I have just been asked to sell a shaftesbury resonator guitar for a mate.Ihave no idea what its worth, its in very good condition. Has anyone got any idea?
Is there anybody out there?
Tax returns should be here soon… I will appeal once again to someone (anyone) wishing to sell a Shergold 12-string, or 6 string… please let me know
Steve R
i ve got one to sell from 1975 with original hardcase, perfect condition, let me know and make an offer if you r still interested
regards
Hey there… am I too late… for some reason I thought people would respond directly to my email, but I’ve realized I have to check the website periodically…
Do you still have the SHERGOLD 12 STRING for sale??????????????????????????
Let me know
SR
Yes,still available,in France now but i can bring it back soon,it depends on your offer
Hallelujah… EXCELSIOR!!!!!!!!
YES I’M VERY INTERESTED!!!!!!!!
Offer… offer????????????? I’ll give you about… a hundred bucks (AHHHHHHHHH HA HA HA HA)…
All kidding aside… maybe I should ask you… what are you asking? What’s reasonable… like I’ve said many years in the past around tax time, I’ll be getting my returns soon and I’m ready to purchase a guitar and this one ALWAYS eldues my grasp, but it looks as if I’ve got a chance now…
Why don’t you start and tell me what you want for it and we’ll go from there…
SR
Good evening,
I am willing to let it go for around £1,200. I feel this is a more than fair price for such a rare model in almost perfect condition: Flamed canadian maple neck, Schaller tuning machines . She plays like a dream, better than the Rickenbacker equivalent, I’m sad to let her go.
Let me know what you think.
“CEDRIC”…
If memory serves the conversion on that would be roughly… 2400 dollars (American)????????????
Is that correct… if so, I’d be willing to buy it from you… I’ve been searching for this for a while now…
Let me know and I will take steps to secure it…
Steve R
Yes, great,
Yes it’s roughly that, I think 2,400 is a bit more, so I am willing to sell it to you for that including the shipping cost to the U.S.
Cedric
That would be fabulous…
Hold it for me PLEASE!!… this SATURDAY (MARCH 3rd) I will have my taxes done… when all comes through I will be able to purchase the guitar (allow time for the tax returns to arrive)…
What a threshold moment this is… timing was good this time…
Give me a total price so I will know what to send you…
SR
Are you still buying shergolds?
Hello there… I finally acquired the one I was looking for… a nice 12 STRING…
What are you selling?????
SR
Hi Steve,
I’m looking into the shipping options,i’ll let you know the total price in the next couple of days.
I’m back in France in three weeks time and i’ll be able to send it to you then .
Regards
Cedric
Hi Steve,
Sorry to not give you news earlier,i was pretty busy plus i have some difficulties to have the same amount each time i made a simulation on UPS or Chronopost( sometimes it was 200 or 300 e with the same informations given) so i m going to wait until i’ll be in France(the 27th of March) to check the true postage cost, straight from the post office.
That’s a shame that i can t send you pictures,by the way she’s white exactly like this one:

