Hi I’m Randall Davidson.First of all you need to realise that on any given song you seldom deal with but about eight notes.Since bass players dont typically chord notes very often you are just dealing with one note at a time.You need to get a book for bass with the 12 major scales and the 12 minor scales in it found at most music shops.Learn those and most importantly start playing with others who are advanced as quickly as possible.I actualy learned how to play bass sitting in church without even owning one.Ive been playing music since 1987 and the best advice I can give you is to find the best teacher you can afford and stick with it.To learn to play by ear turn your bass down low and listen to some of your favorite music and try to match the notes you hear the bass player doing.
        You can often keep your left hand in the same position (fret wise)to play most songs.Scales!!! Scales!!!! All there is is scales.Chord theory is a must also. You have to know the notes of the chord that everyone else is playing over.You absolutely have to have your bass in tune buy yourself a good tuner.And good luck

      DO it the easy way, learn tab, start from there. First off you need to learn basic patterns and progress speed wise, if you start off playing boring stuff you’ll loose interest, so go to tabcrawler.com and look up your favorite bands tabs. Make sure you bass is tuned start with the E string, which is the Fattest, most of the tunings are EADG, if not it’ll state it in tabs etc. Also go pick up guitar world, they have alot of bass tabs/actual notation in them. Have fun and start easy. SCALES!

        I’m learning bass too but from what I’ve done so far I would suggest you practice memorizing the notes and their locations. Listen to the chords in the song and play those notes in some pattern that fits the music… one sublime bass track is G – G – A – G – G – C – D – D – C – D – C on the highest two strings. I don’t know if that helps but I hope so. Good Luck.

      I’m learning too but the strings are E, A, D, G from the fat one to the smallest one. E is called the bottom string even though its the highest one because its a lower note. The notes are A through G, after G is A again and every fret is a half step down except between E and F, and B and C ie. If you start on the fat string without any fingers its E, finger just next to the first fret its F, next one is F sharp or G flat, next one is G, next is G sharp or A flat, then A, then A sharp or B flat, then B, then C etc…
      With the bass you only play one note at a time, not chords like an acustic. Use your finger to hit the strings not your thumb. I think thats about all I know. Good Luck.

        I’m new myself but you should just tell him if he wants to get good enough to just take lessons so he knows what it should sound like. And if he dosn’t want lessons tell him that if he wants to actually get good to take the lessons or he can just keep playing bad. What I’m going to do is get lessons once a week and then practice what I’ve learned till the next lesson. Hope it helps.
