I found a martin Stinger ssl-10 in the garbage with fishing line as strings. It looked to be in decent shape so i grabbed it. I’ve ha it sitting around for about a year then my nephew became i tersted in rock music which seems to be rare in 2014, so I told him i would fix the old boy up and put fresh strings on it for him so he can learn guitar. Well, once i cleaned the pots and checked the wiring I strung it up, plugged it in to my carvin V3 amp and WHOA!!!! This thing shreds! The action is great and it sings like Michael jackson after a few cigs!! Now i’m not sure i can part with it. I may be giving him my $700 c1 schecter instead. What a treasure of a find, and it was headed for the dump!! Very well made and it is just an overall great sounding and playing guitar.

I know how you feel. I love the action on my ST2. I have a friend that is very upset though, he says it plays like his $800 telecaster. HAR! I do have some issues with the pups I’m going to change them out with something a little hotter. I was thinking about Duncan lipstick cases.

  7. Hi,
I think you are all onto something and don’t know it. If there is no, or very little info on the Martin Stinger Guitars the readers of this board should start a collection of information. Starting with a wev site of owner picture, models and serial numbers. Then maybe Martin will look a little harder thuough there records that they say they did not keep, RIGHT (martin keeps records on haw often there employees fart), and get you all some information.
I’m looking at a Stinger that I just found today on the internet. I just might need to get it.
BTW, I can’t start such a database, no talent, time, or $$

: I have a stinger guitar but it doesn’t match any of the Martin stingers. It’s got a jackson like headstock with a scorpion. On the body of the scorpion i think is the name but can’t tell, and on the tail it says "Stinger" and then goes into a sort of lightning bolt. The guitar is 22 frets, hum at the bridge and single at the neck in a slant position (like a strat bridge pickup), and i believe the neck is 1 11/16ths inch at the nut. The bridge is a Floyd Rose Liscensed.

yes i have been researching these upon request from my freind who has one of these.nothing found so far but this sounds like the one.not a bad guitar but just dont know what its all about.

I have a black one. Same hardware as mentioned above. Mine has a volume knob, treble knob, and a push/pull split coil knob. As well as the double locking Floyd Rose. And as the commenter above mentioned the neck and headstock are identical or as close as you can get to a Jackson. All my hardware is chrome.

I just purchased an SSX model Stinger from and antique dealer for $150.00. You won’t find much, if any information from C F Martin about these guitars. I found from a Google search that these guitars were made in Korea during the ’80’s, then shipped to Martin for final set-up before being sent out to the dealers.
No product info in flyers or catalogs and yes, they are serialized, but no info was kept for manufacturing records.

          Bob

I know this is an old thread but I m just curious if you found anymore info regarding this guitar? I recently picked up the same model STINGER X14 Telecaster copy. It feels and plays damn good, it has a beautiful maple neck rosewood fingerboard. Cant rave about the body I think its plywood you can see the layers in the right light through the paint. However when I took the neck off of it, the neck pocket looked to be solid wood, I dont know. Its damn ugly black paint red binding red dot inlays on the fingerboard with what appears to be a faded tortoise shell 2 piece pick guard however the small piece surrounding the bridge pickup did not fade and still has the red colour to it, while the large portion surrounding the neck pickup (like a standard tele) has faded brown and white.
Anyways if you have any info on these guitars I would appreciate it if you could let me know more about them
          Thanks

    1. Re: new Stinger Guitar Forum 4-12-2007
      Charlie

I was given a Martin Co, FX3RC Stinger Guitar amp awhile back and I just got around to fixing it. The problem it had was with the main volume control would static out when turning well I replaced it with a new reostat and it seems to have helped but there still is a lot of static but it works very good and is very loud. It has a couple different effects built into it like reverb and chorus and I think a pre-amp? I want to find out how old it is, there is an inspection sticker on the back inside with an inspectors # and what looks to be a date of 6-65 but I don’t know if it could be that old? Any one who has any info? I would like to know about this amp. Thanks, Charlie in Phoenix

: I just setup a forum for Stinger owners on my webspace. We can all work together to catalog, discuss Stinger guitars, since there’s really not much information about them online.

