Since 2014 is Gibson’s 120th year, they have decided to introduce a variety of innovative changes to their instrument design, as showcased by 28 new models.

We will be featuring each of the new models as they are released and as updated information becomes available. For now we will touch on the common changes and upgrades that Gibson applied to their 2014 production line as a whole.

The first thing that many will take notice is the availability of new colors and finishes that ranges from satin-smooth to ultra-glossy.

They showed six new finishes on their website but more may soon be available, and that’s excluding the special instrument specific finishes that are available.

Aside from exterior upgrades, Gibson also announced the availability of four new pickups that are said to produce a wider palette of sounds, from sweet whispers to all-out screams. Interestingly, Graph Tech nuts will be more prominent on 2014 models, and the new guitars will be equipped with proprietary strings.

The Gibson Min-ETune mechanical tuner will also be added to more guitars, providing quick and convenient tuning. Finally, the 2014 models will have a new serial numbering system to make it easy to find out the exact model of your guitar, Gibson hopes that this will help their instruments become more collectible.

Steps to improve playability were also taken by the manufacturer. This includes utilizing PLEK technology for precise fingerboard sets, non-slip knobs for accurate control and tweaking and undercut fretboard binding for comfortable playing.

Redesigned strap buttons provide improved guitar stability, while the one-piece fingerboards design helps in both the tone and stability aspect. Another interesting production change is that frets are now Cryogenically treated to improve their lifetime.

Some of the interesting 2014 models include the Les Paul Futura, SG Futura, Thunderbird IV and the Les Paul Peace. Visit Gibson for other details on their upcoming 2014 models.
