Yeah, I marvel at the prices some people are prepared to pay for old stuff. When ah were a lad… anything half decent was completely unaffordable… way out of the range of ordinary mortals at the time. My first guitar was a Broadway, a piece of thoroughly dreadful shite which was barely playable. The cheapest Chinese plank available nowadays is streets ahead.

    On popping capacitors….

Me and my band were playing a Saturday night town hall gig back in about 1972 and we came off for a midway break, letting some other local lads fill in using our equipment. Back in those days we improvised everything, so my amp (a ghastly 50w solid state thing) was fed through a crossover and into a selection of speakers, high frequencies to the little ones, low to the big. After about 10mins of these other lads’ playing, the crossover started to smoke profusely. I was in amongst the crowd and was having a good cackle to myself because I new exactly what the problem was… the crossover wasn’t high enough rated to take the power. The guitarist went rigid, but continued to play with his eyes fixed on the little box on the floor. Shortly afterwards, BANG!, followed by silence in the guitar department. I went on stage and hastily rewired the speakers excluding the now-knackered crossover.

    Ah, memories!

    Howdy.

Jedson was a superbudget brand from the late sixties and early seventies, competing with the likes of the “Top Twenty” range which were sold by Woolworths at the time. I remember them well, because the band I played in at the time (yes, I am that old…!) had a second guitarist who played one. Right now, these brands are worth next to nothing (certainly sub-£100/130euro) and are likely to stay that way unless somebody famous starts to use one. The stuff that’s being churned out of China nowadays is better imo.

To me, Paco de Lucia is the best in any genre. For those who don’t know, he’s a flamenco guitarist, and I can’t think of anybody alive or dead who has bettered him. Right-click and “save as” this link to have a listen if you’re interested.

I was lucky enough to see him playing this one (note perfect) about 15 years ago. Made me feel like burning my guitar!!

Kawai are a Japanese manufacturer primarily of keyboard instruments, although they did manufacture limited quantities of guitars in the early 80s, which weren’t a great success. They are quite rare now, though so worth hanging on to. I’d like to get my hands on an Aquarius..

    Hi there.

The G2 is definitely sturdier, no question about it. I havent had any problems with the case of the 505ii either – it seems to be made of pretty tough stuff. I wouldnt be afraid to use either for live use, and the 505ii can be got so cheaply now that a second one would be easily affordable.

Peavey Bravo. I love it… more gain than you’ll ever need, and it’s 25w. Hard to find, but usually cheap.

This is my personal favourite at the moment…

I owned a Broadway in the early 70s and it was a piece of worthless shite. No truss rod, inaccurate fretting hence no possibility of correct intonation or decent action. Only has value for hanging on the wall.

Actually, reading your post again, it wouldn’t do because you say want a combo with a distortion channel. The Bandit is a really good one and easy to get cheaply on the s/h market.

If it’s just backup you’re after, you could do worse than the Crate CPB150…

    http://www.thomann.de/gb/crate_cpb150_powerblock.htm

..which is a tiny solid-state non-channel switching stereo/mono amp. Useful if you get most of your sounds from effects pedals rather than channel switching. You’d probably want a compact cab to go with it, but you could just take it to gigs as backup for your main amp.

To me, pickups routed into holes from the front without mounting rings or scratchplates look really, really naff. Pointy headstocks look totally out of place unless the guitar is of a generally pointy design. This kind of thing…

… simply deserves the Jimi Hendrix on-stage burning treatment!!

I don’t think he does shift them – not very often at least. If you check out his completed listings he sells a few knobs, scratchplates etc every few days, but very rarely a guitar. I reckon he buys hard to shift items at very low prices and then just waits until the price comes up to make them sellable.

I like the idea of the Tokai Talbo Woody too, but they are incredibly hard to find.
