Hello everyone,
Hope everyone is well with this crazy COVID -19 Virus going around.
I have a Westbrook Les Paul that I have had for at least 35 years or so. It is in Mint Condition and has two Kick -Ass Humbuckers on it. This guitar some times sounds better than my 1969 Les Paul Custom Goldtop ! Really, It blows me and my Band mates away.
They have often said.. How could this be?
Anyway I have no intention of selling it but I am curious if it has any value.
Where can I find out.
I bought it at at yard sale in Thousand Oaks California for about $50. back in the mid 80’s.
If ya know where I can find out or if you know, Please let me know 😉
Stay Safe out there!
Thanks
Hi there, well I was curious about this guitar I got at a house yard sale and its a WestBrook, it looks exactly like a Gibson Dove/hummingbird, with the flame maple everywhere and a red sunburst finish. its got a nice paper-y spruce top and sounds so mellow and smooth…its beat up a tad but still is striking.
the model is G-3010 #029 any info? is it worth anything besides sentimental value?? I know instruments and the build is excellent but could not find any info on it.
Any one who knows anything about it write me!
thanks
Cg
I recently came across a Westbrook dobro. No idea of the year, just know it is pretty old. Anyone have any thoughts on the value of this old beauty or does anyone out there even have one?

: : : I have come into possession of a Westbrook guitar, modle# FW745. there are two problems but i do not think the integrity of the guitars sound or sondness are affected yet. my question — should i get repaired? the problems: the skin on the back has a blister. the other is the thing below the big round hole that the strings are anchored into — it’s split/cracked but not coming apart, it’s very stable. so what do you think? what can you tell me about this guitar?

Wow, I was on another guitar forum and we were discussing our first guitars. Frankly, I became curious about it b/c you never know. I goolged the name “Westbrook Guitar” and this site came up.
Mine was a Westbrook Classical (model unknown-guaranteed not to crack) that we purchased at Sherman Clay in San Francisco for $32 in 1967 (I was 12 at the time). I know nothing about it and it is in storage so I cannot give you anything specific yet.
All I can say is (and I have now played guitar on/off for 38 years) it still plays well but is not a quality guitar; the labels have long since fallen off. The action is very high as I recall, okay at the nut but quiet prominent at the 12 fret. Intonation was worthless beyond the 12th, but then I was only playing open chords at the nut. I know this post is old but if it finds you and you have some info let me know. I will get the Westbrook out of storage soon (to try and find out the model #) and I will do what I can to find out anything. There was a country guitar player named John Westbrook in the 60’s and there may be some relationship. However, in reality, I believe the guitar was a generic one that was sold as an entry-level guitar for beginners. I doubt it has much value, even today beyond sedimental. My parents just bought the cheapest one they could find.

What a trip. I’m sitting here with a Westbrook guitar in my lap, restringing it for probably only the 10th time in its life, a gift from my father in 1964-5 when I was only 12 years old. It sounds like we’re from similar backgrounds. My father bought it at Sherman-Clay in San Jose. God! How I wish I’d bought the Stratocaster they had there when I saw it in ’66. Anyway, a player all my 44 years since, sometimes seriously, sometimes just sublime. A great gift from a humble and hard-working man.
We have a Westbrook Model 12, that my wife got as a gift from her Dad about 40 yrs ago. Still in great shape, few smudges is all. Single pick up. What do you think its worth?

Aug 19th 2005 I have a Westbrook in my shop ,just purchased it for $70.00 u.s. From my experience any guitar that lasts 30 years that doesn’t need a neck reset or an intonation change probably says"Taylor" on the headstock. This is a decent spruce top, acoustic, no major cracks other than a few cowboy chord wear spots. I will have it cleaned up and playing well in the next two months,If you have a guitar that you are in love with ,even if it didnt cost a fortune they can usually be broght back to life, just check my site @www.diamondguitar.com and have a look at the Stellas good luck -practice!

