So i should be happy i just spent 100 bucks out the door for this one all original today ? It was only missing the tremolo arm and the string locks at the nut. Slapped some string on it when i got home and it is a beast . Has some crazy tone pots though . I have pics i just dont know how to upload pics on this . But this has been the best info ive found on this thing .
Hi all
Hopefully this will reach the right people.
I have a 69 Dan Armstrong Guitar but need some parts…Knobs, Truss rod cover, pick guard.
Anybody have any spares for these guitars?
Leon – there are two pickguards for sale on ebay at the moment, although one includes the entire electronics assembly and is therefore expensive. The other pickguard has some minor damage around the switch hole and is later than ’69, but it might work for the time being. Knobs come up periodically on ebay as these were also used on the V-4 amps. Hope this is helpful. Rgds, Scott
Hi, in the early 80,s I purchased a Dan Armstrong in west London. It had the original case with METRO sprayed on and a couple of round stickers on each side. Sort of fairy Lord Of The Rings type pictures. The guitar is really early without going up to the loft I think the number is A434D. What is weird however (the guitar is pretty much mint and at some time someone has put schallers on headstock) is that instead of the wood gr an English folk ain finish headstock and pick guard these have been replaced – a really good job with black with a white border. Someone has spent money on these alterations – and no it is a real Dan Armstrong not some Japanese copy – this was not done in somebodys garage. Does any body out their have any leads on this guitar, at first I thought it may have been a prototype, however an English folk type band were around in the 60,s and 70,s the first album goes for around $400 I believe. After 3 albums they went electric and the main man /guitarist was called Duncan and died really young in his early 40’s. The band was called Metro as sprayed on case. Perhaps someone could confirm this as with the black additions it does look really striking and I would love to know the history. Thank you.
Schallers were found on the first couple of years of production. Some of them even split capstan posts. The definitive site for research is http://www.danarmstrong.org/
A434D would place it early in the 1969 production. My 1969/1970 is A1249D Subtract 100 from the number and your 434 is early indeed. Mine has split Schallers. At one point Dan ran out of Schallers, bought a lot of Grovers but hen reverted for a bit to the Schallers about 1970 but eventually later in 1970 went with the Grovers once again. The site discusses all this. I have had 1249 since 1976 and had in hand as a friend of the original owner in 1970.
It is not unusual to see the pickguards replaced, as they often broke at the jack.
I hope you are still enjoying it. They have become scarcer eah year on the market.
Phil – I have a lot of experience in dating original Dan Armstrong guitars. If you send me a couple pics including one of the serial number and headstock/pickups/bridge and the case I can kind of tell you what might be original and what’s changed. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to tell you much about the band name stenciled on the case, but that was certainly very common back in the ’70’s.
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, but thanks for your reply. I shall take some more photos as the ones I had I have sent out. If you could text me on vinylresseeurectionAgmail.com or give me a call won 07982407934 and give me your address I shall happily send you the photos.
Thanks for your e-mail and would really appreciate any info. you could dig up. Mick Jones played a Dan at the Harlsden gigs in 77 but the 10 second footage is so frantic it is not possible to eyeball the scratchboard. it was purchased from The Clash area though.
Thanks again – Philip James. It wants the code in the image to send e-mail but I will have to recheck as this is from memoory and the guitar is in the loft. thanks.A434D