Cedric, and others searching for one of these…
I know I emailed you directly about how stellar this guitar is, but I thought I should include the praise on the website too… after all, if not for this brilliant website I may never have found one… it took about 5 years, but patience and persistence paid off…
After nearly six months I still can’t believe my ears… this BEHEMOTH of a guitar has a beautiful 12-STRING chiming quality (12-STRINGS have always reminded me of the sound of the Baroque harpsichord [with amplification and desired effects pedals, of course])…
The action is superb, and, unlike some reports that these are bulky and awkward to play, I must say “No… not at all.” It feels great… must be the years of playing the EDS 1275… perhaps that prepared me for this…
Cedric, and those who created this website, thanks again… I couldn’t be happier with this guitar… AND OF COURSE, more regards to Marty Willson-Piper and Mike Rutherford for initial inspiration to seek out the SHERGOLD 12-STRING!!!!
KUDOS, BRAVO, EXCELSIOR!!!!!!!
SR
Cedric…
Steve R here… just to let you know my tax returns have arrived so that part of the equation is in place…
I think you said you return to France (by the way, my ancestry is French… last name is RUSSEY, which is believed to be an anglicized version of ROUSEAU) on the 27th of MARCH… Please let me know the total cost and we’ll arrange the payment (do you have PAYPAL????)…
Thanks again…
SR
Hi Steve,i m going to the ups office today to know how much is gonna cost to send the guitar to Sacramento california(that’s right?)
I would like to send you pictures i made today to show you the cracks in the body finish, normal for a 40 years old guitar and especialy for the old Shergold, but if you know the brand, you probably know what i m talking about.
my email is [email protected] as i don t really know how to send pictures via this website,so please give me your email,it would be more easy.
Regards
Cedric
Sure thing… email me at [email protected] (yes it’s based on the song by THE CHURCH… by the way, am I correct, “TRISTE” is a French word for “Sadness”… I ask because I adore THE CHURCH [Marty Willson-Piper used a SHERGOLD], and I believe the word TRISTESSE is the personification of SADNESS… the song deals with envirnomental concerns down in Australia…
Looking forward to the purchase…
SR
Hi Steve,
i will be in France on tuesday so i will go on wednesday at the post office to check the post cost and will let you know soon next week.
Yes i ve got a paypal account,i think that the most secure way ,they take a commission though but which bank doesn’t..
Are you collecting guitars? How do you know the Shergold brand?
Regards
Cédric

i found my grandpa’s asco guitar and remember playing with it when i was a kid. i’ve never heard of asco. can anyone tell me where it was made or what year they made it? it has a model # but it’s written in pen and i can’t quite read it. i think it would have to be about 30 or more years old.

: : hello! i’m trying like mad to get a construction date for my shaftesbury rodeo 6. the serial number(or stock number) is 3167,can anyone help?
Hi. I have no idea whether you’ll see this, but i’ve found out that 3167 is the model number, not the serial number, as I have one which is 3167 as well. The Rodeo 12 (the 12 string version) was 3168.
Hi, did you ever find out? Mines also a 3167.
My shaftesbury 12 string electric, has the look of a ricky,!!!! but it has aplate on the back clearly saying is was made in Japan as opposed to the general idea that they were made in Italy – does anyone know when the manufacture was changed?
The guitar is still brilliant and I would think made in the early 70s, would download a photo but do not know how?
Rich
I need information on a shaftesbury les paul bass. It is black, with gold coloured bridge, machine heads and pickups.
can any one tell me where I can get parts for a Morris Bass ?
The subject heading says it all… does anyone have one they’d like to part with… I will settle for a double-neck, or a six string, as well…
With regards to Marty Willson-Piper and Mike Rutherford…
Steve R
PAUL!!!! YES… YES… How do I get in touch with you… looks like you’re in NEW SOUTH WALES (how appropriate… THE CHURCH are my "Elvis", so if I can get a Shergold from Australia, that would be fabulous!!!!)…
What are you asking for it? I sure hope you haven’t sold it!!!!!
Please respond… sorry it took so long for me to respond, but I was hoping to get a direct email from you…
Contact me soon!!!! PLEASE

I am about to put a shergold 12 string on ebay as I am having a clear out. Totally original with usual laquer cracking to the front.nothing is missing as far as I can tell and all pick ups work , but could do with a good set up from a decent luthier. If any interest then reply at your leisure.
I am based in uk

Are you still there… not sure if my follow-ups got overlooked so I thought I’d try again… did you sell the SHERGOLD 6 string… please let me know the status… if not, let’s make a deal…
Steve R
PAUL… I’m not sure if the other follow-up will reach you, so I thought I’d follow-up on your message too…
YES… let’s talk about the SHERGOLD 6 string… (I take it a 12 is probably even more rare…)…
I’ll ask the usual questions: is it in good condition… how much do you want, etc., etc.
As I said in my other message, it sounds as if you’re in New South Wales… again, The Church is my prime influence (insurmountable, really), so to purchase a Shergold from someone in Australia would be a dream come true!!!!!
Please respond… I’m in California, USA…
Thanks so much for responding initially… hope to hear from you soon…

