;you need to put a couple of coats of clear over any color you choose, depending on the finish that you like, a flattner is added to the clearcoat make sure you follow the mixing ratios of the clearcoat
I could buy a Strat or Les Paul or just about any guitar in just about any color. I’d like to have my keyboards the same way. Does anyone know anyone that does custom paint jobs on Rolands, Korgs, and Yamahas?

: YES YOU CAN PAINT OVER THE WOOD FINISH,FIRST USE A VERY FINE SANDPAPER LIKE 800 GRIT SO THAT YOU DON’T PUT DEEP SANDSCRATCHES IN THE WOOD THEN JUST GO TO TOWN. TO PROTECT YOUR FINISH YOU SHOULD PUT A CLEARCOAT ON IT

My close friend is in love with Gary Allen’s green guitar. For his birthday I want to recreate it and give it to him. I would consider myself an established artist, so paint and I are pretty good friends. I was just wondering if any of you had a few good ideas on how to go about this. It looks like green finished wood that was just made to look antiqued/used a lot. I am not a guitar person and have no idea what that metal piece is called, but that looks like the toughest part to me. I’d greatly appreciate ANY help/ideas that anyone is willing to offer!

JUST SAND THE GUITAR A LITTE WITH A FINE SANDPAPER LIKE 600 GRIT, USE SPRAY PAINT FOR THE GREEN,GOT TO ANY CRAFT STORE LIKE MICHELS THEY’LL SHOW YOU TRICKS THAT CRAFT PEOPLE USE TO MAKE WOOD LOOK OLD
They make what’s called a transparent stain. I’m not sure how you would go about primers or lacquers. I’m no expert, and this is just an idea, so I’m not sure I’d try it if I were you. First you would strip the guitar completely. Remove everything until you’re just down to the body. Sand with coarse sandpaper, then medium, then fine. When you think your ready to paint, try scorching the body and sanding it down with fine sandpaper. Then you could put the stain on and maybe wipe some off over the burnspots. Just an idea.

how do i repaint my guitar because i dont like the colour it is can someone please help me
Where do I buy the custom paint and supplies that I need to repaint my guitar? I’m going to repaint my guitar in the military 82nd Airborne for a tribute to my old unit and their outstanding heritage. Please help me find the place to buy all the materials that I need for this project. Thank you in advance.
Hey, I am in the same boat as you guys, I am not exactly sure how you repaint your guitar but here is what I know.
Paint: I believe you use an airbrush and the type of paint that airbrushes use.
1. Take off your strings.
2. Wipe down your guitar with a damp cloth, especially where you are gonna apply paint.
3. Completely cover any part you dont want paint to touch (i.e. the fretboard)
NOTE: Find a way to cover your pickups!!!! Have a pro paint your pickups
4. paint one side at a time and let try.
Instead of trusting myself though, I am takin mine to a guitar shop and having them do it…
Hope I helped!
where and what kind of paint do i need for repainting my electic guitar? please somebody help me
If you need to ask that question, it’s probably a good indication that you ought not try it.
(: If you need to ask that question, it’s probably a good indication that you ought not try it.)
WOW…That’s a VERY rude reply. With a REPLY LIKE THAT why even bother responding! I would suggest purchasing a book on this so it will give you step to step instructions. (Kryon Spray Paint is easy)

This popular thread has been given its own page : Re: how do i repaint my guitar
First off, strip your guitar. This means removing the strings and neck, pickguards, tremelo, backplates, electronics, pickups, everything. Be warned though: most electronics will require snipping the wires, so you will need someone to solder them back later. Then sand down the lacquer, paint, primers, and sealers all the way down to the wood. This will be tough, but you should have nothing but wood left when you are done. Start with coarse sandpaper, then medium, then fine. Do not sand the neck slot. This may cause your guitar’s playability to suffer. If you have dents, fill them in with wood putty and a putty knife. Then apply a sanding sealer and use Testors model paint with an inexpensive airbrush. You should apply 2-3 coats of paint, and one coat of polyurethane. Polyurethane can be bought at Wal-Mart or any hardware or painting store. Airbrushes and paint can be bought at http://www.testors.com. Be sure to take your time and don’t neglect the polyurethane. Doing so may result in graphics from t-shirts leaving a colored residue than is a pain in the arse to remove on your freshly painted guitar. You may want to buy new electronics for your guitar at this point. Most electronics that are put in by the manufacturer are terrible and could use replacing. Good luck!