I bought a 69 Dan bass serial #D213A
I don’t know if this is a one off or modified as it has faders for volume/tone controls
She has been abused but plays and sounds great
Anyone have any information on the early models. This dose have the thumb screw for the pickups
And the flat head screws in the bridge
Hi. I picked up an old and very dusty Dan Armstrong guitar by someone’s trash. It’s heavy and it looks like it’s been painted black. Would love to have someone tell me what I have here and if it’s worth restoring. I’ll be happy to send pictures. Thanks in advance for your help.
It may be a Cellulose Butyrate guitar. And there were only 8 made, as I understand. They don’t sound good, but very rare. Might be worth talking to the people who live near where you found it. Certainly can’t hurt. If it’s actually one of those guitars, it’s really sad it was discarded like that. They obviously wouldn’t have known what it’s worth. If it’s wood, it’s not such a big deal.
Hey man. I have a Dan Armstrong 1970’s guitar, not a plexiglass model. It’s thick, made of wood. It originally had a sliding humbucker. If you’ve got one of these. It’s rare and would be worth restoring.
Last year I bought a 70 Dan Armstrong guitar off Ebay. Unfortunately, the neck has a non repairable twist to it (ripped off by another unscrupulous Ebayer!).
I know it’s a long shot but….. Anyone got a vintage neck for sale??? Or even a decent re-issue?
If I can’t find anything I’ll put the parts up for sale soon. Good thing is it comes with the rather rare humbucking pick-up.
No luck. How is the neck in terms of playability?
Can you post pics and give me some idea of how much you want for it?
I would LOVE to be able to play this thing!
Thanks
Ian
the neck is straight, and original, with bolts. it’s pretty beat up, but stock, with tuners. it’s the second version–is that the schaller one? (i haven’t looked at my armstrongs for some time, i’m afraid). i haven’t done any research on value. does anyone have any ideas? [email protected]
bought new in burnaby at axis music .. well used ,scratched and chipped but stock except for 1 head, replaced with same shaler. need atleast 2 grand.also have the armstrong designed ampeg vt22 amp megapower heavy with a roland gm70 midi converter and gm 70 clip on midi pu. offers
i see this was an old post but im looking for a Dan Armstrong neck for my wooden London guitar, and any other spares as ive only got an unused body that id love to build up
cheers Andy
I bought usedDan Armstrong im 1973 serial #A790D her name is crystal and she one great guitar still is But I need a shaller to keep her mint and Ican’t find one I would like to keep her mint. Any ideas? Is this
web site still up $ running e-mail me Ineed 6 strings on her hurry back
I would look on Ebay for an extra tuner. From what I know these were stock items (Schaller at first, then Grovers), so these should be available if you continue looking. You’re more likely to find a complete set for sale rather than just one tuner, but then you’d have plenty of extras.
I have a 1970 dan armstrong plexi guitar with original case. The guitar has some small pits in the plexi that match up with areas where the plush in the case seems to be "flattened". I’m just wondering if the case lining isn’t producing some weak acid that’s causing the pits. Has anyone else noticed the problem?
Has anyone tried to install a Floyd Rose tremolo on a Dan Armstrong Plexi guitar? Would it be possible? I have a 2008 re-issue which feels like it could be fantastic with a tremolo
Hi, i’ve recently bought a 1999 reissue and it came with a single coil carved with the letters MD on it’s back. That makes me a little confused because i thought the MD was a humbucker. Need your light.
I have the MD pickup. It’s a high output P-90 pickup. I confirmed this with Kent Armstrong himself via email. It’s a great pickup..i don’t think the current re-issues have the MD pickup.
Could someone with an original DA please tell me whether the ‘Dan Armstrong – Ampeg’ lettering was set / etched / stamped into the pickguard or was it just something like a transfer that sat on the top of it. Mine doesn’t have any of the lettering left and I’m trying to work out whether it’s an original where the lettering has worn away or a repro.

The Dan Armstrong logo was engraved into the pickguard. I am a 1970 Dan Armstrong Bass original owner.

I just checked my bass that I bought in 1970 and it appears to have been done on an engraving machine. It is very fine and filled in with white paint.