I have a Shaftesbury Les Paul Gold Top bought around 1971. Gigged for about 20yrs it still looks and plays like new, maybe even better. The sales person where I bought it (Kingfisher in Fleet Hants.) said it was one of a few released before Gibson made them make some changes to the headstock because it was too close to the original, was this true or was it sales pitch? What would todays value be? Any help would be much appreciated

I’ve been looking over the pass years for a replacement for the gold top I dearly loved and missed and should never have sold,if any one knows or has one for sale would they contact me please http://www.TOOREX.com many thanks Bobby

Hi, I can remember the Ned Callen guitars from the early 1970’s and at that time I was one of the few female guitarists playing electric guitar in groups. The Ned Callen guitars I believe were hand made in Ireland, if what I was told at the time is true, and from what I was told then was that because they were handmade each one was individual. For all I know it might be not true, but then again it might, but I would certainly say that if that Ned Callen of your is from the 1970’s then it is likely to be a collector’s item and worth a good few bob, or at least somewhat more than you paid for it back then. I think they are now made or distributed by Shaftesbury.

I am now the proud owner of Shaftesbury 12 String Ricky type, excellent condition perhaps 25 years old, and sounds just as good as they did in the 70s when I always played one. I really missed this guitar even though I have a 12 string Ricky – there’s something just O.K. about the way it plays and sounds. Japanese technology!! or it’s just real cool. Thanks ANDY

I inherited a Blonde Telecaster style Bass, with a rather nice chrome pickguard. Thing is, I have no idea about anything to do with this bass. No history, no knowledge of the company, no ideas of value etc. Essentially I’m just hoping somebody knows anything about telecaster styler basses made by his company. Dates, serial numbers etc.
MADE IN THE LATE 60s EARLY SEVENTIES.
I have a black Shaftesbury LP copy. It is a Rose-Morris sponsored instrument. Stock No 3400. Serial No 20012. Made in Japan. I have had it since the early 80s. It is very heavy. It has also been extensively modified by the previous owner. If you know of a brochure to help me find more info that would be great.
I’d be interested if it has and info on the Shaftesbury copy of the Dan Armstrong plexiglass guitars…
This popular thread has been given its own page : Shaftesbury Les Paul Custom.
Nope! I have a black one. But they are rare.
: Hey! am I the only owner in the world with a Shaftesbury "custom" Les Paul? Mine is a "cherry sunburst". Strangely mine has not got a serial No. at all. So what can anyone make of that? Any info. please would be appreciated.
I have a wonderful Shaftesbury Les Paul Custom, too. It’s black and "lifetime" loan, but I like the sound via an old Vox.
Anybody out there who would sell his Shaftesbury Les Paul??? I would love to have my own….

i also have a shaftesbury, sunburst in excellent condition , any idea of value please anybody
I have owned one since 1982 – it was about ten years old when I bought it. Cherry sunburst, no serial number, gold humbuckers. The guitar sounds just lovely through a Fender Twin, and I often use it for studio work in preference to a Gibson. The arch top isn’t glued to the body like a Gibson LP Custom, so it has a slightly more resonant tone which really comes alive when you crank the volume up and it starts working with the amp. I had it fitted with a Kahler Tremolo – an unusual mod for this type of guitar, but it turned a good guitar into a gem for both gigging and studio work. If you’re gigging with your Shaftesbury, try putting it through a Tom Scholz Rockman X100. Awesome combination!
If anyone has any info on the history of Shaftesbury guitars I’d be very interested to know.
I agree with Patricks comments as I also use mine through a Rockman x100. Fantastic!(watch out for your ears though)
My guitar is the same as Stephens but although I still have the original parts. I have changed the black parts to cream and the knobs to gold as per Gibson Standard.
: i’ve bought a shaftesbury les paul custom off a guy for 50 quid. it has no pick ups, the bridge needs replacing and so do the machine heads. having said that, the guy i’m buying it off is a luthier and has perfectly placed the gisbon custom shop logo on the headstock 😀