Most amplifier hum is due to a failing input transformer or speaker output choke. I have shielded older tube amplifier wooden chassis with copper tape and had good results. Also I would take a hard look at all components for signs of overheating or some may be of low grade. Capacitors usually fail first. All components degrade after time ussually this takes 30/40 years unless they are low bugdet. If the amplifier does not have a three prong cord then install a heavy gauge cord that grounds the chassis(like a power tool cord). This may do the trick. Make sure to use a plastic cord clamp available at your hardware store. This is a good safe upgrade. If you have a three prong cord ohm check it.

      LaZoRRaZoR

Looks like you have an SSX-10 Style, not 100% but with the triple pickups and what appears to be a 5 position switch that’s what it would be. Value approx 150$ to 300$ depending on demand at the time. Hope this helps.

I called Martin Guitar company to try to get some information on my Stinger, I assumed since I had the serial number I could have Customer Service look it up and give me model, model number, year of manufacture, etc. It turns out that Martin didn’t keep track of the serial numbers.

      Letter from Martin Customer Service:

Thank you for contacting the C.F. Martin Co. Inc.

Martin did not keep record of the serial numbers on the Stinger Series; therefore, the history on this series
is very limited. Here is the information that I have available. In November, 1985 Martin introduced the
Stinger Series solid body electric guitars and Basses. Made in Korea, these guitars became widely
accepted in a short period of time. Stinger, like Sigma, was brought into the Martin factory, inspected,
and set up by C.F. Martin personnel. They were available in a variety of popular styles. There are no
longer stock replacement parts for Stinger Electric Guitars.

I am currently working on a Database of Stinger Guitars serial numbers. It will be web based and will allow users to enter their guitar’s year, model, serial, color and give you the option of uploading an image of your Stinger guitar.

It’s currently under design, but shouldn’t take too long, but if you’d like your information to be entered now please send me the year of manufacture, model, serial number, and a picture if you’d like it to be in the Database also. Email: john at johnbeck dot org

You’ll have to find an old used Stinger or just buy replacement guitar parts for similar guitars. Martin doesn’t have any parts for them.

Hi! A few years ago my mother bought me an electric Martin Stinger (not sure of the type). Anyway, I sold it a few years later for 60$ and all of my friends tell me that I was an idiot and that it was probably worth a lot of money. Is this true?? Are CF Martin Stingers worth a lot of money?? If I were to buy another one, what should I pay? Thanks alot.

Does an know what type of woods were used on the Martin Stinger C.F. Stratocaster style; black, white SSS pickguard and maple neck! I have one, all stock but thinking of customizing! Not sure cause its in pretty good shape for its age. Is it worth anything historically? Thanks!
        Sincerely, Albert

I have just acquired a stinger st2 mine is red with a white pick guard I play it through a fender rocpro 1000 and it is absolutely incredible !

      4. I got a red ST2 from a friend today. The bridge is junk, so I’ll put a Warmoth bridge on it. The back of the headstock is stamped Q C REJECT which means that this thing snuck out of the factory or was pulled out a a dumpster. The only flaw I noticed wrong was a tuner mounted out of whack. It has a single coil neck pup and a humbucker bridge pup and sounds pretty good.

I love my SSL-20. I have had for 16 years. I have played a couple gibsons and fenders, but the stinger is just way easier to play. What a great guitar.

In 1985, coincident with the dramatic increase in quality among Korean manufacturers, Martin unveiled its Stinger line of solidbody electrics made on the peninsula south of the DMZ.

As with most other imported Martin products, Stinger guitars were made in Korea and shipped to the Martin factory for a final inspection and set-up before being sent on to dealers. Essentially, Martin Stingers are well-made entry level guitars pretty much following conventional lines of the marketplace.