Smooth versus ridged scratchplate / truss rod cover
Rupert
I’ve read in several places that the texture of the scratchplate and truss rod cover changed in the ’69 / ’70 period from smooth to more textured or the other way round (I can’t remember immediately).
Can anyone give me some idea of the difference between the two – was the smooth one absolutely glassy smooth, was the ridged one really obviously so?.
I’ve got what i think is a ’70 DA with Schaller machineheads and having some idea of what the scratchplate should feel like would really help.
Hello Everybody, I’ve got an original 1970 Dan Armstrong Plexi Clear Bass missing its original faux woodgrain truss rod cover. Can anybody out there help me find one? Thanks to all, Dan P.

Hello I have a DA with serial number A2149D – I think it’s either a late 1969 or an early 1970. Is there anyway to tell for sure?
Also, I’m looking to get an idea of what it’s worth – I’ve got the Grover tuners, the rosewood saddle, and the Rock Treble pickup. Guitar has a few scratches but is in VG condition and plays well.
I had to look twice, as I have A1249D. Mine is definitely 1969 and I think close to the end of the year. All came with the rosewood bridges. A 1970 will likely have the slimmer neck and as you have noted, Grovers. another difference is pick guards, rough late, smooth early. Another reason I think mine might be towards the end of 1969 because 1249 has a thick neck, Shaller machines and smooth formica ?8^) I know it is all original, as I knew the specific guitar when new and bought it from the second owner a few years later. I’ll figure you have seen this site but link it for reference here. http://www.danarmstrong.org/
"At some point in late 69 or early 1970 a large shipment of Dan Armstrong clear guitars were being held up at the Ampeg factory as the Shaller company had sent them a large shipment of tuners that were missing the nuts & washers. A call was placed to Shaller, but the missing parts never seemed to arrive. Knowing that customers were waiting for their instruments, Dan said "I just walked acrossed the street to the local Grover dealership and told them we needed a lot of tuners, and that we would continue needing them. They provided us with them, and we just never returned to Shallers."
I’d love to accumulate the rest of the original pickups before finally saying goodbye to it but this may be the year. I have the JT CB and RT.
Ebay is probably the best price guide and condition as well as included accessories will count. someone kept listing an oldie for $4,000 and I don’t see it anymore. I don’t know if it sold or whether he changed his mind. Reviewing the market a couple of years ago, I thought if I put 1249 up on consignment at a local shop, I’d want $3,000 and that’s very nice condition (virtually scratch free), three pickups and the case. I have seen one pickup caseless offerings sell for $2,000 and more quite frequently over the past few years.

Does anybody know if the bridges from the recent reissues would fit one of the original DA guitars? And if so, where I could get one?
Eventually I want to sell it with the proper bridge, but if anyone out there wants to make an offer…
Re: Solution for strengthening weak Dan Armstrong Neck?
Glen C.
You might want to check and see if the truss rod nut has backed off. I can’t imagine so but it may never have been snugged up either. You will be able to tell if it is loose if the washer is floating around (you can rotate it, or it rattles).
Truss rods don’t adjust action, per se but do control stiffness a little bit. What they do mostly is draw back or relax the bow of the neck. If the nut was never tightened, it could make for a sloppy neck. Don’t crank down mercilessly on it. Once snug (back it off first if in doubt)ther will be about 180 degrees (half turn) of adjustment tighter.
I have never heard of refitting the bolts but that might be a re-issue issue. My ’69 has the thicker baseball bat neck and is pretty rigid.
Visit some music shops and chat up the luthier if in doubt or unfamiliar. Again, I’ve bever heard or seen a neck mounting mod mentioned by owners or sellers but i do live under a rock and may be that unfamiliar myself. 😉
Glen A1249D (just happen to be looking for a truss rod nut 10/32 I’m a thinkin’)
: Hi,
: has anybody experienced a lot of neck movement on their Dan Aemstrong plexi guitar?
: I have a smoked finish 1999 re-issue and, like the 1960s originals, it has a weak neck which moves a lot.
: Ampeg product support said the solution was to use smaller bolts, fill up the holes in the neck and bolt it from the outside.
: I’ve seen two techs and they said it’s not the neck joint that is the problem, but the neck itself which is moving.
I have a 2 pickup Londoner wood body guitar. Does anyone have info on whether any of these were actually produced?, or is mine customized? The guy I bought it from claimed that 4 two pickup guitars were made. It has push pull pots for pickup switching and a coil tap switch between the knobs. email me for pics…thanks!…pqk