I have a had a Westbrook Guitar, Model # W-140, made in Japan, for 30 years now. I purchased it at a Pawn Shop for I think $65. I love her tone, though I have always thought the action to be a bit of a challenge, also. Mine is a large size, narrow neck, folk guitar. I have had the neck ajusted & someone had chaged the tuners. I am looking on the Web because I am just starting to play again & thought, I have never seen another Westbrook & wondered if they are still around. t

Can anyone give me info on a toyota guitar?
i have one with the same markings. i got it for 80 bucks in a pawnshop. the box sounds great, but it needs a neck reset like crazy… the intonation is off by a mile, and the bridge is falling apart. but if i had the money, i’d definitely fix it up. it might have great potential.

i have a toyota acoustic model no. 610T serial #760109 distributed by hershman musical instruments, new york ny.. i believe it is from the 1970’s and it’s a nice sounding small bodies acoustic especially for what i paid for it, although i am sure other toyota guitars are somewhat hit and miss as are most cheaper guitars.

Hi… we have an exact same guitar. My dad purchased it from some guy in the Boston area in the mid 70’s. We’ve never encountered anyone else with such a guitar. Have you found any information on it other then the info provided in the body?

I bought my guitar at millers appliance in Canandaigua ny in the early 70’s. It is a model 616 I believe? Dreadnought style. It plays and sounds very sweet. Haven’t heard a guitar sounding this nice, for ten times the price! Till death do us part!

I have a hollow body electric Toyota that I purchased from Murphy’s Music in Huntington, NY (Long Island) back in 1994 for $60 because one of the pickups was blown. It was an Orange-Sunburst with a floating bridge and wrap around tremlo system. It has 2 double humbuckers, which I have switched to ceramics now.
Acording to the info I’ve found, it was made in 1972 (which is why I bought it – same year I was born). I don’t have any model numbers to go by though, and I’ve now since refurbished the entire guitar – paint as well. Now it has custom paint & graphics, and all new electronics. But the body & neck have held up beautifully.
I play this guitar daily, and love the fact that it’s so lightweight (compared to my Les Paul, anything is). It has a real beefy sound when I add distortion to it, and great sustain when running clean with some chorus. I really dig this guitar.

I have checked the web occasionally for the past 10 years about Toyota Guitars and i cam across this thread. I have a thin-body acoustic electric Toyota, no discernable model number, F-hole (shape of ES 335 with points at top of body), red/yellow sunburst. It has the zero fret. I bought it used in the mid-1970s for $20. I put 2 DiMarzio pickups in it back in the 70s. I’ve had it set up several times over the years at a good private guitar shop in the Trenton NJ area. It has always played well – intonation gets set up at the shop and stays in tune as long as I don’t move the bridge. I always considered the guitar to be a great value – it is very nice looking. Other people who have played it have enjoyed it and compare it to the Ibanez and Yamaha guitars of its day. I have a set of 1960s and 1970s ‘Guitar Player’ magazines and I recall seeing a buisiness-card size ad for toyota guitars in one of the issues. Other than that, i’ve bnever learned anything else about the company. Someone once told me that when the auto company challenged the use of the name, they folded. : : : : : Can anyone give me info on a toyota guitar?

So i thought…."Damn, for the first time in my life, ‘Westbrook’ looks interesting to me" So i looked it up on the net…and wow…here i am. Thats my story… OK bye

My mother played and sang in Fargo North Dakota with Dixie Lee in the early 40’s. I have my mothers guitar a westbrook in mint condition. Would it be worth any money, if so how much. It has a sticker inside that reads NO N G – 12…..The N G – 12 is a stamp. If anyone knows the value let me know. Thanks Linda Hallett [email protected]

I have a Westbrook guitar model #352 made in Japan. It still has the "steel reinforced neck" label. I got it in 1973 for $30. The back is coming loose from the sides. I was given an estimate of $125 to fix it. Anyone out there know if it’s worth fixing? Thanks.

I know that if it were my guitar I would definately fix it, mostly because it would be preserving something from the past and would make a great family heirloom. If your not willing to fix it, you can usually buy a new acoustic for about the same price it would cost to fix the old one, and the old one can always be made in to a really nifty clock.
Hi,
Yes I do have too much free time on my hands and A.D.D ( attention, dfficit, disorder but, thats a whole different subject). But lets talk about looking at judjing the value of your Westbrook Guitar.I currantly
have no thurther informtion about who, where, and when your Westbrooks where made ( I’m still looking for that information myself). What I am going too post are just some genral information about just about any
guitar. 1) The scarcity of the comoity ( think about a minral like gold
basic economics 2) The condition of your guitar ( dose it have all the orginal parts, the finish is in good shape, dose it have the original
case and sales tags 3) Remeber any changes to your guitar (in the case
we still generlizing this also applies to your Westbrook Guitar) will lower the value of your guitar.4) As a rule of thumb just like a classic car the more orginal parts the more (hopefully) valuable
but, rember just like a car parts wair out and need replacind and or repair through out its lifetime and not unusual. Hopefully soon I’ll
recive more valuable information than what I currantly posted.
Have fun with your Westbrook Guitar

