Graham, from what I’ve read about Holdworth, he favors sustain above distortion. I suspect he’s driving the power tubes harder than the pre-amp on his amplifier. This gives you a much smoother saturation with a good amount of sustain. Only thing is you have to drive your amp fairly loud to get this sound. To achieve this at moderate levels, I use a Boss compressor/sustainer with the sustain set at one o’clock and the compression at two o’clock, followed by an Ibanez TS-9 tubescreamer set with its drive set about 9 o’clock for an approximate likeness of his sound. Again, I have my pre-gain volumes lowered while my main volumes are are higher for a cleaner, stronger sound. I’m playing a Les Paul doing this, but I think any guitar with a good humbucker will work fine. I’m not sure if there are any single coils out there that will give you a sound close to his. They would have to be strong. Maybe EMG’s SAs. Hope this helps.

yes i recomend to use a fender amp with a jimi hendrix fuzz wah search around on settigs to find exact tone but it should be close where ever you have the settings already. PS I love the fender hot rod deluxe i have and the jimi hendrix fuzz wah i can’t say enough about it its not the best i’ve heard but for the price you can’t beat it. if you know ant settings for the hot rod deluxe please let me know thanks and enjoy