according to kent armstrong, him and his father only produced about 350 guitars and basses total. not sure about the 2 pu guitar but i own one of only 2 "factory fretless" basses they ever made.
there’s a 1969 Dan Armstrong bass on eBay right now at about $700, it might not have original pickguard, I remember them being brown and saying Ampeg Dan Armstrong on them – the one on ebay has a black pickguard. Any idea what this axe is worth?
I can’t help on the selector switch front, but in answer to your question about whether any of the pre reissue pickups fit the 2007 one – I’ve read several reviews of the reissue that say the pickups aren’t interchangeable.
That should help out – there’s a brochure and a schematic, although it may relate to the original rather than the reissue, but it should give you some idea of what’s going on there.
A few DA guitar questions - serial, pickup, selector switch
Rupert
Hi,
I’ve just managed to get a DA plexi guitar, and hope someone out there can help with a few questions I have:-
1) The serial number is 2703 – can anyone give me an idea as to likely date of manufacture (the guitar still has the Schaller tuners and smooth Formica scratchplate and headstock)
2) The switch only has two settings, one of which seems to just cut the signal from the pickups, like a kill switch. Does anyone else’s do this or is it (as I suspect) a later ‘modification’.
3) One of the pickups I got seems to have been cast in resin, and has a sticker on the bottom that says ‘Kent Armstrong’ and ‘Rock Treble’ on it, as well as having RT scratched in to the base. As I don’t think the reissue pickups would work with an original guitar was this a pickup made for the guitar in the years in between the original guitars being made and the reisssues?
I recently bought a Dan Armstrong Londoner on eBay. It was not working. The first repair man got it to make some sound but thought the pick up needed rewinding. I took the guitar back and gave it to my tech of 20 years. He is looking for schematics to put the guitar back to orginal specs. He thought maybe there was a pre amp in it? Any thoughts. Any spare parts? Help. I have been after this guitar for 10 years.
Thanks for anyones help.
Michael
I have a working Woody long bass version with a neck break.
You could buy it and between the two you can swap out parts intil you track down the failed component. Then you can either part it out, sell as is or have the neck repaired and then you’ll have TWO!
You already know this bass is rarer than hens teeth.
I already have a buyer lined up, but thought I’d give you a chance since you have been waiting ten years. Also good to share what you’ve learned about this model. Info is scare and not a single photo yet in a year of searching.
Lucky whats up it your old pal chris stanco I Have a late 60 Black dan proto 6 string for sale very bizzzare appointments string threw tuneomatic all 100% stock Blk guard Blk single ply matching head stock Vol Tone no swich
and a couple wierd pu,s(323)945-2247
I was offered a lot of money for it from a guitar broker but wasn’t too keen about paying my own shipping and waiting to get paid and maybe low-balled after it was in his hands.
So it’s sat all packed up in my garage for the last four years.
I have a couple offers at around $500 but most interested in passing this onto someone that has been looking/waiting for one for a long time and will appreciate this bass when they get around to having it repaired correctly.
A player, not a collector. I would possibly trade for some kind of guitar but I don’t play bass.
Get in touch or leave a message here and I’ll get back to you.
I’ll post an ad on talkbass.com and probably guitar museum if you want to track it down.