Martin never actually produced Stinger catalogs, so a detailed accounting is pretty difficult. However, there were four basic Stinger body styles, a fairly conventional Strat shape, a Strat-style with an arched top, a Tele and a Fender-style bass. These came in a variety of finish and pickup configuration options. Headstocks were a kind of modified Strat-style six-in-line, with a pointed throat and slightly hooked nose, with a painted triangular Stinger logo running under the strings. All had bolt-on maple necks. Guitars had a 25.4” scale, while the basses were 34”ers.

The core of this early Stinger line can be seen in an undated flyer which could be anywhere from around 1986 to ’88. Strat-style guitars included the SWG, SGV and SSX. The arched-top Strats were the SSL-1, SSL-10 and SSL-20. The Tele was the STX, and the basses were the SBX and SBL-10.

The principal difference among the Strats was in finish options. All had 21-fret maple necks, three single-coil pickups, volume and two tone controls, and five-way select. The SWG came in yer basic red or black, with maple ’board and chrome hardware. These had traditional non-locking vibratos. The SGV was offered in red with white graphics. The SSX was the dusey, with purple burst (white outside, purple in center), tiara turquoise, blue pearl, metallic white, black and candy apple red finish options, with… with matching colored maple fingerboard and (that’s and) matching chrome hardware.

Sources other than the flyer do not mention all the fingerboard and hardware color options.°>ÃwŒëu0012
Since few of these show up on the market, I suspect these fancy Stingers are quite rare.

The STX “Tele” was pretty much a copy with a humbucker at the bridge and a single-coil at the neck. This had volume and tone, three-way select and a mini-toggle coil-tap on the ’bucker. Fingerboard was rosewood, while hardware was black chrome. Finish options included cream, metallic red, purple burst and black.
By the Fall of 1988 the Stinger line, as reflected in a November price list, had rearranged slightly. Still around were the SWG ($281), SGV ($294), SSX ($308), and STX ($330) guitars and the SBX ($337) and SBL-10 ($367) basses, the black SSX and SBX now available in lefty versions (add $15). Essentially these were unchanged in options.

New was the SSX-N ($347), basically the three single-coil SSX with an ash body and natural finish, set off with black hardware and a fixed bridge/tail assembly.

The arched top Strats were still available, but now with new names and details. Gone were the one-pickup SSL-1

      1. hi I was wondering how rare the ssL-20 is and
how much it is worth today,i bought it from a friend for fifteen dollars and i started playing and i got ok.when he gave it to me it had a lot of bumps and bruses on it, so to cover that up i was goin to get it profestionally air brushed for free so beforei do this i was asking someone who might know like u so will the price go down in the guitar if i do this and i want to keep this guitar as long as i live so by then i was wondering if the price would be lower then what it would with the original paint thank u and bye

I have a Stinger and I am currently looking to get some more of them. People that think this guitar is not very good are sorely mistaken. It has a sound and a feel that is solid and marvelous. I abuse mine pretty bad and it forgives me every time.

          1. Any chance you’re still looking for Stinger guitars? I have an all original turquoise one that has sat for about 20 years. Oddly, it still sounds great. I’m looking to sell it and was doing some research to see how much to sell for when I came across this old thread on guitarsite.

I have been playing for about 7 years now…. and a stinger was my first electric. I bought it for 130 bucks, and it sounded great. Since then, i have moved on to accoustic and havent really played electric too much. Its still a great guitar… I’m going to replace the pickups and controls… after that it will be like brand new. In my opinion, the stinger is a kick ass guitar for how cheap they are. Let me know if you have any further info on stingers… everybody I’ve talked to puts them down. thanks.