I have a squire strat that i want to dress up to look like a buddy guy strat. What steps do i need to take to achieve this?
Hi, Im painting my guitar black and green and I was wondering if the pick gard would look good or crappy if I painted it green or black with a design on it. Thank You
Ive got a squire strat and i want to make it into an Eddie Van Halen 5150 guitar the black one with yellow stripes thanks alot Joe.
I want to make a black and yellow EVH too. Go to paintyourownguitar.com/gw1.html and it will show you all the best equipment to use. there is also an e-book there that you can buy. its worth it trust me. Guitar world also has a guy that writes a colum once in a while on how to refinish your guitar. each month he gives a different step.
I’ve already got one guitar paint job under my belt, but I was told that you must use a high gloss lacquer finish for it to look right. The problem with this is I can only find paint such as this in black, white, and clear. What other types of paint can I use, and is the clear coat process the same after the initial color is on?
where would be best place to send my les paul to get re painted pro so its as good finish as it is now and how much? and could i get a two tone paint finish like some boy racers have got their cars?

there are many websites that offer that service, as well as many freelance artists such as myself. Two tone is simple, and price all depends. I am currently in the process of starting a business that does custom guitars, toilet seats, bicycles, as well as many other things including crafts as well, feel free to email me
I just bought a house built in 1970. I cannot seem to match any of the toilet seats colors so, I would like to paint them myself. What can of process does this take, step-by-step please, and will it be washable/scrubbable?

This is just a broad idea of how its done. The number of coats and such vary..

The answer is yes to washable/scrubbable depending on yoru finish. You should clean the toilet seat, if it has a previous finish sand it off with a fine sandpaper till all gloss is removed, then you should tack cloth it and clean..then spray it a couple coats. Then you can finish with a clear coat of your choice depending on whether you want gloss or matte its all yoru preference. The clear coat is for protection. Multiple coats of clear coat are a good idea. You should also sand before each coat of paint to ensure even-ness. You should also sand the last coat with a very fine grit as well before the clear coat for better adhesion. You should also sand a little between clear coats as well. There are many different techniques and steps people use. this is the way I do it.
after filling in the wood with filler, would I put the sanding sealer first or would I stain the body first? If I could get some input I would relly apreciate it. I have a swamp ash body.
stain the wood first, then use your sealer…make sure you rub the stain as evenly as possible, with a cotton rag or something similar…
: stain the wood first, then use your sealer…make sure you rub the stain as evenly as possible, with a cotton rag or something similar…
..sanding sealer comes before the finish, then you seal with a regular sealer. Sanding sealer seals after sanding and fills unevenness, so the surface is more even..
I own an Epi SG Special, and i want to get that "faded", lacquerless look that the Gibson Faded SG Specials have. Any way to do this while keeping the color intact?
: I own an Epi SG Special, and i want to get that "faded", lacquerless look that the Gibson Faded SG Specials have. Any way to do this while keeping the color intact?
I’m not sure what you mean by faded like the SG special as I don’t think i have seen it, but if you have an airbrush(double action) and start painting with the airbrush with the trigger allthe way back and slowly bring it forward you can do a fade effect. Or if you hold the airbrush closer to the surface and progressively pull the airbrush farther away, you will also get somewhat of a fade effect…hope that helps a little 🙂
does anyone know where i can get my guitar customised with the picture of JAck from a nightmare before xmas for a cheap price?? thanx
why dont you just do it yourself…….btw that would be kick ass
i would have a jack head shaped body and paint it and have the neck the paint job of his pinstriped suit
There are plenty of places on the web that do it. Basically any auto/motorcycle customization/paint shop will do it but it’ll cost. That particular idea could easily be done by someone with lesser experience and will save you some big bucks. If you’re from the MA area, let me know – I could even do it myself. Good Luck and Great Idea!
does any1 know how 2 paint an electric guitar, i wanna put a camo pattern on it, what would be best on a low budget???
Thanks
Depending on your budget and artistic ability, a cammo pattern shouldn’t be too challenging. Use the darkest color of your cammo as your base or primer coat (ie: black, dark green, dark blue). Air brush will yield much smoother final results but spray cans can do for the rest. First you wanna mask off the dark pattern and spray the next color (leaving the dark pattern masked underneath). Allow that to dry (24 hours), apply a dull coat to protect that paint layer, light sand (1000 grit), and mask off that pattern (same as before with dark color). Go ahead with next color – repeat this process until you’re done. Peel off all your masking (carefully), and begin clearing (I can’t stress how much patience is a virtue here). Start with thin coats and apply in layers – after you have a good build up – let that dry for 2-3 days, sand and repeat. Once you feel you have a nice thick clear coat, sand with 1500, then 2000, buff, and wax. Detailed enough? I wish I could have used pics. Good luck.

