does the situation ever arrise that one might want to have several different preamps into one set cabinet of choice? I’m assuming the answer is yes. But moreover, does the rack mounted preamps provide the opportunity to switch preamps via foot switch, or something? Obviously if one were to use any solid state (or even valve) rack amp, it wouldn’t matter particularily which one someone used, but if someone had multiple preamps, the sound could be altered based on settings/design/etc…

The reason this subject comes into play in my mind, is that I listen to many bands who do not use just a standard amp and cabinet for their set. For example, the guitar or bass sound for Nine Inch Nails is very different from song to song. On stage, they do not even have amplifiers, except for the guitarist, who uses a cabinet (no amp head tho) onstage for feedback effects. The rest is all processed through racks, and their stage monitors provide their foldback, rather than a giant marshall or ampeg stack situated behind them.

I guess the question I’m asking, after all that… is… does they use multiple preamps (some are midi, probably, and some solid state, some valve, etc…) to achieve different songs per song, and is there a way of changing the source live, via a stomp box, or somehting.
Say song 5 in the set requires a midi controlled preamp, which plays sounds created by some computer offstage (or something). Would the guitarist have control over this, or am I starting to get into big bucks and big time professionalism, with stage techs, etc…

Does a rack mount allow me the option of addition to new sounds/presets… or is the convenience merely in size and weight?

Finally got a chance to look at that Jim Reed site. For some reason, the last little while (after you sent me the link) i couldn’t get into it, and find the BE4 or 5. I just cruised back to this forum, and thought i’d try again.

I must say, its a beautiful bass. Actaully its very similar to the Washburn T24, as far as looks go. But that could be it. I’ve found myself looking closely at that bass recently, also. The double J pickups in the T24 are a bit of a worry though.

The Jim Reed BE4 looks like a jem though, and the right types of pups on it. Course, you mentioned the Kramers were a bit of a set back. I know vertually nothing about kramer pups (actually, i know little about pickups in general), so i’d probably be unaware of their flaws. But for information sake, what kind (or kinds) would YOU suggest replacing them (or one) with instead. What are the disadvantages of the Kramers.

    (sorry more questions to come:)

Also, can you comment on the playability/action on it? I know we’ve talked about keeping the low end blues/jazz tone, which I want… but i find myself in the annoying position of wanting that AND fast action. Will I be able to play 16th’s at 120bpm, (or w/e our last rediculous song requires) on it? So many basses I’ve played just can’t seem to handle the speed without the fret noise. (Maybe im just a lousy player, who knows)

Anyway, NICE!!!! looking bass, and I would like to know more! 😀

    Wow.
Thank you that was amazing. I can tell you love this stuff, and know it like the back of your hand, which is awsome.

Im gonna have to read that through a couple more times, but that pretty much answered everything i’ve wanted to know up to this point about that. So thanks!

    thanks 1bass

Didn’t expect an answer from you, but you seem to be everywhere. And you really know you stuff. Awsome.

All that stuff is extremely interesting, and i’ve been learning all that as much as possible. I was right in my initial thought that as long as the impedence doesn’t drop below the amps, any cab will be fine. But i figured a second, more educated opinion would be helpful.

I’ve got the math pretty much worked out for any situtation, except one, where I would (by some chance) happen to have more than one cabinet, and they have different ohm ratings.

For example, my current bass amp, is a 2 ohm head, with a built in 4ohm speaker. (we’ve talked about it before of course).
The way i figured it works, is if i wanted to extend it (which I do), i would idealy add a single 4ohm cabinet, OR two 8ohm cabinets.
The two 4ohm cabs (the one already in it, and the ext.) would give me 2ohm, and I would by maximizing power without dropping below minimum.
The two 8hm cabs on top of the 4ohm cab would essentially be the same thing mathematically in the end.

But say I want a single extention cabinet now, and will get a second later on. I can’t figure if i can add a single 8ohm to my 4ohm, and 2 ohm head, without dropping below, or if I have to get a 4ohm first, and then sell it for 2 8’s later on down the road. I just can’t figure out the math. O
r say in an extreme case (and purely just to solve this problem, and not in real life) I have a the original 4ohm speaker, a 4ohm extention, and two 8ohm extentions, how do I figure out the minimum impedence?

I guess i just can’t get the math for more than 2 cabinets.

Sorry, my mistake. It’s a 4×12 AVT, and AVT head (not SVT)

    Thats what I think.

4000 in english dollars. ouch. We’re talkin in the 10’s of thousands in Canada. Sorry, but no deal.