I found an interesting site concerning some information surrounding Westbrook / Stella guitars http://www.fret-dancer.com/page15.html. Now if any one could dig up some information concerning Ivar Johnson guitars that would be something. I ran across one that looked like a really bad Hofner rip off painted this nasty looking orange. I know at one time that Ivar Johnson had made bicycles, motorcycles, and rifles. I talked to the store owner who is usualy up on unsusual guitars but he didn’t know very much about it or Ivar Johnson for that matter.

Anyone out there understand what the Model # stands for? I think the 69 stands for year. Bought it for $30. Did I get a good deal. I cant find any info what so ever…………thanks all……keep on creating………..
Hi,
It is me again to hopefully answer a question about a Westbrook Guitar that Christan had abou playing an old Westbrook. With out seeing your guitar it would be impossable to tell if it would be playable. It would be advisable to take your guitar to either to a muisic store or a luther
(guitar builder) who would be willing to do a futher examination of your guitar. Because these guitars may have either a seal reiforces neck ( think of an I-beam in construction in bridges,Sears Silvertone,
Reagal,Danelectro,Harmony had at given times used these building techniques because of cost cutting, rember these guitar where entry leavel guitars) or may not have one at all (this information should be
used as a comperitive to other guitars made at this price point but not as an absolote untill further information is made avalable)which should
not be ruled out. My best suggestion for your Westbrook Guitar is to use a low tention silk and steel string (Ernie Ball, C.F Martin ect.)
this would reduce stress on the neck and body of the guitar (the bracing, and plywood may not be able to take the stress over time and it is best to error on the side of caution). The silk and steel strings are not verry loud but, has a nice tone about them somewhere between a classical anf light folk guitar and is good for blues and jazz tones. A quibb about the silk and steel, they wair out pretty fast.Oh well.
Any further adjustments with your guitar should be done by a compitant
luthier. No vaule of these Westbrooks has been found as of yet. If you like it then that should be the value you place on these guitars. Do not excpect to gain the price of these guitars as classic C.F Martin or that of a vintage Gibson.
Once again have fun with your Westbrook

Hi,
I too am looking for information about Westbrook Guitars.
My best guest that the Westbrook guitars where made form the 1950’s-1960’s as an entry leavel departmentstore guitar made out of minly
plywood. What I had not confirmed was who made these guitars( Harmony? Silverton? ect.) nor the country of origain. Most likely these where an American made guitar (unconfimed) but by looking at the building techniquies and parts (tail peices, tuning machines, bridgies, ect)looks
like a good guest.Guitars form other counties ( Japan,Italy,Tiwan) used
a diffrent finish and building techniques.
My search had lead me to contact Real Guitars in San Francisco and Vinage Guitar Magazine ( http://www.vintageguitar.com ) and am currantly waiting for a resonce from both. When I find any information about Westbrook Guitars I’ll send you what I had found out (post, links, ect).

( about $50.00 Austrailan ). I hope that these guitars has an intersting story like Stella( Oscar Shimitt Co.)or Lyon & Healy (Washburn 1883-1928 not to be confused with currant Washburns made past
1970 which was owned by Beckman according to Tony Bacon’s Amerocan Guitar From 1833 to the Present Day Friedman/Faifax Publishers 2001).
Goodluck, goodhunting,and have some fun

: I have a westbrook guitar and i’m wondering the same about everyone else. How much it might be worth? So if anyone even knows anything just let me know
I think they’re worth about $40 max. now.
i bought one in the mid 90’s. bought it in a pawn shop for about $60. it has 4 pickups that have almost no output and a bunch of switches a knobs. the neck is really thick. i know nothing else about them.
Now, here’s where it gets tricky. There are several versions of Westbrook guitars. The domesticaly made ones were made in the same factory that did a lot of the Oscar and Schmidt family of guitars, Stella, Washburn and that family. Apparantly some time during the fifties Oscar and Schmid started farming both the Stella and Westbrook guitars out to the far East, primarily Japan. Now, they aren’t bad guitars, they are actually a lot of fun if you string them with silk and steel strings and if you play slide on them (they have a pretty "rustic" sound). If you want a hint on what they sound like check out some of the Leadbelly or Son House recordings. Son House used a lot of "open tunings" and got a pretty ratty tone out of his guitar, heck, it’s plywood so it’s not going sound really sweet like a nice Martin small body O, OO, or OM from the same era but they do have their own charm.
Now, some one has posted a blurb about a Korean made version, I don’t know anything about them. I have a feeling that some one bought the name like some of the really funky "Ivar Johnson" guitars that were produced.

