I don't think you are going to learn how to play bass for free but,you could probaly learn the chord if you play it.

I'm new myself but you should just tell him if he wants to get good enough to just take lessons so he knows what it should sound like. And if he dosn't want lessons tell him that if he wants to actually get good to take the lessons or he can just keep playing bad. What I'm going to do is get lessons once a week and then practice what I've learned till the next lesson. Hope it helps.
