goya 174 myself, and it is for shure an amazingly fine instrument. I think the model was released by Levin Guitars (the original manufacturer of Goya)in 1969, as a replacer of the Levin LT18 (Goya T18). The guitar is basically the same, the visible differrence is new shape of the peghead and the pickguard. The 1971 Goya catalog also mention a new bracing system (on the inside of the spruce top), which could explain a slightly differrent sound. For details on the guitar see http://goyaguitars.tripod.com/catalog71_4.htm.
Regarding price, I would say that Goya flattops in general sell cheaper than they should. It seems like the Goya brand name has got a reputation as a cheap import alternative on the american market. This may be accurate for the late 70s to mid 90s when Martin Guitars used the brand name for import of Korean made cheap guitars, but from the early 50s to mid 70:s the Goyas were made by Europes finest manufacturer of Guitars and Mandolins, Levin Guitars of Gothenburg, Sweden. I have seen Goya T18:s, T23:s 174:s, which are all fairly same in design and structure, go for 300 to 800 USD on ebay, depending on shape (and competition). In Europe, the corresponding Levins sell for at least twice the money.
If You could describe the label inside the guitar it would be grand, mine says "Distributed by Dude Inc., Chanute Kansas, serial no 53936", and it has a Levin metal trussrod cover plate on the peghead.
Best regards…./Magnus
I tried a vintage 1944 Martin D18 yesterday It made me cry…..lol The Martin D18 has to be the very best accoustic ever made. I have a vintage Levin Model 174, I have a old Martin D28, I have a Taylor 12 String, Dobro etc…but that Mahogeny back and side construction has to be the very best. Whenever I pick up ANY Martin D18 I Simply can not put it down. Whether I am playing a finger style Gordon Lightfooot tune or some Tony Rice licks…the D18 sounds phenomenal.
Am I alone in this idea? Comments welcome.
Dave http://www.jdgordon.com
I bought my model 174 Levin (Not Goya) in London , England in 1980 serial no 509421 Made in 1970/71.
It is a fabulous guitar, particularly in the studio. The engineers liked it much better than my Martin D28, which surprised me. It is great for finger picking and has a sound very much like a Martin D18…but because is it made from flame maple back and sides , it is not as loud as the D18. But sound wise, surprisingly simular.
I would put a value on mine at between $2,500-3,000 with the case. But I will never sell it. http://www.jdgordon.com

This popular thread has been given its own page : LTG Levin 12 string
I do not know the Levin LTG5 but it sounds to be similar to the LTS5 or the Goya TS5, blond maple back and sides, and chrome open tuners. Anyway, I wouldn´t recommend changing top if it isn´t competely beyond repair. If the sound is affected (vibrations, friction noise…) try repairing the cracks (by a proffessional repairman). The spruce tops in particular, and the fine selected materials in general, were what gave the Levins/Goyas their reputation. You should not focus on the visual looks, but on the fine sound of the guitar, Risk is that it would not be at all the same with exchanged top.
/Magnus
Could you please advise me. I have a 12 string ltg 5. The top is very cracked but I can have a new top put on it for 300 euros. I have a sentimental attachment to this instrument but I would like to know if it is worth anything and whether I will reduce the value by having it repaired in this way. Any help would be much appreciated. Derek Smith
i need to find what year model it is so i can find the price value for it.its emeral or shamrock green sunburst, with old single coil pickups.it has wood under rest for the pickups and has 2 switches one for rythum and lead, and the other for 1st,both,or 2nd pickup.it has 2 volumes and 2 tones.
i inherited this guitar from my grandfather. guess it ment a lot to him. i wanted to know what kind of price range they run for. email me with details, or post or whatever. ([email protected])

Hello, I have a very nice Greco 3-pickup Les Paul copy guitar and I’m looking for a single tuning machine for the treble side. It’s got the ‘tulip glass’ shaped tab on it. One out there? I’d love to buy it off you. Even a full set.
Drop me a line, please.