Wow I know this thread is old it I e been searching high and low for info about this guitar! I got given a black one about 4 years ago by my dad and a guy has offered me money for it. Has anyone got any idea how much they are worth? I don’t really want to sell it but I might. information would be great thanks if anyone is still out there 🙂
I noticed that my 1970-2 black les paul custom (shaftesbury) is nearly identical to a jedson and an ibanez of the same era, so some of the info on those two may be useful if you are researching your shaftesbury. Key clues for me were arrowhead TRC, rounded fretboard heel, pearloid inlays stop at the 17th fret, “steel adjustable neck”, and three screw pups. All these markers are purportedly Matsumoku traits (I read in a forum comment, so my not be true at all). My guitar has Mighty Mite cream humbuckers otherwise it is original. I would like to get hold of a 3ply black/white/black scratch plate and the black round cover for the back if anyone has either of those, I would very much appreciate if you get in touch. lucrichstep at gmail dot com
i have a black shaftesbury 1970 that needs wiring between pickups and volume buttons. it feels and plays awesome and holds great tune 🙂 give me a fair offer and it’s yours. remember that it is an atique so show me some respect!

I have a few nice Greco Ric copies (360) which are hard to find. They get taken off ebay pretty quickly whenever anyone tries to sell them. They play as well or better than the real thing and they look awesome.

: I had the toughest time trying to find one and eventully i found two–it took me 4 months. Rick copies are extremly hard to come by. I’ve seen two Univox copies, one Ibanez copy and one electra copy on ebay. Within two days of listing on ebay, the Rickenbacker police ended up shutting down the auctions and i ended up with nothing. Rickenbacker is very firm when it comes to copyright proctectin and only ric bass copies you’ll find will be the law suit era ones. I surfed the web for a long time to see any private sales on line or second hand guitar shops. Persistence paid off and I found two.

Did you ever find out as i have one and i want to sell it any idea what its worth??
Hi,
I have a Shaftesbury LP copy which plays quite nicely. I bought it for £125 ages ago with a hard case and a squier practice amp. It is quite a nice guitar although I am contemplating some repairs and would like some advice
i) The guitar can sound a bit lifeless. I am contemplating new pickups – any suggestions as to the mose appropriare replacements.
ii) I think new machine heads are required – the G string in particular goes out of tune the first time you bend it strongly. Also the gold plating has come off most of them.
Again any idea of appropriate replacements.
iii) The jack plate has disintegrated – have ordered a Gibson one as replacement (woooo!) – if it doesn’t fit any idea what would?
Cheers,
Jon

i. The pickups fitted by Rose Morris are actually pretty good – the guitar comes alive at higher volumes once the body starts resonating, especially with its semi-hollow body under the arched LP top (unlike Gibson, Shaftesbury didn’t bond the top). My advice is keep the pickups, but install an active preamp – http://www.guitarfetish.com do an excellent one for LPs. It’s a cheaper option, too.
ii. The problem is more likely to be with the nut – the G string bends over it and gets slightly kinked, and gets stuck. You can tell if this is a problem by listening for high-pitched ‘tink’ sounds coming from the nut when you’re tuning the string up or down. Try putting some graphite into the nut (pencil lead will do), or replacing it with a carbon-fibre nut. I have put a carbon-fibre nut into mine and the tuning is very smooth and precise.
ii(b) If you do need to replace the machine heads you’ll find that you can’t get replica Rose-Morris tuners. You’ll need to fill in the screw holes and install a set of Grovers. Not cheap at £70! Alternatively I still have my old set of Rose Morris tuners which worked fine (although the gold is a bit worn on the buttons) which I would be happy to sell for a tenner. Let me know and I’ll stick them on eBay with a Buy It Now option.
iii Woooo! indeed… it should fit fine, but if it doesn’t then fill the screw holes with a wood filler, leave it a couple of days, then drill 1mm pilot holes and fit the new plate.
Hope that helps!
Patrick
I have a black and gold Shaftesbury LP copy with stock number 3400 and serial number 00680. I have replaced the machine heads and pick-ups. My son now plays it.

