Thanks for listening & for the reply Lee. 😀

All the songs are covers, and all versions were recorded live at either this party we do every year in a big ol’ field or at a bar (we don’t do any studio stuff being that it’s a cover band). Everything regarding the jams (like in Bathtub) and solos are made up on the spot – we literally have no idea where it’s going to go once we get into it. We try to do it differently every time out for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that we find it more fun & challenging that way. It gives us a chance to shoot for the moon and go places we’ve never been, though sometimes you inevitably get into a place you don’t want to be in . But that’s the beauty of live music. You can fly as high as the stars or fall flat on your face. It’s real.

Drifting is by Trey Anastasio (former Phish frontman) and Bathtub Gin is by Phish as well, and those are the only 2 songs I am singing lead on; the other guys take the other 3 songs.

PS – you guys have seen the old U.S. tv show “Name That Tune”, I assume? (forgive me if this program originated elsewhere….I have only seen it on U.S. tv…..) But as for our previous aformentioned band, it made me think of that show:

Lee: “Bob, I can name that band in 1……2……3……clues!” etc. etc. etc.

Michael: “Bob, I can name that band in 6 clues! (with a lil’ help from some pics)”

Good show, anyways. I miss it, even though it was before my time. I used to watch the re-runs.

Sorry, back to our regularly scheduled program….

So I can assume you guys finally see all the “can you GUESS WHO it is now?” references??? Geez, and to think, I thought you’d get it in the first clue or two! I hope I didn’t set the bar too high because I think I got lucky….I don’t think I’m as good at this game as y’all are; I was having a hard time at some of the previous bands/artists. “Guess” those clues were harder than I thought…

So what gave it away? Was it the pics? or the final Canadian #1 hit clue?

Well, it was fun anyways. Who’s next?

    Here’s a real pic ^

And for my FINAL clue (all but giving it away):

    CLUE #6:

They were the first Canadian rock group to have a #1 hit in the U.S.

Now go ahead….search your search engines and cheat!…..hell, at this point, it may be your only hope! You guys are gonna die when you find out who it is and how I’ve spelled it out for ya. 😆

Lee, you are painstakingly close at this point. I think the only group you’ve left out is the one that is the answer to this question. You really do need to put these clues together though, because I think you already know it if you do. I’ve basically written it into the clues for you; you’ll be kicking yourself once you see it:

    [code:1]CLUE #1:

This group, originally formed in 1960, was one of the first to establish a major successful following in their own country while still residing there. You know them by their more popular name, which they eventually were forced to switch to shortly after their first hit (a cover song, btw), which made it to #1 in their country.

    CLUE #2:

Their immediate follow-ups to their first hit were met with major success in their country, but with little success elsewhere. Remember when I told you you know them by their later, more popular name? Well, that popular name became permanant in 1965 when the person for whom the band was originally named for left the band shortly after their new keyboardist and lead vocalist arrived (sorry, can’t give away the year yet).

    CLUE #3:

This new keyboardist and the group’s guitatrist became the bands main composers until lifestyle differences led the guitarist to leave the group during their unfinished 1970 album, and he subsequently formed another band, which eventually evolved into a supergroup (which I can’t name).

    CLUE #4:

Remember, their first #1 hit was only a #1 in their country (not the UK, btw). And they only had one #1 in the U.S., which was famously covered/remade a few years back (more like 10 years back, I think).

So….those are some good clues. Can you guess who it is now?

    CLUE #5:

In 1965, when their first hit (a cover) went #1 in their country, it went to #22 in the U.S., but their first U.S. top 10 didn’t hit until 4 years later. Their only #1 in the U.S. was also released with an awesome B-side track, but if I gave the name of either song you’d surely get it. You guys just HAVE to guess who it is now!!!

Ok, you talked me into it: the country is Canada.

    Who’s next?[/code:1]

I’ve filled in some of the previously omitted years above, so that should help, but now I’m giving it away with this playbill:

Oh man….that would be a dead giveaway. Let’s try a more obvious clue (though you really need to look at some of the last ones….I mean, I’m spelling it out for you!):

    CLUE #5:

In 1965, when their first hit (a cover) went #1 in their country, it went to #22 in the U.S., but their first U.S. top 10 didn’t hit until 4 years later. I can’t give any more clues, that last one handed it to you on a silver platter. 😯

Waaaahahahahaha you guys are funny! But wrong, still.

    CLUE #4:
Johnny Sandon and the Searchers, Johnny left in 62′ but the band carried on playing the Cavern under the name The Searchers, they had major success in UK (Motherland) and some good success in US (Disneyland).

    Next..
Sorry, Lee. Wrong again. Here’s the next clue, this should do it:

    CLUE #3:

This new keyboardist and the group’s guitatrist became the bands main composers until lifestyle differences led the guitarist to leave the group during their unfinished 197_ album, and he subsequently formed another band, which eventually evolved into a supergroup (which I can’t name).

Geez, Lee, you’re like a spastic tourettes kid with a bunch of pixie sticks! You came close with one of your guesses, but I’m not saying which one. Ok, here ya go:

    CLUE #2:

Their immediate follow-ups to their first hit were met with major success in their country, but with little success elsewhere. Remember when I told you you know them by their later, more popular name? Let’s see how you do on this one. I might need to give another clue.

Well, my turn, I guess.

I didn’t see the myspace link.
    Good music and excellent playing!!

Play 24 hours a day and enjoy your instruments, before it’s too late.
….Life is so strange sometimes…you are 27, I am 45 and I must quit music , maybe definitely due to the last “friend” I met two weeks ago => “polyarthrisis” ; It took time to write this reply because I am unable to move the fingers of my right hand.
You can trust me I’ll never forget that term for the rest of my life!
Thank you for sharing, and also taking the time to listen & write back; I am sorry to hear about that…I haven’t heard of it before but I assume it’s a form of arthritis? Keep your chin up – there will be something that you will find that will take the place of your love for playing. 🙂

    I’ll give’er a shot:

I think I’ve already given TMI…..you guys are too good & will probably get it right away. I’ll start here though & work my way down.

Thanks for listening, 1b. My buddy Toby who plays drums on that track did that drum intro – totally spontaneous and not how we’ve ever done it before (or after, for that matter), but I love it. My brother is playing bass, and I really like how he plays bass on that song. Our friend Paul Johnson is on lead guitar – a fantastic guitarist. This particular track is a little fast, to be honest, but worthy of being online I think. The vocals aren’t very loud either, but this version was recorded live on a Zoom MSR1266 DRS in a basement of a friend’s house while jamming one night, so fwiw, it’s not all that bad, I guess.

FYI – the 2nd & 4th songs were recorded live last August at a party we throw each year in a field in Scarborough, Maine, with a band that unfortunately no longer exists.

The 3rd song, probably my favorite, was also recorded live around the same time Fire Back was recorded (somewhere between March & June of 2004) and with the same group of folks.

    A-ha! I’ve got one!

Nothing But Flowers by the Talking Heads.

At least the “newer” versions that David Byrne does….can’t remember if the original came right in or not, but I think so!!