: : can somone tell me how many pickups were made for the dan armstrong and what the letters in the back mean?
Answer:If no-one has responded yet, I think I can help. Either seven or eight p/u’s for the Dan Armstrong six strings,( the originals, have no idea about any re-issues or the myriad copies) depending on who you talk to.Single coils are: Rock Treble(RT),Rock Bass(RB),Country Treble(CT),Country Bass(CB),Jazz Treble(JT),Jazz Bass(JB).There was a humbucking p/u(double-bar) introduced at a little later time in the instrument’s production run. Furthermore, some people claim that there was an improved version of the humbucker developed by Dan and his son at a later date, exactly when and if this happened(and what letter markings it may contain) I do not know.I have an early D/A and have managed to acquire the CB, RT, and Humbucking p/u’s. For my money the brightest and hottest of them is the Rock Treble, tho’ the Humbucker is certainly louder, heavier and has greater sustain.Hope this helps.
I have a bass with a missing knob. Also the pickguard is cracked and I want to restore it before I return it to the guy who lent it to me 30 years ago! Any parts, tips, leads, sources?
: I am looking for original 60s Dan Armstrong pickups besides CB.
Very occasionally seen on Ebay but the oldsters are getting tough to find. I have a CB, RT and JT but they have #1249 attached and cased. I honestly wish I had them all, to round things out before this one finally goes. This may be the year it sells.
Got one of these – first DA I’ve held since I looked over an original back in the late ’70s. So far, I like it a lot. The action is nice and low, it came strung with .009 strings like I prefer, and it sounds GREAT through my 100W 112 combo. Took me a while to find the "Made in Japan" stamp – both it and the serial number are on opposite sides of the base of the neck. Don’t know about the first reissues, but these appear to have the original fatter neck profile. I even like the new bridge – after I’d had it a week I started to get a bit of buzz out of the 1st string. I simply removed the saddle and shimmed it with a bit of aluminum foil. That’s working like a champ. The more I play it, the more I like it…would like to try the thinner neck, though. Just to compare. So far, so good…
I have what I believe is a DA Clear Body Bass,Serial #D1055A. There is no other identification. Can anyone help me out with the model year, a friend told me he thinks a ’69? 24 fret neck?

And the flat head screws in the bridge
That was MY Bass!!! My father gave it to me around 69 or 70.
When I moved from New York to Anaheim CA I had my Friend, George Cole, install the Slide Pots.
Bernardo Rico installed NEW Frets and the Mother of Pearl Fret Inlays.
It was Stolen out of my VW Bug in Anaheim in 1972. I called the Police but the told me “it’s probably in Mexico by Now!”
Imagine my SHOCK when I saw it again!!!
The SAME Serial Number
The SAME Slide Pots
The SAME Enlarged Fret Markers
it’s SAD that someone dropped it and Cracked the Lucite!!!

Hello – anyone interested in contributing to a Dan Armstrong archive, please contact me at [email protected], THX
Contact me at [email protected] for info on your Dan Armstrong, THX.
Thanks
any luck finding a neck?
i have one in my collection somewhere
cheers
bc
[email protected]
cheers
Very interested. I have no idea what the value might be.

web site still up $ running e-mail me Ineed 6 strings on her hurry back
I would look on Ebay for an extra tuner. From what I know these were stock items (Schaller at first, then Grovers), so these should be available if you continue looking. You’re more likely to find a complete set for sale rather than just one tuner, but then you’d have plenty of extras.
I’ve always been a huge Ampeg fan, but I need to consolidate my collection
I just listed this on eBay:

I have an all original dan armstrong fretless bass in excellent condition with original case, paperworks etc. What kind of sale value does it have?
I have a 1970 dan armstrong plexi guitar with original case. The guitar has some small pits in the plexi that match up with areas where the plush in the case seems to be "flattened". I’m just wondering if the case lining isn’t producing some weak acid that’s causing the pits. Has anyone else noticed the problem?
Hi
Has anyone tried to install a Floyd Rose tremolo on a Dan Armstrong Plexi guitar? Would it be possible? I have a 2008 re-issue which feels like it could be fantastic with a tremolo

hello,
do you still have the DA plexi gutar for sale? im interersted in buying it
Hi, i’ve recently bought a 1999 reissue and it came with a single coil carved with the letters MD on it’s back. That makes me a little confused because i thought the MD was a humbucker. Need your light.
Hi
I have the MD pickup. It’s a high output P-90 pickup. I confirmed this with Kent Armstrong himself via email. It’s a great pickup..i don’t think the current re-issues have the MD pickup.
Looking for a pickguard and grover tuners for a 71′ Dan Armstrong.
THanks,