: I have recently brought a second hand Shaftesbury LP copy, serial no. 0154018. It has faded ‘gold’finnish components. I have been after one of these for years.
: As a teenager in ’71 I went to a music shop (Bells guitars if I remember)in a town near Newcastle ,Newton Aycliffe .After trying out various guitars the shop assisant said "try this!!"and handed me a tele-thineline copy, a Shaftesbury model, and spent a while raving over what a great guitar it was.!He was right too.
: I heard a band playing around that time, the bass player sported a shaftesbury tele bass copy – good sound also.Ive come across a few ricky copies over the years but the first ive seen of a 2nd hand LP guitar. I also used to have a Shaftesbury guitar cataloge from the early seventies. The guitars were promoted by Geoff Lynne and Roy Wood of the Move with pics of them playing the tele models I think.
: Guitar models featured in this cataloge (wish I still had it )were the LP copy, the tele thinline and matching bass copys, also the Ricky 6 string and a matching bass (not a 4001 copy design)and also a plexi-glass model which has been described by several contributors in mail on here. If I remember the price new was around £60-70 then, and around 1973 I saw some models which were priced new around £90,inc a gold top LP model and a sunburst LP model by then.Yeah -great guitars!! cheers all!.
how much is it worth today?
I too went to the Bells guitar shop in Newton Aycliffe, in August 1971. Tried out various guitars, the assistant said ‘try this!’ – a shaftesbury thin-line tele. fantastic guitar, wonderful to play.Came away with a second-hand commendore guitar for £15…
During a recent move I unearthed my Shaftesbury Les Paul.
I’ve had it from 1976, bought second hand from ABC music when it was in Addlestone. It is stock no:3400, serial no:71665. The gold plating was crap really, but it still plays well, looks good & oh the nostalgia. Would anyone have an idea from the serial number when it might have been manufactured.
Cheers
: i have a black and gold shaftesbury Les Paul that came to me direct via the back door of rose and Morris. i had the choice of the LP or a genuine Fender strat for £30. if only i knew then what i know now. I don’t know or care what its worth, i’d never part with it. One day i’ll treat it to a proper refurb.

I bought it for 35 quid in 1971. its still in its solis case. I also unearthered it after a move. it still looks and plays beautifully with a good tone (if you know you will know what I mean). I don’t play any more. Anyone know what it might be worth to a good owner?
Amigos …
Anyone got (or is aware of) any Lawsuit-era Ricky 4001 / Bass copies available. I’ve been looking around on and off for @ 18 months now – NOTHING available in Ireland.
Thanks much.

Hello all,
My dad has given me an old bass that was sitting gathering dust at his place for years. Its a copy of a Rickenbacker 4001 and says ‘Shaftsbury – made in japan’ where it should say Rickenbacker. I emailed the Sales manager at Andys guitar shop in London for a part ex price and he said between £250 – £400?!?!? I assumed it was worth nearly nothing so I guess he knows something I dont. Anyone know anything??
Cheers, David
Hi David
£250-300 sounds about right, depending on condition. The snag is that the Ibaneze copies were more sought-after in the late 70s / early 80s.
Having said that, a Ricky Copy is something I’d go for myself. So if you’re interested in sellling, please let me know.
Rgds.