i used to work at a water park doing airbrush tattoos. it was fun and i bought an air compressor and some paint and stencils. it coted me about 300. but i think it was worth it now that im painting guitars with it. if you cant afford it, then get a high quality spray paint. read the can if it says 12 to 14 inches stay that far away from your guitar body. and several liiiggghht coats. youll get a perfect finish with it. if you do it right.
I would like a resin toilet seat in a marble effect of black gold and white is this possible and if so how much would it cost
to do that you get ur paints and plastic wrap. paint it and put ur plastic wrap crinkled on it and itll look like marble. ask an auto painter for more detail on that.

Ok, Heres the deal. I ve been in a band for a year or so and we got the music part down were just trying to upgrade the style an i like a billion other people want a pink guitar where can i buy one?!? Or where can i have mine panted and how much?if ya could help me i’d love ya forever!!!
style has nothing to do with music. if you are good people will like you, but if you are going to have your guitar painted i suggest something more original than pink like having some cool custom designs put on the body
i don’t know how to do it, but jeef is right, a little more originality could be used. maybe you could go with the pink as a background color, and have your band logo or something ontop.but thats my opinion, do what you want
in case anyone still cares heres a website that may help

I have sucessfully "sanded" all the black laquer off my guitar and dawn to the wood. How do I integrate a black and white checker board finish onto the guitar? Any ideas are much appreciated. Thanks. . .

Hi, I want to paint my strat with a chameleon paint scheme! I’m alright with the painting, I’ve done that before, my problem is that I have never dismantled a guitar nor built one before and unfortunately that is a rather important step in setting up to paint a guitar. I work in a music store and thought one day that I would take home a piece of crap classical guitar that has a crack in the neck. I dont know why, I thought maybe it would be cool to paint it and use as more of a decoration in my home studio. I want to do an italian landscape type of paiting, however dont want to airbrush, I want it to look more like an old oil painting… I dont care what the guitar sounds like, cause the guitar sucks any ways..
Does anyone have any ideas on what materials I should use? Acrylics? ? ? ?
And what kind of finish I should use..
And if you have any cool ideas on the artwork it would be kinda cool to hear..and get some input…
Thanks all

I’ve actually had success using acrylics on both electrics and archtops. my problem was that I needed to beware of buildup, but after you lacquer it, the acrylic should be fine.

Hello. I’m interested in painting my guitar myself. I don’t have the money to get it done professionally so I’d like some advice as to how to go about this. It is a wooden, acoustic guitar so what kind of paint should I use? Could I get this at a craft store or paint store? Are there any special techniques for doing it? Anything that I shouldn’t do? Please e-mail me back and let me know.
Thank you.
now depending on the the paint and or stain itll cost you around 40 to 60 bucks maybe. and alot of patience. i am painting a guitar now for the first time and i messed up once but now i have the hang of it. its an ibanez rg 320 first you have to strip it down the bare wood. i would get a power sander and coarse paper 80 grit. once uve got all the paint or stain off, you can change the shape a little. i rounded off the edges to give it a js look. then you want to use a moderate leveling grit. 120 grit. to get any scuffs off. thne and this is perhaps most important to a perfect finish you need to use fine sandpaper 220-320 grit. to get a really smooth soft look. then use a tack cloth to wipe off all the dust from the body. then you get a primer. im doing mine a solid color so i used white spray wood primer. you get a few layers on. several light coats are better than heavy ones. let it dry another coat of primer. and sand it a little bit. primer helps the texture and bond the final paint to the body so it wont chip. then you put the final finish on it i have high reflective gold. you just put light coats on it waiting and repeating until its covered. when its completely dry do the other sides and sides. im putting copper and black flames on it i cut with mylar as stencils. if your just staining it then u just use the same steps but wiht a stain of different colors. like a light stain for the top of an acoustic and a darker for the sides generally. it varies though between stains so go to home depot or lowes or a paint store and read the cans of the colors you like and ask the store guy for advice. you have to be VERY patient though, if you screw it up its done and thne you shit out of luck. so take your time, it should take about three days to do a guitar nicely.