Value – Not much – The real deal is if you have a brand that is pretty much unheard of you essentially have nothing and you are stuck with it.
I see one on CL today (the jazz man) for $55.
Try a Franciscan or Kremona (or Cremona), as I have two…they are very reasonable and terrific!
Maybe you can work out a deal with jazzman if you
are in the Sac area. His # 916 928-1397

I have a 6 string (steel) acoustic labeled G-800 made in Japan. Has a nice neck and solid spruce top, not plywood. Decent frets and what looks like light Rose Wood finger board.
Needs some work, so I’m putting bone nut and saddle on it. Hope to have it running by Easter so my grand-daughter can play it when she comes to visit 🙂
No idea what its worth, that is how i wound up here.
However, i must tell of my little beater guitar. its a westbrook 6 string acoustic. model m80 or h80 i can hardly read the label inside. I bought it from some neighbor who needed beer money for like $10 in 1989. It has since become one of my favorites. i have plenty of other guitars, but this one plays good.. is like a 3/4 size, i feel good about throwing it in the car and going to a picnic not worried about dings or anything. it sounds pretty good, plays good. all three of my sons grew up playing on this guitar. its seen a lot of life and i like it.
i too hoped to find out that it was some secret Stradivarius, i’m kinda glad it isnt, i still have my beater guitar to bang on out on my front porch.
THESE SITES ARE SO LAME……A GUITAR IS WORTH WHAT YOU CAN GET FOR IT! Now my westbrook is from the early 1950’s and was made in AMERICA and it has REAL IVORY with nickle…..I know it’s worth more than $55! The company was started here in San Francisco which is why most of the ones you see for sale are from SF and, until the 1960’s these were made by real craftsmen…….of course they’re made of plywood. I think every old acoustic is! Guitar people are so stupid, they really piss me off. I would guess I could pull $200+ out of mine but who knows…on ebay, I have seen them sell for $75-$100 and right now there’s one that nobody wants on there for $20. The answer is, as always, it is worth what you can sell it for and that includes desperation. Sometimes a $10,000 guitar is worth $5 to a crackhead who stole 20 of them and just needs a hit. Sometimes a $10 guitar is worth $500 to a sucker that can’t tell it has been made to look as if it were a $500 guitar buy a more sophisticated meth head!
I received the Westbrook slotted headstock guitar for graduating from the eighth grade. It came new from a Pawn shop in the cardboard box, equipped with steel strings. Not a flat top country or folk design but I don’t think anyone knew that. A small book of chords and country traditional songs included. It was great to learn on, was probably Japanese in 1968 but may have been one of the Stella models. Action not great but playable I practiced constantly and after 4 years the top peeled away from the body. My folks probably paid $12.95 for it and that was alot at the time. Value now in 2016 if still intact? You be the judge…
I have a wanna be les paul with a beautiful inlay fret board by ivar does anyone have any history on this?
My dad has a Westbrook as well (he doesn’t know when he got it…), and it currently only has 3 strings due to overuse. When I was 10, I got an elastic string from a price tag and fashioned another string. We’re just tuning it like a ukelele. Peace and love and hope!
I have two old classical Westbrook guitars. The better of the two has the model number of NG12N. Does anyone know anything about these guitars and this particular model? Please let me know.
Fritz
hello my name is Christyn.A few days ago I was cleaning out our basement and found a guitar that my great aunt sent me,she said she just never uses it anymore. It has a westbrook symbol on the top of the guitar. SO my qeustion is … I didn’t know if its an antique and I shouldn’t use it or if there are tons of westbrook guitars out there and it wouldn’t hurt to play it?

smallman guitars are built by greg smallman and his sons damon and kym in australia. he has developed a revolutionary new design for classical guitars in which the back and sides are made very stiff so that the top vibrates more. John Williams is probably the most famous player of smallman guitars, which he has been playing since the early 80’s. these guitars are extremely rare and generally cost in excess of $20000. hope that answers your questions.