I recently acquired a C.F. Martin Stinger Bass Guitar from a business associate as a bardering arrangement. Excellent condition, black, maple neck, all chrome hardware, dual pickup, volume and tone control, and heavy as hell. I cleaned it up and it looks like new! I’ve had little luck finding info on the internet. The going value seems to be $250 to $400 bucks. Seems like a quality built instrument.

hey man I know what you mean I can’t find any info on it. Mine is a stinger and it says that it was made by CF Martin. Maybe it got a lawsuit by fender cause I know mine has been mistaken as a fender strat before. And I have looked about some other resources and found that CF Martin has made only acoustic guitars, banjos, and mandolins. But since I have living proof that they make electrics I don’t know what to tell you.

          Hi Stinger Owners,

I must agree that the Stinger SSX not only plays as well or better than my Fender Strat, but, sounds and plays much better than all of my guitars. I have a Gibson ES-125, Gibson Les Paul Custom, Fender Jaguar (original, not a re-issue), Two Fender Statacasters, a Samick f-hole double cutaway, and my SXX Stinger for electric guitars. I would put by Stinger up against any name-brand guitar. In fact, I just purchased a Stinger Bass guitar that was modeled after the Fender Jazz Bass. I feel the sound and quality of workmanship for that particular bass also exceeds the Fender model it was based on. Martin Company should stand up for the quality of this all too neglected treasure, the Stinger series guotar. Thanks for Listening, Keith

              Totally bought one for $89.00.
I love it, the action is good, beautiful sound, stays great in tune. The prior owner must have played it to death because some of the frets need to be replaced. But, if you can find one for around 100$ I would get one. I would use this to record but only for certain sounds. I would feel totally comfortable playing live with it, but would only use it for telecaster/strat sounds, or as a solid back up.

Gets a very cool sound with the JCL 1000 (or whatever the marshall number is).

I’ve had a stinger for years and decided to fix it up I just need saddles I took it to guitar center but they said they don’t have the size and don’t know where to look mine is the shark tooth looking neck and it looks more like an ibanez than a strat I’d get the model number but it’s still at guitar center can ya help me out?

Sounds like you guys have something good going on with your Stingers. If C.F. Martin reads all the great comments on this guitar, they may come out with a duplacate and tack a BIG price on it like their old standbys. I play and compose Bluegrass & Country music. I wanted a Martin very much, just couldn’t afford it. I tried a lot of guitars, before buying a Blueridge BR-160. I didn’t go wrong, This Blueridge is sweet. It has great highs and lows, sweet to the ear. Maybe one of these days I’ll have a Martin or another Blueridge. Thank’s Curt

I was given a CF Martin Stinger back around 1986 by my bass player who was later killed. I kept it for sentimental reasons. I ended up routing the guitar and putting in a Seymour Duncan dual-coil humbucker and making an entire new pickguard out of blue mirror plexi-glass. This guitar kicks ass and I use it along side my Gibson Les Paul!

I borrowed my Son-In-Laws Stinger SSX and even though it’s in need of a setup it still plays and sounds great. I agree, C.F. Martin needs to admit that this was their baby, just because it’s not an acoustic is no reason to write off a good sounding guitar. I do have about 6 Martin acoustics including the D-45, also Washburn, Gibson, Rickenbacker and a few others. The only Fender I have is a Dobro and for the price that sounds good. I wish I still had the Strat 12 string I played in the 70s……oh well

      1. Stinger by Martin SSL-20
        dio

My parents bought me a Stinger SSL-20 in the late ’80s as my first electric guitar – I think it was about $300 new. I sold it to an acquaintance in Los Angeles in 2002 for $100. A couple of weeks ago, I came home to find a mysterious, large box on my porch. The dude I sold it to had found a mutual friend of ours, got my address, and sent it back to me as a surprise b/c he doesn’t play it any more. Stoked! I had a pro set up done (b/c I have no clue when it comes to Floyd Rose), and it rips! Great guitars. I found this, if anyone is interested: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/16979-stinger-swg-by-cf-martin-co—-ca-19

No one seems to have mentioned that inspite of the famous name, Martin, and the pretty colors, these were made of plywood and that is why they are so heavy. 😉
