    Ah…..yes……

And that is why a thread on “ugly guitars” is really quite meaningless, isn’t it? After all, if SOMEONE didn’t like it, no one would make it.

Can you believe someone would really advertise a guitar this ugly?

Just a quick read-through leads me to believe that it’s a con to get you to buy some simple thing you already have, or don’t need.

But, hey, I’ve been described as the guy with the highest sales resistance in America.

OK, like, I know this is really obvious, but you have to rule out every possibility before you get too concerned.

Did you try changing the cord?

I’m guessing anyone with near-normal fingers can find a guitar that would have plenty of spacing for their fingers. The width of fretboards, after all, has a great deal of variance between brands and even models within brands.

I think in this case it would have to be the anti-polyester crowd.

When I was a teacher, the “crushed velvet” formal dress was popular at the proms, etc. I had several girls in tears when I asked them if they knew how many baby velours had to be killed to make their dress.

OK, here’s a tangent that actually comes back around!

I once heard an animal expert asked whether dogs or cats were more intelligent. He said the question made absolutely no sense, since all we can do is judge them by human standards, and neither are smart enough to be a human under any condition. What they ARE is just smart enough to do what they do, which is to be a cat or a dog. And they are perfectly intelligent enough to do that.

So, going by that roundabout little route, we can assume that Tony is a good enough guitar player to be a politician…and no better. If he were good enough to be a rock star, he’d be a rock star! And, of course, that’s the truth about all politicians, be it Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, or even the local school board chairman. They are usually best at being a politician, and nothing else, and even that for only a short span of time, when their talents and the public’s needs coincide with their skills. When that coincidence ends, they usually prove that they were never really cut out to be anything else, either.

Depends a lot on what you expect to do, how you expect to treat it, etc. My favorite guitar to just practice with is a First Act (Wal-Mart) I got for $11 on e-bay.

You can get a lot of decent starter guitars for $200 or less. SX and Jay Tursers come to mind.

But if you want a quality guitar that will last and will still be worth something 5 years from now, find the cheapest American-made Fender Strat. They almost never go under $500, no matter how long you keep them.

Call me Mike. “mrblanche” is just my initials and last name. Mister is too formal, mister!

What we would really need is some way to “capture” the signal without it being affected by an amplifier, and then analyze it in something like the machine the CIA uses to analyze voices. It can show the huge differences between the best of mimics and the subject of their mimicry, analyzing overtones, hidden frequencies, etc. Wouldn’t that be fun?

I can just imagine what sort of pictures that name may conjure up for you.

However, it should be noted that the “18-speed tranny” is considered to be the “ultimate truck transmission” in the tractor/trailer market. Reading the track names on those albums, somehow I doubt that’s what their double or triple entendre was aimed at.

I wouldn’t use ANYTHING, not even water, on a finish that had any cracks or crazing. You don’t want to get anything under that finish.

And yes, I really WOULD rather watch paint dry than…oh, say, watch golf or basketball on TV, for example.

I actually sprayed nc lacquer for five years, many years ago, so I’m pretty confident rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) would not damage it, especially if you don’t go crazy with rubbing it. I would try it on a hidden spot, probably, but I’ve never know alcohol to hurt it. For that matter, neither would mineral spirits (what we commonly call paint thinner or turpentine). Lacquer is pretty impervious to that. I would shy away from denatured alcohol, lacquer thinner, and sunlight.

I sprayed all that time without a mask, and I’ve expected to die young from it for a long time. I’d say it’s getting well past young, and middle age is on the downhill run, so maybe the stuff isn’t all that bad, after all. I DO love the smell of lacquer, and I can put a piano finish on anything.

By the way, you know the big advantage of lacquer? You can get a great finish with it, even using really lousy equipment, because you have to rub it out no matter what. Also, any subsequent coat actually dissolves into the previous coats, so it builds up a thick “build.” You could get a good finish using a windex bottle for a sprayer…if the lacquer didn’t dissolve the bottle!

If you do a google search on the brand, you’ll find a number of hits, and there’s even a yairi forum on Yahoo.

The smell of cigaret smoke is contained in an oil that is carried in the air and deposited on surfaces. Once it gets inside any cavity, it’s going to be there for a long time. Also, it soaks into any little crevice. Believe it or not, it’s on your wound strings, and the only way to really get it out is to change strings.

A solution of alcohol (isopropyl) will get a lot of it out, and since the alcohol evaporates fast, you’ll smell the smoke really strongly for a few minutes.

Febreze may kill it in your case, but it WILL come back, probably.

I suspect most of the “tone” is how a guitarist sets up his amplifier, after he’s chosen a guitar with electronics to suit his taste.

I read Santana’s interview saying that PRS guitars had no “bottom” to their tone. Maybe his ears are better than mine. Well, that would be a safe bet, wouldn’t it?