Hi,
I’m in need of one (1) Dan Armstrong knob for my old Ampeg V4-B head.
Help!
How perfect a condition does the knob have to be..I have two that are 80/85%.
Thanks
Rupert

I just checked my bass that I bought in 1970 and it appears to have been done on an engraving machine. It is very fine and filled in with white paint.

Many thanks,

Do you need the earlier model black plastic thumbrest or the later rosewood type?
I am looking for a volume/tone knob for a DA Plexi Guitar. Possibly a new pickguard too…
I’ve got knobs: original 1969 ones. Email me: [email protected]
Do you still have the ’69 knobs??? I need a set desperately! And a formica pickguard too!
Cheers
Rupert

Thanks!

Hi,
has anybody experienced a lot of neck movement on their Dan Aemstrong plexi guitar?
I have a smoked finish 1999 re-issue and, like the 1960s originals, it has a weak neck which moves a lot.
Ampeg product support said the solution was to use smaller bolts, fill up the holes in the neck and bolt it from the outside.
I’ve seen two techs and they said it’s not the neck joint that is the problem, but the neck itself which is moving.
Any ideas on how to strengthen the neck?
Luca

according to kent armstrong, him and his father only produced about 350 guitars and basses total. not sure about the 2 pu guitar but i own one of only 2 "factory fretless" basses they ever made.
Anybody have an idea of what the value range on a mahogany Londoner is?
Thanks,

there’s a 1969 Dan Armstrong bass on eBay right now at about $700, it might not have original pickguard, I remember them being brown and saying Ampeg Dan Armstrong on them – the one on ebay has a black pickguard. Any idea what this axe is worth?
Hey Guys,
The serial # on my bass is D2151A. I’m wanting to sell it, so I’d like to know a little more about its age and value. Thanks in advance!

Hello all! I just bought a 2007 Ada6 reissue that is in need of a pickup selector switch. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Also, are there schematics for this guitar online somewhere?
And lastly, there were quite a few pickups made over the years, do any of the previous pickups fit the 2007 reissue, and if so, which ones?
Thanks!!! –Steev
Kent Armstrong has some posts further down the list here. He mentions pickups and I believe was involved in the last re-issue build.
Might be worth dropping him a line.
I know this is an old topic, relatively speaking.

I can’t help on the selector switch front, but in answer to your question about whether any of the pre reissue pickups fit the 2007 one – I’ve read several reviews of the reissue that say the pickups aren’t interchangeable.
As for schematics try this page:-
http://members.aol.com/bluemuse/ampeg.html
That should help out – there’s a brochure and a schematic, although it may relate to the original rather than the reissue, but it should give you some idea of what’s going on there.

Hi,
I’ve just managed to get a DA plexi guitar, and hope someone out there can help with a few questions I have:-
1) The serial number is 2703 – can anyone give me an idea as to likely date of manufacture (the guitar still has the Schaller tuners and smooth Formica scratchplate and headstock)
Thanks for any help you can give.
Rupert
I recently bought a Dan Armstrong Londoner on eBay. It was not working. The first repair man got it to make some sound but thought the pick up needed rewinding. I took the guitar back and gave it to my tech of 20 years. He is looking for schematics to put the guitar back to orginal specs. He thought maybe there was a pre amp in it? Any thoughts. Any spare parts? Help. I have been after this guitar for 10 years.
Thanks for anyones help.

I’m actually the guy who was selling this guitar.
Thanks for stopping by.

If it’s still available, I’ve been looking for one since ’98 and I’d like to talk to you.
Thanks!
