This guitar is based on the J-45 folk guitar that singer songwriter Donovan used to create many of his popular hits.

This new Custom Shop signature model follows the specifications found on J-45s from ’60s, complying to Donovan’s preferences. The labels inside the guitar come with the artist’s signature of approval along with a personal letter.

The body of this custom shop guitar follows traditional wood combinations, featuring a Sitka spruce top with mahogany back and sides. Gibson describes the body as “authentic ’60s style radiused”.

The top features a thin nitrocellulose Cherry Sunburst finish that recreates the “textured” appearance of the original. Other aesthetic additions to the body include traditional double ring rosette and multi-ply top/single-ply back bindings.

The neck is made of mahogany, with a modified round profile and a period correct nut width of 1.75″. The headstock shape follows Gibson’s traditional CF-100 with a gold block decal. The guitar has a “belly up” rosewood bridge with adjustable tusq saddle, paired with 3 in-line white button tuners.

The LR Baggs Lyric bridge plate-mounted microphone system adds a useful modern element to the J-45 design. This discreetly installed premium electronic preamp system allows for amplified performance. The ’50s style tortoise pickguard wraps up the guitar’s features.

The MSRP for the new 1965 J-45 The Donovan Model is $2,999. Visit Gibson for more information.

  1. J45 Donovan

I have one of the original models. I bought it new in early 1968 from a shop in Macon, GA. It was priced at $220 and did not include a case. It was hanging from the ceiling with a lot of other new guitars. From the serial number, it was made in 1965. Do you have any further information on this guitar, Gibson told me that their records were lost in a fire and could not help.