dude man i got one that sounds just like the one you have.
it is green and has two demon horns on it.
also the string problem that you mentioned is there as well.
there is no model no on it either.
give me an e-mail and i’ll give you a pic.
A friend brought me this Greco guitar that the neck plate reads it was made in Japan. The insignia on the peghead is the same font and script as the ones listed on this site but I am trying to get a little more info on it. It is a hollow body with 2 F holes and has what seems to be a plastic veneer finish over the entire body and the bridge is made of wood with a hardtail bridge and a mock Bigsby trem system. Two single coil type pickups and a Mic1 and Mic 2 toggle switch. The said bridge has felt on the bottom of it and was not secured in place allowing the bridge to float back and forth. This problem was allowing the E strings to "fall off" the neck. There is no prescence of a model number anywhere to help identify the guitar. I have removed the neck to see if there would be a marking there and there isn’t. any help would be appreciated in helping me figure out what to do to set the bridge in place properly and any other adjustments that may be necessary. Thanks you in advance for any help.
P.S. I can a
lso furnish a pic if needed to help accomodate me.

Anybody know anything about the all black electric 6 string they made based on the lucite clearbody? Looks identical except its black instead of clear. Would like to find one. Thanks!
Yea, the guitarist in my band has just bought one. Apparently they were only made in 1990. And just in case you were wondering, he won’t be selling it!
This popular thread has been given its own page : Greco GR125
I have had this one (GR-125 s/n 35203) for 30+ years. My father (who did not play guitar) won it in a raffle or silent auction in the 1970’s at a private school. I recently replaced the tuning machines and restrung it. After about 10 days of string settling and playing in, it sounds amazingly good. I hadn’t really tried to play it much since the first time I replaced the original (broken) tuners about 8 years ago, because the tuners I bought at the time were not very good. With the new ones, however, I am really liking it. I play in an all acoustic group, usually a wire strung Seagull Artist or C6+, but this one really provides a variety. Most of the online info (catalogs, etc.) stop at the GR-124, so if anyone has info on the GR-125, I’d appreciate feedback.
I am also looking for info on a Grego guitar. Mine is model GR622K and has the same Kustom Elec label. Ser. number is 31010. I know the age since I bought it new in 1973.
I have a GR622K. Any idea how much it is worth?

I recently had a Goya 12 string acoustic given to me it was going to go to the dump (a little rough) I was initially going to use it to paint an awesome scene on but now that I have been looking I would rather try to repair it (still thinking about a paint job but that will be last. Anyone know where I could get parts for it and a little history behind it?? age cost back then etc…The single part that is missing is the finger board the rest is sound just a little touch ups and tuner heads need tightening pretty cool though!
Thanks to all
where in the world can i find my replacement for my greco guitar??
I almost broke it….if there are any brand of guitars that match the size in my guitar’s bridge please email me.
Anyone have any idea as to worth? From what I can gather it’s from $500 to $1200 as it’s in excellent condition. Would like to sell.
COULD YOU TELL ME THE AGE OF THIS GUITAR? THE SERIAL NUMBER IS 38438. THE FINISH IS REALLY CHECKED, AND IT HAS SOME SPLITS IN THE FRONT JUST AFTER THE BRIDGE. IT ALSO HAS SOME SPLITTING UP THE CENTER OF THE BACK, I THINK THAT IT’S A JOINT BUT I’M NOT SURE. THE GUITAR WAS STRUNG WITH NYLON WHEN I GOT IT. HOPE YOU CAN HELP TO PUT A DATE ON THIS GUITAR.
THANK YOU,
KEITH
Probably late 50’s or the early 60’s.
My dad has one, i want to know the same thing really… His is in almost perfect condition though he had it re-stringed about a year ago since the old strings werent holding.
Thanks
Kid and his old man
i have a greco 12 string semi acoustic with some weird pickups on it. i have no idea how much it is worth or where it came from. any clues?
OK If you went East, WAAY East, you would find some Greco fans. I’ve read they did not get distributed in USA, maybe Europe though. Worth? Don’t ask! Don’t get insulted! Mine is waiting for hardware and finish. All the plastic has been melted off the dark wood. Can you tell me about those pickups or the switches?
