Harlan Smith 6-string PSG
Posted by Ann Vidrine on Tue, 04/19/2011 - 23:25.
Hi, I just bought a used Harlan Smith 6 string PSG. It only has 2 pedals. I mostly intend to play Cajun Music. Do yall know what I should tune the strings to and the pedals? Thanks, Ann
Ann, if you do an internet search there are alternative tunings for 6 string guitars such as E9th, C6th, drop D, drop G tunings and several others I've heard about. If you have a 6 string Pedal Steel you have a few choices here.
I would try the E9th first since most ten string pedal steels use this one the most. But if that doesn't suit you, you may also try a standard guitar tuning. Chances are, your 6 string steel guitar is specially made for someone who wanted to only bend just a couple of strings. One pedal would be used to bend just the B string and the second pedal used to bend the G string and both pedals at the same time would bend both strings. The effects would become a cross between a Lap Steel, Dobro, and a Pedal Steel guitar, and a Telecaster with the benders installed all wrapped into one, played with a slide. I believe you have a one - off unique instrument there, very rare, but would produce a wide variety of sounds. Just sit back, relax, try the different tunings and see what you can do with it.
Most of all, just have fun.

hello all pedal steel lovers,
i am dying to find some parts for my d10 fender pedal steel guitar.
there's only a '0550'inscription on it. so i think it's an early 60's. anybody up there who can help me?
thx,

I'm looking for a pedalboard to fit a Fender pedal steel from the early 1960's. This pedal board must be able to fit the smaller diameter of the adjustable legs. If you can help, send me an e-mail.
Musician's Friend has the Carter Starter (which) has everything you need, including four knee levers) for $700 for the bare bones version. That just might be no tax and free shipping as well. You might find something on Ebay, but cheaper than the Carter Starter, you're also likely to end up with junk. Good luck.

I bought a Carter Starter & had to rebuild it to make it worth playing.Bud done a good job but didn't put a lot of time into the original. Most everyone I've talked to that bought one either did as I & rebuilt it or sold or traded it.Best bet is to find a good cheap used GFI or something else.A bit more $$$ than the Carter but you'll keep it longer.
: Have a 10 pedal fender model 1000 in perfect condition with orginal cases in excellant condition and would like to know value.
It depends - is it an early one with the triangular silver-colored pedals, or a later black pedal (side mounted rod) type? the changers are totally different on the two other than the cables used to pull them. They are the exceptions to the Fender vintage world - the older ones are worth LESS, and Fender pedal steels as a rule aren't very valuable. Personally, I love 'em, but they are completely impractical for modern playing. None of the modern instructional materials are workable with them and you will find zero teachers thhat work with Fender beeginners.
An older one (early 1963 and earlier...and there are a few with triangle pedals and the later changer) is worth around $800-900 in mint condition; a newer one a hundred or two more. You'll see them on eBay all the time with asking prices of $1500 -- with NO bids. Gruhn has had one for months at $795 with no takers.
Probably not what you wanted to hear, but that's the reality.
There is a TINY market for these. Best place - The Steel Guitar Forum.

Is that a keyless steel guitar? If it is keyless I am the original designer and have the only other one in 12 string. I was employed by Ernie Ball as his designer and engineer from 1971 to 1974 You can contact me in person if you like at 985-789-1575 usaf12380291@aol.com I can provide you with photo's of my keyless steel 12 string upon request.

Re: Ernie Ball Pedal Steel
: : Are you sure it's not an Odd Ball? I know a guy that played one. His name was Bones.
: : : In the early 70's I acquired by trade an Ernie Ball 14 string pedal steel. The guy I got it from told me it was a prototype model and 1 of only 2 ever made. Does any body have any information on this guitar?
:
: Is that a keyless steel guitar? If it is keyless I am the original designer and have the only other one in 12 string. I was employed by Ernie Ball as his designer and engineer from 1971 to 1974 You can contact me in person if you like at 985-789-1575 usaf12380291@aol.com I can provide you with photo's of my keyless steel 12 string upon request.
Hello sir!
I have a black 10 string currently and previously owned a silver one. Were there only 50 or so of these actually produced? I'd love more info on this guitar.

Hi butch,
my favorite is a vintage mxr distortion plus. You could try a vintage ts-9 or any of the fulltone stuff. it costs more but it sounds much better than the cheap boss stuff. good luck