(You know what they say about bassists tho, they are infact the smartest and best musicians of the band. They dont get enough credit. The fact of the matter is, people who dont want to play bass, dont want to because they want to be “up front”. Any good bassist knows that he/she is essential, and willing to be that backbone to make the music live. Screw the spotlight. Of course, any good bassist should also know he/she can be in the spotlight if so chooses.)

In regards to Ritter… congrats to them for making possibly the most insane instruments I’ve seen. Unless you know of anyhting that’s worse.

That story made my day. I would have loved to have seen that in person!

I definately didn’t take you’re description of the 15incher as a dis to it. But I’m definately pretty certain now that i dont want 2 15’s. I did some looking into on yorkville, and they have a pretty wide selection of cabinets, and arrangements. So it’s looking good. I’d still need to experiment with other brands though.

I’m starting to get some peaks of interest in hybrid amps, although, I tend to be a bit traditional. (I still think vinyl sounds better than cd’s, etc…) So I tend to want to go for the heavy tub/”valve” amps. And it’s true. So many bass players complain about their head being so heavy (I think the comlaints are actually just for bragging purposes), and lug around a double stack of 8 x 10’s or soemthing rediculous. Again, I think it’s the bassist mentality to has the biggest guns.

I quickly realized my error, after soon refreshing my memory of the Ampeg SVT not being a tube amp. I was confusing the name with th B15, or B25’s, etc etc… I’m glad we’re on the same page with that though. I’ve never really heard to them being called Valve tho, and when i did, i just never put 2 and 2 together. Maybe i dont get out much.

Anyway, I loved your description of the 15″ just moving air. VERY true, and well put. Thats kind of the impression I get.
I play in drop D also. And have considered a 5 string soon. As you can imagine, my Amp struggles. It’s just a shame i didn’t know anyhting when I bought it.

I’m looking forward to hearing what others have to say also.

    Fantastic!

I’m certainly fond of the idea, also, of mixing the thumpy (sometimes muffled ufortunately) sound of a single 15 inch woofer, with the clarity and precision of, say a 4 x10 cabinet. Kind of the best of both worlds, in my opinion. Of course my opinion is based a lot on assumption, and not so much from experience. Only going based on my interpretation of what I think these amps may sound like.
I do know, my sound is severely lacking that sort of trumpety, horn like sound to it. It’s kind of like having too much low end rumble, mixed with too much high frequency snap. Not so much the midrange eq either. It’s part my bass, and definately a lot my amp. Hense, why i definately dont want to add another 15 inch speaker. It’d just be the exact same undesirable sound but louder. Hah!

Out of curiousity, since I have no experience with them, what could you say the difference is between tube and valve? (valve and tube isn’t the same thing right?.lol), mechanically, and acoustically. …Just on a side note…

SICK. Yeah black is definately best.

I found those audio clips. Same deal. The recording quality was shit, and didn’t give me a good enough idea what it sounds like. But still helpful.

And yah, the ebony artist is the way to go.

    Very true indeed.

Even finding a reliable source of information on this topic has been a bit of a nightmare. I’m glad I’ve found this site, tho i get the impression there arn’t a lot of people involved in this one? Either way, I’ve gotten a start on this mission at least. The right information is coming gradually.

Thanks for all your help so far.

The last review i read about washburns, were that they did not make great rock, progressive rock, metal, etc… music, but more in the jazz and blues region.
Of course everyone has their own opinions about what sounds good for rock music. But if he was right, then it doesn’t sound like the bass for me. (Not that i have anything against jazz, of course)
Could just be the pickups though.

What’s the verdict on dimarzio? if you’re familiar.
They have a great system on their website, to choose appropriate pickups based on the style sound you’re looking for.

Well, in that case that’s even better.
I feared you were being discrete, in attempt to not mess around with the sponsors (which is probably somewhat true anyway).

Could you maybe give me an idea of their tone, sound, playability? Specifically the Taurus T24.
I’ve been looking for Ash, Maple, Walnut, or Mahogony body, the same scale, and look that this bass has.

I’ve never played one, so I dont know how it sounds. I’m looking for a punchy (but not twangy) low end, progressive rock thump. Low and sustained, but not ringing and droany. Definition in plucks, but not with too much treble, or “tone”.
Something a Wal or Alembic would create. And, yes I know you can’t really get an alembic sound or wal sound with anything accept and alembic or wal, but I want somehting that fits into that category of sound. I also need fast action.

Sounds I dont want: Fender Jazz, Music Man Stingray…

Sounds I like: Gibson RD Artist, Alembic, Wal…

This is for anyone who reads this, who can give me some insight.

    Thanks!!!
